Robin Segmentation - completed
rjweb and 9 others reacted to barb.j.enders for a topic
Sighting of the first robin of the season. Not sure of the wood. Cut with a #1 blade. Acrylic paints. Frame is a gel stain - don't remember the colour. Complete finish with Walrus Oil. Definitely some errors, but only I know about them. You can see the progress in the Works in Progess section. @heppnerguy- this was done over a couple of weeks, just so ya know!10 points -
Special order from my wife
lawson56 and 8 others reacted to scrollerpete for a topic
Not scroll saw related, my wife likes to collect the saucer and tea cup and after coming back from Florida, her friends brought some over as gifts. She said I need another display. As the saying say”happy wife is happy life”. I used red oak and minwax stain. She likes it so browny points for me. The first picture is the one that she purchased years ago, the next two are the one that I made.9 points -

Today's post is a pattern that I have had for quite some time and I fell in love with it when I first saw it. This cute little project's pattern was made by Sam Custodio and had me hooked from the get go. It seems that I forget about it way too often and a couple of days ago I spotted it and had nothing pressing in my 'to do list' so I printed the pattern and took it to my shop. I only had about a half dozen small cuts left to have it all cut out, so I jumped on it this morning and finished it. I decided a quick and easy frame would be better than the over lapping backer board that I often do, so I found a piece of scrap wood that I thought might do the trick and made a glue on frame and used a piece of black poster board and threw on a coat of spray finish and it is ready to hang on my shop wall. I cut it from 1/4 lnch BB Ply and used a #3 Pegas MGT blade. Dick heppnerguy8 points -

one for my Granddaughter and her husband.
meflick and 2 others reacted to heppnerguy for a topic
My Granddaughter and her husband are in the process of moving into their brand new home so I thought they might like to have a name plaque by their front door to greet visitors. It is also only about a week away from their 20 anniversary so I added their marriage year to it also. I copied the idea for it from something I saw on line. I used a #3 Pegas MGT blade and cut it into what I believe to be Mahogany 3/4 inch base. All of the like colored wood I received from my son and I am not sure of the species of it. I mailed it out this morning so I will not get a response for a few days. Dick heppnerguy3 points -

I was a “Woodworker” before I was a “Scroller “. As a woodworker, you always finish all sides of a piece equally. As Kevin mentioned, to allow equal moisture absorption. The possibility of warping is there. It may not happen, but why chance it? And, it does cheapen the look as it is almost impossible to not get finish on the back side, or even the bottom of the piece.2 points

Finishing Opinions wanted! Wall pieces specfically...
Greatgrandpawrichard and one other reacted to kmmcrafts for a topic
Good topic, I myself do finish "all" of the project the same.. I know the piece isn't seen by only the person that hangs it on the wall.. but to me it just doesn't make the piece seem cheapened up. Also if it is solid timber rather than ply, the wood will still breath and if only the front side is finished ( sealed ) the back side can and probably will breath so there is still a possibility of the piece warping / cupping... I'm not sure if it's overkill or not.. that's just my thinking process and what I do..2 points -
Thank you Kevin for looking this up for me, much appreciated. I must have a bit newer one since I have the white flip tension lever on top. So I will have to do what Ray suggested. I am thinking for switching to the Pegas clamps, which probably doesn't allow that either, is my thinking. Thanks again! mc2 points

Dennisfm56 and one other reacted to heppnerguy for a topic
Nice piece. I tried my first intarsia many years ago before I even had a scroll saw, just to see if I could do it. I used my band saw and different shades of cedar and was surprised that I was able to do it. I drew a pattern of a dolphin that had only 7 pieces to it. Way to go. you probably will be making a lot more intarsia items in your future. Dick heppnerguy2 points -

Great work. My wife and I have some walking sticks. I think I have 18 all made from Osage orange and contorted hazelnut. They all sit in a big bucket now. A few I made for a friend. Doing that is a great idea.1 point

If your saw doesn't have that lever it will have the black knob at the rear that is to be used to adjust the arm height. It wasn't meant to be used for tension adjustment but can be.1 point

Finally got a couple done.
danny reacted to heppnerguy for a topic
I bought the Kleenex pattern from Sue Mey. I thought it might be fun to have a decorative box for her Kleenex and I let her choose the pattern for it. It was a bit challenging on the lid as I cut the little fairies hand and feet. They are very small and delicate. I choose a 2/0 Pegas to make that delicate cut and it came out perfect. I cut it from 1/4 inch Juniper and gave it one coat of spray finish. I thought it was not worthy of more coats, as it is just a fun piece anyway. Next on up is a cross pattern I started to cut about a year ago and got a little upset as the sawdust would not blow off my project as I cut and I could not see the lines very well, so I set it aside. I saw it laying on one of my storages in my garage and thought I would go ahead and finish cutting it, not remembering why I had given up on it before. As I started cutting it, it became quite apparent as to why I decided not to cut finish it. Cedar seems to have that problem for me a lot. No other wood does that to me. I decided to try a smaller blade and see if that might help solve my problem. It did help a little but it did not change things a lot. I also used a #2/0R Pegus blade and decided to finish anyway. So here is the results of my effort. The wood is red cedar 1/8th inch. I will try to stay away from it from now on as much as possible though. Dick heppnerguy1 point -

Very nice. I need to build on for my walking stick... I have been using it since the 1970's and carving on it. Not good carving, around the campfire with a #10 Buck knife carving. The one thing the grandkid fight over who is going to get grandpa's walking stick when he croaks. Croaks is the term they use,,, I think it is one of my pronouns now.1 point -

Cameo Box
danny reacted to heppnerguy for a topic
I hope you continue to make some more boxes. It was one of Steve Goods patterns that peeked my interest in scrolling. Before I started scrolling I only did intarsia. I was getting tired of intarsia but always thought scrolling was things like an outline of a heart or maybe a cat with no details to them and I just found it boring to make and look at. The pattern that stuck my curiosity was a heart shaped box that looked like it was woven. When I found his page and looked at how it was done, I was hooked on scrolling and have been at it every since. Dick heppnerguy1 point -

Being this was the first box I've cut, I wanted to use a lesser expensive wood to test my skills and to find out if I would actually like doing this. The other reason I used this pine is because it was a true 1/4-inch whereas the other materials I had (Birch, Maple, Oak) are not true 1/4-inch. The inside of the box does have liners as the pattern Steve Good designed. I originally painted them red but there wasn't enough contrast between the dark stain and the red backer so I painted the backers an off-white using artist acrylic paint. I do plan on adding Flocking which is similar to the felt lining. I would have preferred to use a solid exotic wood rather than plywood but I'm working on a budget. I have to make due with what I can afford.1 point

That is the first intarsia I cut, back in 1996, from a pattern in Scroll Saw Woodworks and Crafts. I cut it entirely from western red cedar. Looks like you did a good job on it. Tom1 point

Your box is great. Boxes are fun to make and yes, time consuming, but worth it when they come out nice. For that reason, and for as much time and effort you put in to making this box, I feel you could have use a better species of wood. Pine does not take stain well. Alos, if it was me making this box, I would have installed backers on the inside of the box walls, of a contrasting material (like the Cameo), and then added a felt or other type lining. Open lattice type boxes lack practicality, which I think most would prefer to have.1 point
