    Word Art

Just finished this word Art piece for my Granddaughter to give to her boss that she works for in there restaurant. I want to that Don in Brookline for doing this pattern for me. It's made out of Oak and measures 3 1/2 wide by 9 1/4 long.

This was going to be another charcuterie board but I had a different idea. Thanks Steve Good for the pattern. I think I’m going to give it to the man who gave me the cherry wood. I used 321 for the finish. Thanks for looking.

  3. A little different project this weekend. This is a ~30 piece segmentation of an Eastern Bluebird. Each piece has at least 3 different colors all done with a rattle can. This is the loose dry-fit stage as I have a 12x12 live edge backer coming in tomorrow so I can glue it up. I am just deciding if I want to put the scripture on the front (via Laser), or on the back near my logo. Plenty of room on either side. This is the scripture I selected: Psalms 104:12 - By them, the birds of the heavens have their habitation; They sing among the branches.

    Lost my virginity

Yes, I bet sometimes you feel like you are moving 1 step forward and 2 steps back, but it sounds like you are making progress even though it is slow...so that is wonderful! It is a long road but hang in there. The brain/neurons takes longer to heal than most other tissues...but they are healing. Keep giving them good feedback (as much normal movement as possible) and they will heal in the correct way. I am praying for you!

  6. Made this Iowa Hawkeye sign for my son. 3/4 inch plywood burnt with a torch and coated with lacquer. First time burning with a torch. I got it a little heavy in one corner and caught it on fire on another corner.

Very slowly MarieC. The frustration is the worst thing I think. It feels like so much to do and so little time ....... EDIT Hi Gene Howe, slowly improving with the emphasis on slowly.

  8. I am slower than molasses in January but I finally got it done. My photography skills aren't very good so I apologize for the glare. So I scrolled sawed my epoxy resin painting.... Here are my steps: I painted a galaxy pic on plywood, added a layer of epoxy resin (made a dam around the wood with tape), painted more stars for depth, another layer of epoxy, airbrushed and added the moon, and another layer of epoxy. Let that dry 2 weeks than scroll sawed my Daughter and her husband's wedding pic (silhouette) into the resin/picture (that was scary). Glued a backing of 1/4" BB on to it, sanded the epoxy, poured black diamond epoxy into the silhouette (unfortunatly the camera does not pick up the sparkles) let that tack up, added another clear layer of epoxy to the entire pic. Added my 3/4" 'tree frame' which are missing a few leaves here and there . I did carve some of the tree frame for fun after I scrollsaw cut it. Added one more layer of epoxy and done! I do want to thank all the folks who have helped me and encouraged me along the way. I did use @Dave Monk technique on "lifting the trees" out of the wood. I also looked at a lot of all of your great works (gallery and bragging rights) to get some of my ideas...Thank you!

  9. So I have this beautiful Russ Beard Lion that I have started cutting, my idea is this is going to be the Centre piece, in front of this will be another animal and the behind the Lion will be another so in fact it will be a three layered project. Bring a ex photographer the back round is going to be and out of focus shot of the typical African Savanna with maybe some blue sky on the top. So here’s my question as can be seen from this pattern Russ let’s you cut through the board at the bottom and a bit on the sides, this would not matter if you were framing it, there’s going to be a front layer with a animal either in on the left or right side. Now would it matter if some of the black backer is can be seen at the bottom of the cut, because this will all be attached the the out of focus backing board.

Other than a few practice patterns, this is my first cutting. 1/8 and1/2 BB. #5 MG. With stock prep, design time and other fiddling around, only took me 4.5 hours. I'm ready for production...

If you check back a couple of weeks on here, we have one member who had 2 of those saws go bad while still new. He took them back and bought a Dewalt or Delta. I'd check out the Hegner mentioned above.

Nice wall of cowboys. They all wear hats. You should make a wooden cowboy hat and hang on the wall. It does not have to be wearable. It could be same size of you portraits.

Really nice. Those letters looked like quite the Challenge. How thick was your wood and what type of blade did you use to cut the small letters with?

