I was looking at patterns on ETSY and ran across this ship. I think these paddle wheelers are so cool and always enjoy it when I see one cruising a river. I immediately knew I needed to get this pattern and cut it. So I bought this pattern for just over $4 and set about seeing how I was going to cut it and how. I have to say, I did do a little bit of changes on the pattern as I cut it because I did not like everything about it but I wanted to keep it as close to the original as I could out of respect for the pattern maker. I really did not understand what the strange shapes on the windows were and decided not to cut everyone of them but did most of the them. Because I had so many comments about the frame I used on the recent moose pattern I cut, I decided to try and make the frame match the object within it. I decided to groove the frame on my router and insert a rope in the groove. My thinking on this was the connection of an anchor and anchor rope. The next problem I had was where the rope ends met at the bottom of the frame so I decided to cut me an anchor to help cover the rope connection. I was going to make my anchor outline of a different color for accent but really was not satisfied with the look so I left them the same color. I cut this with a #3 MGT Pegas blade on a 3/8 BB Ply. I put a shellac finish on the frame and just waxed the surface of the rest of the project. I have to say that I am not completely satisfied with the end results and if I ever make another one of these I think I would not put the rope in the frame and I would cut all the windows in their natural shape and forget whatever is going on in them, in the pattern. Garage's Garage's

Continuning with my Miniture kick that I am on I found these old buildings I had made years back when I had my HO scale railroad, forgot I had them. So I decided to cut the doors out and make some Garages for Hot Wheels I found some old signage online cut a pasted them on the sides, The Logo is hand painted. Hot Wheels not Nascar. I will be going to the Flea Market in the A.M. Keeping my fingers crossed.

    Finally

After lots of head scratching my DeWalt scroll saw has a new home. It was just parked on a metal welding table my son fabricated. Not the handiest situation. Not the right height. No place for my feet. Just not a satisfactory location at all. So, I built a stand with a 15° front tilt and locking wheels. I'll sit on an adjustable height office chair with a high back and generous arms. That chair served to determine the height of the front of the table. I can rest my arms on the chairs arms and it's just right to manipulate the work on the saw table. It's really quite comfy. Now, the sawdust can begin accumulating.

  5. Just finished this leopard piece. I'm planning to donate it to The Farmer's House for their auction. This took about 15 hours to cut and about 1 hour to design the pattern. It's 11 x 14 x 1/8 inches Baltic Birch ply. Cut with Pegas spiral blades.

  7. Well as some of you know I had a heart procedure a month ago. My stomach started hurting last week pretty darn bad. Come to find out I have a really bad bacterial infection in my abdomen. I have been poked, prodded, stuck, scanned and looked at. All is good just an infection. All that being said, I spent some time in the shop and finished this Sam Elliot (H. Botas Pattern). I cut it out of a 1/2" Acadia cutting board. I was wondering if I should frame it or leave it as is. What do you all think?

This is a horse stall sign, made for a customer a few years `ago now. Basically, shop scrap, painted with craft store paints. All designs were by T & E design. Craft store pegs for hanging horse tack. The rope sign hanger was from a weird one I found at $-tree. It was fun especially since I was told -"Your own way"--she did like it very much.

  9. Combining the pattern forums seems like the logical thing to do. I never look at the ratings of the answers (upvotes) in the Q and A section. I simply read through the answers. If I feel I have something that could be added, I'll make a post. While I do enjoy reading through the Business forum, I very rarely make a post there because I'm not selling on any platform other than word of mouth and maybe a yard sale or occasional craft show. I do like when posters refer to items that sell. While I'm not into scrolling to earn a living, I do enjoy the occasional sell to help support the hobby. I'm planning on giving support to the Village forum and even if it was moved to groups, it wouldn't be an issue. Again, Other Woodworking is a forum I enjoy because I get to see some of the beautiful creations some of our master craftsmen have made. I like the new name change for Hot Deals and Announcements. Regardless of what anyone in the forum likes, I believe Travis should do whatever is necessary to make the Village easy to operate as an administrator. To me it seems he puts a lot of work into this forum and I'm sure it requires a lot of his time. Other scroll saw forums do not have near the traffic as the Village.

