I need a clock for my shop. A few weeks ago I asked, in PATTERN REQUEST, if anyone had a pattern for clock face for a shop clock that depicted Scrolling. Did not get any usable responses so I decided I needed to make my own. I believe I adopted the pattern of a “Person at a Scroll Saw” from Steve Good’s library quite a while ago, which I have been using to make my “Scroll Saw Art by Frank” signs and I have also included it in my Logo. I figured I could adapt the pattern by adding some bridges to make it a negative cutting and wrap the clock face hour numerals around it. I found a simple clock face I liked on-line. This is what I came up with. The clock face is a 10” diameter 5/32” thick solid core Maple cut panel affixed to a 10” diameter 1/4” BB Ply Backer painted rattle can Flat Black. The Pattern starts out as an 11” x 11” square. I cut the disk out after the cut panel and backer are glued together. The numerals were cut using a Pegas #0 Spiral Blade and the center pattern using a Pegas #3 MGT R blade. The assembled disk was protected with multiple coats of clear spray Acrylic finish. I purchased a “High Torque Long Shaft Quartz HR1688 Clock Movement Mechanism Replacement Clock Kit with 5.4 Inch Long Spade Hands for DIY Handicrafts Repair Clock Parts Shaft Lengths 22.5mm / 0.89 inch” for $9.49 from Amazon. I had used this item for the Dragon Clock I made a while ago that had a larger diameter and made athe mistake of just reordering the same one. The hands are too long for this smaller diameter clock. I should order new shorter hands, but probably won't bother. I made this clock too quickly and there are lots of goofs in both the cutting and finishing, but it will do for hanging in my shop. I will post the pattern in New Pattern Announcements’. Comments welcome but you can skip the critiques.2 points

RJ, I free hand it. I will draw something on the wood and then cut it out and often times I just start cutting. I finished this a couple weeks ago. I scroll sawed the silhouette of my daughter and her husband in epoxy after I painted it. Then I scroll sawed the frame and also did some carving. I am working on my other daughters right now.2 points

Finally...My first scroll saw picture
Scrollshrimp reacted to MarieC for a topic
I am slower than molasses in January but I finally got it done. My photography skills aren't very good so I apologize for the glare. So I scrolled sawed my epoxy resin painting.... Here are my steps: I painted a galaxy pic on plywood, added a layer of epoxy resin (made a dam around the wood with tape), painted more stars for depth, another layer of epoxy, airbrushed and added the moon, and another layer of epoxy. Let that dry 2 weeks than scroll sawed my Daughter and her husband's wedding pic (silhouette) into the resin/picture (that was scary). Glued a backing of 1/4" BB on to it, sanded the epoxy, poured black diamond epoxy into the silhouette (unfortunatly the camera does not pick up the sparkles) let that tack up, added another clear layer of epoxy to the entire pic. Added my 3/4" 'tree frame' which are missing a few leaves here and there . I did carve some of the tree frame for fun after I scrollsaw cut it. Added one more layer of epoxy and done! I do want to thank all the folks who have helped me and encouraged me along the way. I did use @Dave Monk technique on "lifting the trees" out of the wood. I also looked at a lot of all of your great works (gallery and bragging rights) to get some of my ideas...Thank you!1 point -

I'm thinking of changing the name of the User Gallery. It seems a little formal or impersonal. I'm thinking maybe Member Gallery? Waddya think?1 point

User Gallery

Then in a person's profile maybe it should say "Galleries" instead of "Albums". Maybe "My Galleries" if room allows.1 point -
For my two cents, I think "Member Gallery" would be a much better description as to what it actually is compared to "User Gallery."1 point

@Gene Howe I have been working on this also and have the same question. TJ tells us to sand and then spray with polyurethane. I have sanded up to 1000 grit wet & dry sandpaper and still have not achieved the level of polish I want. Maybe I was too impatient and sanding longer would eventually get there. But I stopped and then sprayed with lacquer and it got significantly better. I am still trying for a really polished finish. If you manage to get there, please tell me how you did it.1 point

Glad you are here. Hegners need no work! Says one very happy Hegner owner. If any of your students show a particular interest in Scroll saw work of any kind, please steer them here. We could benefit from some young blood infused into this bunch of scrollers.1 point -

Check out this tutorial I did quite awhile ago. If I did not mention it in the tutorial, I frequently use copies of the cutting pattern as stencils to add the colors to the backer. I will cut out the areas for the different colors on separate printouts. takes a little patience.1 point

I find, going slow is a good thing. Take your time when cutting, enjoy the process, and concentrate on nailing your guidelines. This will help you later on if you decide to do intarsia. Slow and steady wins the race! By nailing your lines, you reduce/eliminate recuts, and also additional fitting.1 point -