    User Gallery

I'm thinking of changing the name of the User Gallery. It seems a little formal or impersonal. I'm thinking maybe Member Gallery? Waddya think?

Then in a person's profile maybe it should say "Galleries" instead of "Albums". Maybe "My Galleries" if room allows.

  30. Wanting to give my beloved Penny something not available at a florist shop for Mother's Day tomorrow, I made a small walnut sasquatch and doweled it to a 1 inch thick oak scrap. The gravel is from our landscaping and "dead shrubs" are dogwood twigs from our trees. A layer of epoxy secures the gravel and drilled holes hold the shrubs. Finished with a coating of brushed on walnut oil. Model is about 8 inches tall overall. Penny was excited and loved it. We both enjoy Bigfoot stories and speculation. A message of my love is underneath. So much fun folks. The Pegas 7R MGT blade let me make one cut for the entire sasquatch outline in the 13/16 inch thick scrap walnut and 1 inch oak. No sanding needed except to break the edge. Did I say it was so much fun? Thank you each and all for your kindnesses, and my best to you all. Don.

Strangely, I have not aged in appearance. That pic was taken about 12 years ago but I still look the same and still wear that cap. Along with my collection of Trump hats.

I turned 82 last April. Age is just a number. We all have to grow older. We don't have to grow up. It's adulting that's tuff. Hope you have a great Birthday, Frank.

  37. You've been busy Ralph. Been sidetracked for a couple of days and pretty busy the rest of the week. Will try to do what you did. I also had found one of Tyler's earlier videos and he said in the video he would have to add an extra space or manually draw to extend the pattern. Jerry

RJ, I free hand it. I will draw something on the wood and then cut it out and often times I just start cutting. I finished this a couple weeks ago. I scroll sawed the silhouette of my daughter and her husband in epoxy after I painted it. Then I scroll sawed the frame and also did some carving. I am working on my other daughters right now.

I am with you! I have made so many goofs but like Ray says, time in the seat really makes the difference. I don't use patterns so no worries for me for going outside the lines....but even without that, I still make screw ups. I really like your first picture. Love the Cactus!

  40. I tried to do this in Inkscape and you have the same issue if you just type. I then split the letters and found that the space aligns differently. If now distribute the letters you get the same size on both. A little work and would be easier to print off and realign.

Been doing cutting of thicker hard woods for intarsia lately. My biggest problem is getting a 90° cut. Did not realize it until I watch the JGR video on "cutting of accuracy". (Actually it is her husband's video). Now that I am aware of it I really concentrate on it especially in turns,,, Getting much better. But i do have to go slower now.

Those saguaros can be a bit tight and intimidating. But go slow helps. Also #1 and 2/0 blades act different. Practice with both blades. Different thickness of wood changes techniques also.

I find, going slow is a good thing. Take your time when cutting, enjoy the process, and concentrate on nailing your guidelines. This will help you later on if you decide to do intarsia. Slow and steady wins the race! By nailing your lines, you reduce/eliminate recuts, and also additional fitting.

    Scroll saw choice?

I have the WEN 3922 which I purchased about 2-months before the LL2156 was introduced to the market. It has served me well however there have been some issues. The blower bellows will wear out quickly. The first time it wore out I contacted WEN and they sent me a replacement under warranty. The second time I decided to go with a fish tank bubbler which has taken care of any bellows problems. One of the reasons I went with the 3922 was the design of the blade clamp over the 3921. These clamps will wear out and eventually strip but can be replaced for approximately $5 each. I order them by the dozen directly from WEN. As you would expect, this is an entry level scroll saw. I have ordered a Pegas 30-inch which should arrive in July. I have cut some nice pieces on the 3922 and I will keep it even after my new saw arrives. Steve Good did a video on the LL2156 that you can view from this here:

I have the Wen LL2156 21 inch. I bought it the end of December. I love it! Haven't had a bit of trouble with it. Steve Good has a good video on the Wen 21, check it out to give you a better idea. If your wife is just starting out I think she would be happy with the Wen 21.
