  1. I had a total knee replacement done on Monday and all of the pre-surgery necessities put a damper on my cutting. I was able to finish a few, even some I didn't photograph because they were commissions and had shown them in the past. I was trying to get the two Mother's Day pieces (both Steve Good patterns) cut before my surgery but unfortunately I was in the shop today after physical therapy putting on the last touches. The "All I Am" piece went to my mother who is 90 years old. It is cut from 1/4 Birch ply stained natural with a 1/4-inch pine backer painted red except for the greenery of the rose stems. The colors were done with acrylic hobby paint thinned down and sprayed on with an air brush. The "Happy Mother's Day" piece was for the wife and "signed by all the critters" (dogs, cats, fish). And if you didn't know a fish could sign something, there is a pair of lips with bubbles. The heart and letters were again sprayed red with acrylic hobby paint. The backer is stained with Minwax Espresso. The two car pieces were double stacked 1/4-inch Birch from Jim Blume's Americana series #18. They were stained with Minwax Natural. The backers are pine painted black. The frames are cut down from a 1X8 and fit to the piece after staining with Natural. All four projects were sprayed with 4-coats of gloss Clear Acrylic with a light sanding of 500 grit between coats. I hope you enjoy. BTW, the Americana 18 pattern is a relatively easy cut even though it has a substantial number of holes. I hope you enjoy!

  3. My latest Alex Fox bowl or basket. I think this is C-30. I used 1/4 Baltic Birch plywood 10" square. Cut on the Pegas Scroll Saw using Pegas #1 MGT blades. The glue up took time to get the exact placement of each ring. After sanding with a Mac Mop, coat of spray Lacquer Clear Gloss, sanding and then another coat. Comments welcome.

This is my one and only. I googled and found a post by Paul @Scrappile and Ray @OCtoolguy (probably pretty old post) when I was looking for a scrollsaw. And that is how landed here. Paul has encouraged me from the get go and since then I have been very welcomed here by all. I do not do any other social media so this is my home. Travis, thanks for developing this!

  8. I cut two of these years ago on my first scroll saw. If I remember correctly, they are the only flowers I have ever cut. It is solid wood, not plywood.

    A couple more.

The stacking bowls are a Steve Good pattern. I used 1" reclaimed Elm and 1/4" Sapelle. Finished with beeswax/mineral oil. I have no idea what woods the hands are. Both pieces were given to me. Possibly maple and cherry.

  10. This is my first intarsia, my second and my third. By that I mean every piece was cut at least twice, some three times and some I just said good enough. Lots of errors, but I enjoyed the trip. Well be doing more in the future, time allowing. Made this for my Granddaughter, a nurse at Providence Hospital in Portland, Ore. She is doing very well for herself. Less than a year there and they have already asked her to be a Charge Nurse. Not real sure what that means but sounds good. Needless to say, Grandpa is very proud of her. The snakes and feathers are Canary wood, the upright, inlay and backer boarder is Black Walnut and the light brown is Monkey Pod. The white pieces are casein, which is a product made from milk protien. It is beautiful makes great pens. I put a picture here so you can see what it look like.

  11. The original “Stencil Art” I used for these pieces is by Lee Czembowski, aka BoyKidWonder (BKW). The characters, in BKW’s art, were inspired by characters in comics and the like, and created with slightly naughty interpretations. You may recognize many of the characters. Since they are already stencils, I had to do very little work to adapt them as patterns for the Scroll Saw other than adjusting pattern size. I decided to break away from my usual large panel presentations and do this series of B&W cuttings in small 5/32” x 6 1/4” x 8 1/4” solid core Maple panels affixed onto painted oversized ¼”x 8” x10” BB ply backers. Of course, I could not stop myself from adding a little color by painting the oversized backer frame area pink. After assembly, all panels were protected with Clear Gloss Acrylic. The small pattern size and the intricate details required me to exclusively use Pegas #2/0 spiral blades as many cutouts were not much wider than the blades themselves. I also had to be extra careful not to cut though between adjacent areas as many were very close together. My success rate was maybe 98%. And, yes, in a few places CA glue came to the rescue. I also parted from making custom frames for these pieces. I found very inexpensive – less than $3 each - 8” x 10” frames on Amazon, which I decided to use. The painted black rails of the frames are about 1/2” wide and were supplied with the usual glass (plastic), matt board and backer for hanging or tabletop standing, all of which I discarded. I only had to add a small sawtooth hanger to each frame and the pieces were complete. Comments and critiques always welcome.

    Gnomes x2

I was given some beeswax from a friend so one of these gnomes is a thank you gift. They are cut from various thickness of bb ply. One of the beehives I did veining and the other one I created a groove and then shaded it. Pattern purchased from Whimsical Inklings in Design Bundles. Acrylic paint and then a couple coats of shellac.

    Wren Houses

I saw this Wren House somewhere and wanted one like it. I made this one out of Western Red Cedar with no finish. It has been up a couple years and has been occupied. We are waiting to see if the Wrens will nest this year. We have been hearing them all over the place lately.

I remember the early days, you could go to 5-6 different places with new stuff to read and chat about. I can't tell if the online community is smaller/less active, or if it's just spread out more across many different platforms. Or maybe online forums are no longer the "cool place to be" LOL. I will admit, online forums like SSV are a little out of fashion right now. I have a feeling it will swing back away from traditional social media. Especially since it is a treasure trove of great information in a single place.