  10. Put a screw eye in one of the sides which will not be visible when assembled. Use this and a bent wire hook to hold the piece up while painting. Won't have to touch it once it is hung up, and all painted sides can be done at once. Tom

Paul is right! Stop Beating Yourself Up! Even with you mentioning the issues, I couldn't see them. It came out great and I like the rope frame. It's very original!

  13. I crafted this plaque using ribbon striped (quarter sawed) sapele. When cutting the tree I set my saw at approximately a two degree angle. The tree worked well for this because it was one continuous cut. I pushed the tree out about 1/2 way and did a lot of sanding with a sanding mop. I'm very happy with the look.

  14. I have also used Trex. Facia boards are available at some Lowe's stores up to 11" wide. It is sure hard on blades but there is no need for finish. I also painted a piece black and used it for the backer.

    Sorta new approach

that’s kind of what I do when I make these signs. I cut all of it out of a flat board and glue everything back in at different heights. I also paint everything before I glue it together. If the sign is too big for my saw I cut everything out of different thickness of wood and paint it and glue it together.

  18. Yes they would be and yes I have searched for them. I find it easier to just turn the vacuum off for the short time instead of the hassle of undoing the strapping for the jar & dealing with the sawdust.

Dick, You have done an amazing job. The rope around the frame is a great addition. If you do plan to recut and add the rope, my only suggestion would be to put the join in the corner with the anchor there. I would also place that on the right hand corner by the bow of the boat. That is generally where a boat anchors from.

I think you are doing mighty fine, Dick. Coming up with the rope around the frame in my opinion is genius. The covering the ends of the rope with the anchor was also a smart move. The cutting, in my opinion, is flawless. Like Scrappile said, changing the windows may alter the entire feel of the pattern.

  25. Thank you so much. I think I understand what you are saying and do understand how difficult it must be to make a video. I did try a tree with your instructions...my trunk and large branches worked but my gaps around the leaves are too big. I believe I used too wide of a blade. I used a spiral blade for the first time for those (it sounds like I need to use the same blade throughout). I don't think I like the spiral blade very much because it cuts pretty wide and seems a bit squirly. I will try again with a smaller width blade....I may end up calling you for help if I keep having difficulty . Thanks again for sharing all your knowledge. It is very much appreciated!

  26. Kevin, what about using Trex (or similar) decking? It is practically indestructible as far as weather goes and I believe you can get it in different colors.

Nice you found a way that is comfortable and still enables you to get your work done. I tried tilting my saw but I was never comfortable with it so I continue to use my saw in a flat possition Dick heppnerguy

Having been in model trains I can see why your scrolling has brought to where it is today. I got to go through the largest model train display in the world, which is located in Germany. If you have not seen it you should look it up on Youtube. I have been enjoying watching your posts. There are several other posts of it on YouTube also. Dick heppnerguy

I think the odd shapes in the windows is to simulate reflection from the sun. That was my first thought when I looked at your picture. May not look as real if you change it,,, but then again, maybe with the windows window shape I may think still cool, just a cloudy day!

  32. The video I did on inlays is a few years old and I'm doing it a bit different now. I really should update it but making videos really isn't my thing. Currently when I do an inlay I start with two pieces of wood about .4" thick, stack them and cut through. I'm using a #5 super sharp blade and set my saw about 1.6 degree angle. The angle depends on your blade size and brand, wood thickness and hardness. Sometimes my inlays end up a bit tight and then sometimes loose. After I glue the pieces in I run it through my drum sander to clean it up and end up with a finished piece that is about 3/8" thick. When I did this tree the wood I used was 3/4" I set my saw at about 2 degrees because I didn't want the tree to push up as far as 3/8". Hope that makes some sense to you. If not, send me a message and I am happy to share my phone number with you.

    Color Scroll Saw Challenge

Much work went into this collection of Bad Bob's Custom Motors cars. Several coats of white primer sanding between coats until smooth and the wood grain did not show through. Then multiple coats of flat acrylic paint were sanded between each coat until the white primer was covered. It took a lot of coats for the yellow one. I topped them off with clear gloss acrylic. The was a yellow sedan, but my grandson wanted to give it to a friend for a birthday gift before I decided to take the photo.
