  1. Well all of the painting and glue up are done, plus I have 2 coats of Lacquer on them. This weekend I will wood burn my signature and the date, then I will install the hanger brackets. From then on they will have time to let the finish cure and the smell of the Lacquer disappear before I give them to the recipients that I have chosen. Dick

  2. I know it’s not scroll saw work but I’m bragging on the crew.

  3. Okay, I almost wasn't going to post this since it is just a scrolled heart, nothing fancy but tricky inlaying it in there. I did inlay a few on cutting boards (with the help of you folks) and now I tried it on a box. Nothing fantastic like all the wonderful scroll work that everyone puts on here, but its a start for me. This is now my second box I have ever made. I kind of like boxes. But hope to move on to other scrolling adventures and move from hearts . The wood is Spalted Hackberry and walnut. I had a challenge with the mortise lock but it does work and actually I need help putting hinges on and keeping them level for the next time I make another box...they are a bit wonky but at least they do work.

  5. I think I like the plain wood the best, but when I do a color fill. I'm like a kid waiting on Christmas. It's hard for me to wait to find out how whatever new combination of colors and metallic powders that I used comes out. The colors in this one reminds me of Vincent Van Gogh's, The Starry Night because of its mix of highlights along with the blues and greens. This one surprised me.

    Word in a word sign

Don graciously made this pattern for me, thanks Don. I used to work with a guy over 25 years ago that just turned 80 years old. I haven't seen him or his family for at least 10 years. I actually taught his oldest daughter how to drive. I was given an invite to his surprise birthday party that she was giving him. Don made this pattern and it's a good thing that I made it the next day,, I was off by a week on the date of the party. I didn't have time to do anything fancy with it. I was planning on using BB Ply but found a piece of Cedar. I had thought that it would be a little nicer than the ply, but it didn't have much grain. 1/4" Cedar, used a FD UR1 and a few coats of lacquer.

  10. Here is the final Sam Elliot. I chose a framing method I had not used before. I glued the piece on a larger backer board and then framed it. The frame is heart pine that was revived from an old roof deck. My brother gave me some.

  11. Never thought of using that to cover tools. I always gave a coat of it to my pen when I finished one. Supposedly this is what they use in museums to protect pieces in displays. Least us pen makers believed that. I think way back when I paid $27 for a small can.

  17. Beautiful box! And really cool sled. I wouldn’t dare show a picture of mine. I want to get into more boxes and things so I need to build a better one.

  18. Dave, Yes, that makes sense, about no need for the plate or splitter.... I suppose I can try to make some sort of sliding stop block that moves on one of those T tracks like in the picture, I could router it into the base of my sled to one side if the wood base is thick enough... Hmmm, you got me thinking ...thanks again

  19. I'd love to know all of your steps on the building of these boxes. What did you use for the dovetailing etc.? I love boxes bowls and baskets and am always looking for more info on how others do it. Your work is astounding. I had no idea of your talent until now. You are very good at what you do.

  22. I crafted this plaque using ribbon striped (quarter sawed) sapele. When cutting the tree I set my saw at approximately a two degree angle. The tree worked well for this because it was one continuous cut. I pushed the tree out about 1/2 way and did a lot of sanding with a sanding mop. I'm very happy with the look.

  31. Great bunch! Lots of memories, I have a hammer just like the gentleman on the right your left. I picked it up along the road. I love it when there is a lot of construction going on around my area, I find a lot of nice tools along the road. I envy you having grandkids close. I only have three and they are a long ways away.

  32. Well, the most important thing to have is patience. 2nd is tenacity and it appears that you were blessed with both. I used one of those jigs and actually owned one at one time. Mine did have the Craftsman brand name on it. If you ever decide to do a video, I'd love to see how you do it.

  33. When I use my sled I take the insert plate and splitter off. Really no need for it. The only other thing you might think about is being able to use a stop block so you can duplicate parts. Not sure how you can do that with the dowel. My saw is a left tilt so I have the blade on the left side of the sled with more working distance on the rt.

  34. Awww, thanks Ray, you are quite generous. So I used a vintage Porter Cable Router Jig (it weighs about 50#) and my Dewalt 618 router to make the dovetails. I only use that router for doing Dovetails, because once you set your bit to make the perfect depth, you don't every want to ever change it. There are videos on how to use this jig but I was taught how to do it in an unconventional way by an elderly gentleman which is a lot faster. I only know how to make blind dovetails on the jig, but with this technique (dovetails on both sides of the corner) you make a 45 degree cut down the corner after your first corner is put together. I liked using my Chop saw because it has a dead on laser so my cuts were perfect, however they were not fully cut through. I stood the corner on end and cut down through it lengthwise. I mentioned this in an earlier thread: I took small scraps of walnut, cut them to the thickness of the Hackberry, made a half blind dovetail like I always do. took that piece to the bandsaw and cut off most of what was left of the walnut (carefully), then took it to the chop saw and cut that at a 45 degrees, did it again until I did it 8 times for 4 pieces of Hackberry (2 on each side) than I glued it all together Anyway, this procedure really needs a video. I am hoping to make my next box primarily out of walnut and then have the accent corners be purple heart...but purple heart is a bugger to work with. I am hoping to try Dave Monk's method of cutting the corners...In addition, I am a very slooooow scroller so I am currently making a picture (rather than a heart) to put on the top...who knows if I will ever finish it.

  35. Your sled and it's fences can span your saw table and a 45° cut through the front and back fence will help with accuracy. A solid block, like 3" thick, should be glued to the back of the back fence, spanning the cut line, for safety. Both fences should be at least tall enough to allow for manipulating the sled and still keep the fingers safe. I use two miter slot runners and generous wax under my sled.

  40. Great saw and even though some people don't like them, I hope you got either the stock light or some type of aftermarket light. The lights make a difference seeing the black blades against the pattern.

  41. Congratulations. Is this your first scroll saw or just the first Dewalt? The Dewalt benefits greatly when combined with a couple aftermarket accessories. I would recommend connecting it to a footswitch, as Dewalts are notorious for flaky on/off switches. Dust gets inside and eventually your saw won't turn on. I had a footswitch on mine for many years and it eliminated the problem. A footswitch also makes any saw much easier to control. Also consider adding a lift mechanism. There are a couple versions available. Mine was the Jim Dandy Easy Lift Easy Lift System for DeWalt Scroll Saw DW788 – Jim Dandy Supplies. They are a very simple device that helps raise the top arm up when doing fretwork.

    Tractor

I wanted it to look like a John Deere but didn't use a name so I wouldn't get hit with infringement rights. The area I live is very rural with a lot of farming. During farming season, about every field you drive by has a piece of John Deere equipment out working. Thought a piece with a "green" tractor would sell in my area.

  46. Jerry, I didn't have a pattern...Well, I did used my mother's 1930's little cedar chest that she got when she graduated from school as the shape. I liked the round front and back top and the little feet and handles. I think I will make more like this but try different scroll ideas...

  47. Gene, Well, I kind of figured I wanted the dovetails to be on both sides, so I took small scraps of walnut, cut them to the thickness of the Hackberry, made a dovetail like I always do (I can't remember what they are called, "half blind dovetails" maybe?") took that piece to the bandsaw and cut off most of what was left of the walnut (carefully), then took it to the chop saw and cut that at a 45 degrees, did it again until I did it 8 times for 4 pieces of Hackberry (2 on each side) than I glued it all together and by golly it worked! I tried it on 1/2 inch thickness the first time and I thought it too thin. This is just under 3/4" and it was less scary. hope that makes sense.