I've belonged to several different woodworking forums over the years. The scrolling forums have always been much more supportive, friendly and non-argumentative than most of the general woodworking forums. I think SSWW&C was the first scrolling forum I joined. It used to be a very active place, but as others have said, participation has declined a lot in recent years. I joined here in 2011, on the advice of Dan is SoCal (dgman) and have thoroughly enjoyed the experience here. I don't do Facebook, Instagram or any of the other social media platforms, just a few scrolling/ww'ing forums. That's plenty for me. Great site and thanks to you Travis for all of your hard work in creating & managing this place.

Adding my two cents worth. I am a member of three forums and as mentioned, the SWWC forum seems to be dying, the Cafe forum has many friends even though there is a lot of breakfast talk, and SSV which is the most active. I am also on Facebook, but that is for advertising purposes to sell Pegas supplies. This is my go-to forum.

  22. I am slower than molasses in January but I finally got it done. My photography skills aren't very good so I apologize for the glare. So I scrolled sawed my epoxy resin painting.... Here are my steps: I painted a galaxy pic on plywood, added a layer of epoxy resin (made a dam around the wood with tape), painted more stars for depth, another layer of epoxy, airbrushed and added the moon, and another layer of epoxy. Let that dry 2 weeks than scroll sawed my Daughter and her husband's wedding pic (silhouette) into the resin/picture (that was scary). Glued a backing of 1/4" BB on to it, sanded the epoxy, poured black diamond epoxy into the silhouette (unfortunatly the camera does not pick up the sparkles) let that tack up, added another clear layer of epoxy to the entire pic. Added my 3/4" 'tree frame' which are missing a few leaves here and there . I did carve some of the tree frame for fun after I scrollsaw cut it. Added one more layer of epoxy and done! I do want to thank all the folks who have helped me and encouraged me along the way. I did use @Dave Monk technique on "lifting the trees" out of the wood. I also looked at a lot of all of your great works (gallery and bragging rights) to get some of my ideas...Thank you!

When I first started scrolling (maybe around 2007-2008ish), there were a number of places folks could hang out. Yahoo groups were a big thing for scrolling communities. They were basically online communities, kinda like SSV. There were tons of really specialized groups you could choose from, talk shop, share patterns, etc. Then there was SSW&C forum, which was pretty good. When I started SSV in 2009, I was one of many. But Yahoo eventually shut down their user groups and folks needed to find a new home. It kinda makes me wonder where everybody is hanging out nowadays. I'm so in my own little bubble at SSV, that I really don't know anymore. I figure since you guys tend to have your finger on the pulse a bit better than I do, where are people hanging out? Do people use forums? If so, which ones? Are they all on Facebook? (SSV isn't going anywhere, BTW....I'm just curious)

As the WWW has developed over the years this is true with many sites. I think the ones that have lasted have listened to the people that visit the site and made the changes that were needed. You do a great job here @Travis.

I have been on the magazine board for about 15 years and have watched it trickle to a shell of its former glory. (There might be 10 or so active posters). I lived through the software debacle and actually was a beta tester for the current format which I have never warmed up to. As for folks monitoring the site, there used to be three or four staffers who were very involved in the board. I found The Village during the software conversion and have been a member for a few years. Since I don't do FB, the two forums are my outlets. I do follow both on Instagram. As for Steve's board, it was a grand idea that I tried for about a month. I think I even tried the Cafe.

There are a lot of scroll-saw groups on face book. The format is terrible, and there are way too many members of all who post the same thing in all groups—lots of repetition and poor or no moderation. There are four scrollsaw forums I visit at least weekly. In three of those I only look at new posts to see if anything is interesting. There is very little. Scrollsaw Workshop Community should shut down. Very little traffic is there, and Steve doesn't monitor the forum. Scroll Saw Woodworking and Crafts Message Board is better, but there is very little activity. I do participate there occasionally. I don't think anyone from the publisher actually monitors the board. If it went away, I would not miss it. The Scrollers Cafe seems to mostly have threads about what members are having for breakfast. There is very little other activity. I get an email once a week with a list of all the new topics. Scroll Saw Village is home. There is something new and interesting here every day. I regularly send people here.

When Steve Good started his Community Forum, I was one of the first to sign up. I was on that forum for several years. Unfortunately, it became very political. I complained to the moderator with no support from him. So, I left. Went to the Scrollsaw Woodworking and crafts forum till they changed their forum format. Everyone hated it including myself. I heard about SSV and signed up. Been here ever since. I don’t do any social media so, this is my home.

I searched out all of the forums and this is by far my favorite. I spend too much time on the computer so I'm glad there are not many. Thanks Travis for creating the warm and welcoming atmosphere that SSV has. I've learned everything I know about scrolling from this forum. Steve Good does a wonderful job of creating patterns and reviewing tools and related equipment so I'm very thankful for his site also. Keep doing what you are doing. We all appreciate it.

My latest scroll saw wood art piece. This one is not my pattern, but I don't know who's it is. I cut this because I like the picture, and because I grew up learning to drive in a pickup truck just like this one.

I found this pattern on Steve Good's sight and thought that he would enjoy this one for his room. I know he is only going to be three but I also know how much he enjoyed the Spiderman I cut for him on Christmas. So I am quite sure he will enjoy this one also. I hope to find time to make him some kind of toy to play with also. Dick heppnerguy
