one for my Granddaughter and her husband.
meflick and 7 others reacted to heppnerguy for a topic
My Granddaughter and her husband are in the process of moving into their brand new home so I thought they might like to have a name plaque by their front door to greet visitors. It is also only about a week away from their 20 anniversary so I added their marriage year to it also. I copied the idea for it from something I saw on line. I used a #3 Pegas MGT blade and cut it into what I believe to be Mahogany 3/4 inch base. All of the like colored wood I received from my son and I am not sure of the species of it. I mailed it out this morning so I will not get a response for a few days. Dick heppnerguy8 points -

Robin Segmentation - completed
rjweb and 5 others reacted to barb.j.enders for a topic
Sighting of the first robin of the season. Not sure of the wood. Cut with a #1 blade. Acrylic paints. Frame is a gel stain - don't remember the colour. Complete finish with Walrus Oil. Definitely some errors, but only I know about them. You can see the progress in the Works in Progess section. @heppnerguy- this was done over a couple of weeks, just so ya know!6 points -

This should be the last of my walnut lumber. Hopefully I will be able to make room to get it all inside. Last two photos is what I had from last falls haul. I did use a small stack that I couldn’t get up above last year. Todays load has been cut for a year so it should be dry enough to use. I should be set on walnut lumber for a year or so I think. Now if he would just get some rejected cherry. The lumber graders will reject it if it’s not a certain length or if it has a split or knot in it within the certain length.6 points

Special order from my wife
lawson56 and 3 others reacted to scrollerpete for a topic
Not scroll saw related, my wife likes to collect the saucer and tea cup and after coming back from Florida, her friends brought some over as gifts. She said I need another display. As the saying say”happy wife is happy life”. I used red oak and minwax stain. She likes it so browny points for me. The first picture is the one that she purchased years ago, the next two are the one that I made.4 points -
Here is my version of a sign with the saying Judy (chellcass) found and posted in New Pattern Announcements. When my Lady saw it she said please make me a sign with that saying on it for my Birthday (which isn’t until August). I think she wants to hang it over her desk at work…not sure the boss will be happy with it! Well impatient me, I couldn’t wait. So, I used Scroll-Calligraphy Font and developed a pattern for this sign cut with Pegas #2/0 Spiral blades in an 5/32x8x10 Solid Core Birch Ply panel affixed to a 1/4” Solid Core Walnut Ply backer that was stained to darken with Minwax Dark Walnut. The frame is a 1/2” wide Pine shadow box type primed and Painted a rattle can spray satin Dark Brown. Comments and critiques always welcome.4 points

Hiking stick holder
heppnerguy and one other reacted to Scrappile for a topic
Very nice. I need to build on for my walking stick... I have been using it since the 1970's and carving on it. Not good carving, around the campfire with a #10 Buck knife carving. The one thing the grandkid fight over who is going to get grandpa's walking stick when he croaks. Croaks is the term they use,,, I think it is one of my pronouns now.2 points -
I saved that pattern. Loved it the instant I saw it. Excellent job!!2 points

New again from Wisconsin
MarieC reacted to Scruffydog for a topic
Hi, I'm back. I honestly have no idea what happened since I joined in 2017, came back again in 2019, went thru Covid, layoff, re-employment, and now into semi-retirement. Anyway, my shop is now reorganized and my Delta scroll saw repositioned by the basement egress window and I am hoping to do more scrolling. Did a Steve Good pattern yesterday and it was a lot of fun. See attached. Gotta work on my finishing skills. One thing I learned: I'm shooting for smooth lines rather than getting hung up on following the lines exactly. Like everyone says, once the pattern is off no one knows where the line was anyway, and people who look at it don't know that either. Hopefully I'll get better with practice and keep my mind sharp. Thanks for still being here.1 point -

I have the Klingspor Abrasives Gold Sand Mop 1"x 4" 220 Grit Flutter Sheet Starter Kit. I'm not sure what grit it is. I have been using it for a long time. I also have a Mac Mop, which I have not been using long enough to have an opinion.1 point

