Retiring from Flea Markets.

Friends have asked me about Flea Markets and craft fairs. I tell them I worked for almost 60 years and now am retired. I don't care to have another job. I enjoy scrolling and make things for family, friends and myself. I get a lot of satisfaction giving stuff away. Jerry5 points -

I have only ever done one market and I hated it. If I get any customers it is always from word of mouth. Rest your body Bobby, you only get one. Marg3 points

I had a total knee replacement done on Monday and all of the pre-surgery necessities put a damper on my cutting. I was able to finish a few, even some I didn't photograph because they were commissions and had shown them in the past. I was trying to get the two Mother's Day pieces (both Steve Good patterns) cut before my surgery but unfortunately I was in the shop today after physical therapy putting on the last touches. The "All I Am" piece went to my mother who is 90 years old. It is cut from 1/4 Birch ply stained natural with a 1/4-inch pine backer painted red except for the greenery of the rose stems. The colors were done with acrylic hobby paint thinned down and sprayed on with an air brush. The "Happy Mother's Day" piece was for the wife and "signed by all the critters" (dogs, cats, fish). And if you didn't know a fish could sign something, there is a pair of lips with bubbles. The heart and letters were again sprayed red with acrylic hobby paint. The backer is stained with Minwax Espresso. The two car pieces were double stacked 1/4-inch Birch from Jim Blume's Americana series #18. They were stained with Minwax Natural. The backers are pine painted black. The frames are cut down from a 1X8 and fit to the piece after staining with Natural. All four projects were sprayed with 4-coats of gloss Clear Acrylic with a light sanding of 500 grit between coats. I hope you enjoy. BTW, the Americana 18 pattern is a relatively easy cut even though it has a substantial number of holes. I hope you enjoy!3 points

I remember the early days, you could go to 5-6 different places with new stuff to read and chat about. I can't tell if the online community is smaller/less active, or if it's just spread out more across many different platforms. Or maybe online forums are no longer the "cool place to be" LOL. I will admit, online forums like SSV are a little out of fashion right now. I have a feeling it will swing back away from traditional social media. Especially since it is a treasure trove of great information in a single place.3 points

My family are saturated with scroll saw works I have given them. They have gently suggested that I try selling some of my stuff (rather than giving it to them.)2 points

I don't know if I should congratulate you or send condolences. I feel certain you will be much happier scrolling for your family and yourself. The projects you complete will be much more meaningful. Regardless, I'm glad you'll be sticking around so we can see you great works here at the Village.2 points

Hi everyone. Just finished this Victorian clock. I want to thank Ron Johnson for getting me this pattern and giving me some tips on how to do it. I made two of them. One is Oak and one is Mahogany. I'm giving this one which is Oak to my granddaughter. whose birthday is June first. She'll be 31. It's a surprise. I think she'll like it. They measure 16 tall and 8 inch wide. The other one has a red dress.1 point

This is my first intarsia, my second and my third. By that I mean every piece was cut at least twice, some three times and some I just said good enough. Lots of errors, but I enjoyed the trip. Well be doing more in the future, time allowing. Made this for my Granddaughter, a nurse at Providence Hospital in Portland, Ore. She is doing very well for herself. Less than a year there and they have already asked her to be a Charge Nurse. Not real sure what that means but sounds good. Needless to say, Grandpa is very proud of her. The snakes and feathers are Canary wood, the upright, inlay and backer boarder is Black Walnut and the light brown is Monkey Pod. The white pieces are casein, which is a product made from milk protien. It is beautiful makes great pens. I put a picture here so you can see what it look like.1 point

Alex Fox Basket C-30

My latest Alex Fox bowl or basket. I think this is C-30. I used 1/4 Baltic Birch plywood 10" square. Cut on the Pegas Scroll Saw using Pegas #1 MGT blades. The glue up took time to get the exact placement of each ring. After sanding with a Mac Mop, coat of spray Lacquer Clear Gloss, sanding and then another coat. Comments welcome.1 point -

Congrats on your "retirement ". I have been doing 1 or 2 sales a year, and that is more than enough. I haven't figured out what people like, so I am generally making stuff Iike.1 point -
I've never been happier scrolling now that I've decided it's about the out come, not the income. No more looking at patterns that I think might sell, and then spending countless hours cutting the same thing, over and over. Now I rarely cut a pattern more than once and I enjoy giving it all away.1 point

Hi all. I finished the article on BB Ply. I did my best to research it, but there isn't a ton of information out there. But I think I got it. I wanted to make it as informative as possible, without getting too far into the weeds. It's intended for scrollers. Could you take a look at it and give any feedback? Did I get my facts right? Did I miss anything that should be included in the article?1 point

I started out on "free4all scroll saw forum" first then sadly it ended, Then one day I stumbled onto this great forum! So thank you Travis for what you do! I've had a lot of things happen to Me over the last few years distracting me from being more active as I used to be... And the fact my computer is something that belongs in a museum? So Travis please "keep on Trucking!" That's all folks, Bob1 point

