    Cross for my wife

I saw this cross posted on Etsy and saved a photo of it to my pictures about 3 or 4 months ago. I finally found the time to make it and I could not find the piece again to see about buying the pattern so I just made a pattern from it. The one I saw was made with different colors of wood inset that was so beautiful but as I got into it I began to realize it was going to be more than I was willing to try so just cut out the skeleton pattern I had made and call it good. I thought it was so pretty the was it was in the photo I downloaded but since I turned away from what I really intended to do, I found I still liked it the way it turned out. I just hope when my wife returns home the middle of July, she too will like it. Dick heppnerguy

  2. Just a quick segmentation project I am working on this weekend. I just did the first coat of paint. Need to sand, glue it up and add the gloss finish. Thought it looked pretty good in the loose dry fit stage. But this speaks outdoors to me. looking at a single flow brings me such joy seeing the handiwork in creation.

  3. Summer has always been about being outdoors, enjoying the sights, random encounters with interesting critters, and various activities such as hiking, geocaching, kayaking, archery, etc. Don't have any kayak-related scroll projects yet.

  5. I did this one a while back. When leaving Jasper AB going west there is this very big “lake” not sure if you can call it that it was only about one foot deep ( haven’t been to Jasper for quite a while so not sure if it’s dried up). Anyway we saw a bear walking across the water and it looked like it was walking on water ( the kids called it the Jesus Bear). Even though this picture is a Grizzly walking on ice, it always reminds me of my favorite place on Earth, Jasper.

I have almost completed this jigsaw pattern, just a couple of coats of wax still to do. The Eagle is on vertical grain Sapele and the fish is on cross grain, both pieces of wood were 3/4" thick and I used Pegas Modified Geometry #1, #3 and #7. Turned out OK but I know what I need to do next time to make me happier with it.

  7. My main reason for getting back into wood working is due to this little guy now 14 weeks old. My first grandchild. Poppy's Workshop is open 24/7. This is what is bringing me pure joy. The "LIAM" car was done on a whim, at the request of my daughter during a family dinner one night (advantage my daughter and her husband bought a house 3 doors down from us!). The other cars I cut out a while back, but just left them in dry fit stage. I will sand and finish them when he gets a bit older. Will also build a diner and gas station to go with the cars.

  12. These would be some of my favourite outdoor projects. I don't have a picture of just the "Welcome to the Lake" sign, but I had one hanging on the boat until this spring when hubby dropped it. Now I need to cut another one. The puzzle is one of the spots we like to get to and anchor at for a couple of days. This is on Lake of the Woods, ON.

  14. Hey Everyone! In this scroll saw project video we make an amazing Fretwork Picnic Basket! This Steve Good Design uses 1/4 inch material and would be a great item to make to hold some fruit or candy! This project really shows off that a scroll saw can make some beautiful 3d objects! Hope you all like the video! #ArtisanPirate

  15. Made myself a stand for my scrollsaw so I can cut outside. It is on castors (2 that can lock) so easy to move around and also I made a 10 degrees incline so it is nice and comfy to use, added a drawer for my blades and what not, so it is real nice to just open the garage door and enjoy the nice weather

  18. For the life of me, I cannot understand the pettiness of some of the border folks at the US/Canada border. And I mean on BOTH sides. Even with all the drug traffic, we have less hassles going in and out of Mexico.

  19. Norm, You could try ordering from Garnet Hall at Sawbird. https://www.sawbird.com/scroll_saw_blades.htm Also a fellow SK person. Unless you are only using Pegas blades.

  22. Well, I've been selecting the slabs with the most holes because of the non scrolling projects I use it for. Like to use colored epoxy and stones. But, the yard where I buy it has a lot of better slabs, too. The guy is pretty accommodating and would cut what's needed. Might even be able to get some cut at 1/4. But, I can always re saw.

  23. Gene, I have not tried scrolling a mesquite panel thicker than 1/4". It is sufficiently strong at that thickness. I usually glue together a couple of pieces to get a panel wide enough for my patterns in order to work around the worst of the flaws. Thurman

  25. A funny thing happened this past week. We have 3 great grandkids born within a couple of months apart. 2 boys and one girl. The little girl had the first party last Saturday and after the party she watched my wife wrapping presents for the next boy to have his party. My wife was wrapping the red car I posted and when the little girl saw it, asked if it was for her. She really wanted it and at the little cousins birthday she played with the little car again. My wife convinced me to make her one also and I will be mailing hers tomorrow. I painted hers blue. Dick heppnerguy

    Fiona Kingdon WIP

Work in progress, Fiona Kingdon's "Any Port In The Storm" pattern from the spring SSWWC magazine. Always wanted to cut one of hers! FD 2/0 blades, VERY slow speed, 3/16 ply. Got the last layer on the saw as we speak. Very thin, fragile piece, there's no zipping from one cut to the next. This one you DEFINITELY want to plan ahead so that every spot ends with you cutting along a section of wood that's adjacent to an uncut area, for stability. I had one spot snap because I wasn't paying attention to the direction I started the cut, just went my normal counter-clockwise and ended up having it break on me. Two others cracked as I was removing the pattern but were fixable with a little wood glue. This one took a while to cut......I'd guestimate about 15 hours or so, because I wasn't rushing anything and temperatures have dropped down into the single digits and even with two heaters going, the fan blowing sawdust out of the way just made my fingers start hurting. So, basically....it was an awesome time!

  30. That's cool! I told my wife, Connie, yesterday that while I know I'll miss my grandchildren being little when they grow up, like your Liam, at least I'll know we enjoyed every minute we could while they were little. I'm fortunate to live close to all of mine and see them almost daily. We're so blessed where it really counts.

  37. I got this off of Etsy. Six wheeled animals in the plans. This is a recent set I cut out. Not sure if these are too simple for a 3-year-old, but the 2-year-old my wife babysits for loves them. I made a set for my grandson (but he's too young right now), and I have been making more to give as gifts to people who are just having kids.

Huge Fiona fan here, and I have all her available patterns, except for one tree one.... My last 4 finished projects have been her patterns and the one on my saw now is hers... I am anxious to follow your progress on this one... You are being very brave using that thin of wood.... I would not attempt it....But, so far I haven't found the wood I want to use... It will be 3/8" or 1/2"... Please keep the progress reports/pictures coming... Looking mighty good so far.

    Photos of your work

When I take photos for my Etsy site, I use a a light box. I have several different colored back drops. I also have a very nice Canon digital camera with a tripod. Then I would have to download the photos to my iPad, then edit them. I found out that my IPhone takes just as good pictures as my expense camera. So, anymore, I just use my phone to take photos. They automatically upload from my phone to my iPad. If they need editing, I use the IOS photo editor. If I’m taking pictures of equipment, tools or jigs to show on the forum, I just use the phone, just the shop lites and post it. Please continue to show your work. I do appreciate great photography, but it’s not necessary to post here. Most here are hobbyists and don’t do this to make money. Do the best you can. We won’t judge you by the quality of your photography skills!