My BIL passed away 2 years ago at 68 years old on this past 25th. My sister, her husband asked me last month if I would make a box to put some of his ashes in for their son. I have never really made a "nice" box so I told her that I would come up with something. He, his son, myself,, the whole family have always been "Truck Guys". So I showed her a picture of a truck I made last year and asked her if I was able to make another one and insert some ashes in it, if it would be alright. She said yes. The body is made from Hickory and the fenders are Walnut. Several coats of Lacquer for the finish. I drilled a 1/4" hole in the bottom for the ashes and sent her a picture. She asked me where I was going to put my stamp. I had forgotten that she wanted me to stamp it.. with the hole in the center of the bottom of the truck, I didn't have room anywhere to put my stamp. So I plugged the hole for the ashes and move it towards the front of the truck. This gave me room for my stamp. I drilled the hole about 3/4" deep and filled halfway with ashes. I used my plug cutter on the remaining piece of Hickory to make a plug. I had my wife make a red heart on her Cricut to put around the plug. I think it turned out pretty nice. Now I have to make a "tire knocker" for their 19 year old grandson with some of his ashes in it for him to place in his Jeep.. in case he ever gets into a tussle,, he will have his Grandpa there to help. Hi Doug: Looks good, easy to read You may want to narrow the base a bit I would go with a natural stain. just my 2 cents worth Fab41 point

I have several different types but for this project I think I used this one. https://www.woodworkingshop.com/product/PARMM072/ I used mainly a 120 grit. I also have it in a 80 and 220 grit.1 point

For me and the way I cut; criteria for the blade falls into the following categories: 1. Width of the kerf a. For the small box with a sliding dovetail I want a kerf that allows for the dovetail to move freely yet not be so large that the dovetail joint comes apart. I've been using FD Polar #1 blades in 1 1/2 inch oak (I've cut the box from purple heart) b. For the small Christmas ornaments I've been cutting ( the dragonfly is 1 3/4" wingtip to wingtip ) I am using FD Polar #2/0. 1/8" basswood, stacked 4 high (1/2") I limit the stack to 1/2" because of the drill bits, not the blade. I use the #2/0 because that the kerf that looks best on the small ornaments. For the larger ornaments I'll change to #1. 2. How tight a corner a. For fretwork I use FD Polar #1 for tight curves and sharp corners. For long straight cuts (generally the outside) I'll switch to a FD Polar #3. Th thickness of most of the fretwork is between 3/4 to just over 1" ( sometimes stacked sometimes not ) b. For compound cutting I use FD Polar blades generally #1 or #3 depending on what the pattern is. On the reindeer I'll use a #1 so I can cut the pattern in a single pass ( no breaks around the outside ) 3. Stiffness of the blades I use FD Polar because, for me, they are the stiffest blades I've used. They resist bending inside the cut, so when cutting thick or stacked pieces the top, middle and bottom pieces are the same. 4. Other considerations, since I like fretwork I prefer stamped blades with a burr on one side. In my opinion this allows more flexibility in cutting because the burr helps to cut a tighter radius when the burr is in the direction of the turn.1 point

Blades .....
Greatgrandpawrichard reacted to Jim McDonald for a topic
Remembering that different manufacturers have slightly different numbering for their blades in both teeth and thickness, we will dive into this. After a few thousand inches of following the lines, one develops a feel for their prowess cutting. Some like blades super tight (guilty) while others will be just a notch lighter. Some like the tiniest blades (2/0) out there for everything under a certain thickness. For me, anything under 1/8", I gravitate to a #1 blade. Usually pick #3 up to about 1/2" or so, but I just finished a 3/4" cherry piece with some Pegas #3MGT. I am comfortable with that blade and that is my preferred sawdust generator. But, I still switch from time to time not only size but brands, depending on what I THINK might work better. So, I really haven't given you an answer other than to develop your own knowledge base from experimentation. There is no database of blade/material/feed vs blade. Everyone has a general idea what they grab first, but put 10 of us around a table and you will get 15 opinions. Just make some dust and memories.1 point -

It really is interesting to see the crosses done is different colors as it is often my inter thoughts as to what color I wish to use on a project and I often ask my wife for her opinion. Sometimes I am glad I did ask but often we end up with the same choices. I sure enjoyed you posts today Dick heppnerguy1 point -

What unique idea. One that has a lot of meaning attached that makes it so extra special to the entire family. A very nice project that is very thoughtful and it instantly becomes probably the most important wood truck anyone has ever made. Dick heppnerguy1 point -