This is my one and only. I googled and found a post by Paul @Scrappile and Ray @OCtoolguy (probably pretty old post) when I was looking for a scrollsaw. And that is how landed here. Paul has encouraged me from the get go and since then I have been very welcomed here by all. I do not do any other social media so this is my home. Travis, thanks for developing this!1 point

Adding my two cents worth. I am a member of three forums and as mentioned, the SWWC forum seems to be dying, the Cafe forum has many friends even though there is a lot of breakfast talk, and SSV which is the most active. I am also on Facebook, but that is for advertising purposes to sell Pegas supplies. This is my go-to forum.1 point -
This is my "goto" site. . pretty active, well moderated (at least in my opinion , pleasant people and relevant content.1 point

As the WWW has developed over the years this is true with many sites. I think the ones that have lasted have listened to the people that visit the site and made the changes that were needed. You do a great job here @Travis.1 point

I have been on the magazine board for about 15 years and have watched it trickle to a shell of its former glory. (There might be 10 or so active posters). I lived through the software debacle and actually was a beta tester for the current format which I have never warmed up to. As for folks monitoring the site, there used to be three or four staffers who were very involved in the board. I found The Village during the software conversion and have been a member for a few years. Since I don't do FB, the two forums are my outlets. I do follow both on Instagram. As for Steve's board, it was a grand idea that I tried for about a month. I think I even tried the Cafe.1 point -

Like many others here, this is home. I have pretty much guven up on all the other sites. I am on a few on FB. The one there, I visit most, is Girls with scroll saws. That being said, they seem to mostly do big name signs. Thanks Travis for the site!1 point -
There are a lot of scroll-saw groups on face book. The format is terrible, and there are way too many members of all who post the same thing in all groups—lots of repetition and poor or no moderation. There are four scrollsaw forums I visit at least weekly. In three of those I only look at new posts to see if anything is interesting. There is very little. Scrollsaw Workshop Community should shut down. Very little traffic is there, and Steve doesn't monitor the forum. Scroll Saw Woodworking and Crafts Message Board is better, but there is very little activity. I do participate there occasionally. I don't think anyone from the publisher actually monitors the board. If it went away, I would not miss it. The Scrollers Cafe seems to mostly have threads about what members are having for breakfast. There is very little other activity. I get an email once a week with a list of all the new topics. Scroll Saw Village is home. There is something new and interesting here every day. I regularly send people here.1 point

I only have account in 2 public forums. This village is my first. My 2nd which does astronomy. This village format is nice. I use the all activity to see most traffic. I like the list of forums, bragging rights and user gallery the most. The number of views and likes are pleasant to find. It is the people that make this a great place. The new ideas, artistry, and open mindedness. Super pleasant. Using the village gallery is a bit non obvious. A bit clunky. But it works. The 2nd forum, astronomy , forum is huge. Lots of forum categories, and lots of people. They use abrevievations that I have no clue what they are discussing. There is many many moderators, because there are so many posts. Mostly helpful people but some get confrontational. I signed up there almost a year ago. I learned some good techniques but the creativity is much lower. There is smart people but not many new topics. Most topics are highly specialized in software settings and procedures. Astrophotograhy is too detailed , I don't care about. But the visual forum is where I learn new techniques. The gallery is little used. Most photos are on external site that you can upload huge detailed pics. This village is home. I felt good about joining and feel good contributing. I hope my play with words is taken in a humorus way.1 point

I only know 4 that are active site forums that specialize in scroll sawing. Here, the most active, Scroller Cafe, Steve Good (least active) and SSW&C. I use to visit them all, now this is my home. Once in a while I visit Scroller Cafe, they are nice people, alot of them are from here also.1 point

Finally got these done. Stack cut, 3 layers, 5/16" thick each. #1 Polar blades throughout, 1 layer (top) oak 2 lower layers walnut, one dip of BLO working on the shellac coat to shine them up. 16 hrs total cutting (5 hrs and 20 minutes each basket). Cutting time for a single basket, including double stacking the sides, ends and lids, was 7 hrs. The size is 4 1/2" wide, 8" tall, 9 1/2" long, a total of 331 holes. The pattern is from the book "Classic Fretwork Scroll Saw Patterns" by Patrick Spielman & James Reidle. I'm lazy and hate messing up the finish because of glue, so these are all pinned joints. There is no glue used in these. pins are toothpicks 5/64 hole.1 point

Scroll Saw Table
OCtoolguy reacted to Insane Dust Maker for a topic
A few weeks ago I asked my scroll saw friends here for dimensions of the slot for the blade, for my new table I was making for my highly modified Martlet (Wen), if my memory serves me correctly and please I my be wrong but I think it was Bradford Lock who sent me a few photos with a digital caliper so I could get the measurements. Thank you do much, been using a a week or two now and it perfect thanks once again. I have started work on a very complex project which I estimate will take three to four months to complete, I hear you asking yourselves why so long, well we only have power five hours a day so in that five hours I have to everything normal people would do in 8 hours or more depending on you hemisphere, so at best I can squeeze in maybe on a good day about 2 hours of scrolling, it’s been like that for months and there’s no end in sight, why you ask, simple our corrupt government has stolen all the forgiven aid for self enrichment and now there’s no money for maintenance.0 points
