The timing on seeing this is great. I've been helping a friend build a 15'x25' deck the past couple of weeks and a few times ended the day at the work site counting my fingers up to ten and then saying to my friend - "It's been a good day".6 points

Happy 55th Gnome
danny and 4 others reacted to don in brooklin on for a topic
Today is our 55th Wedding Anniversary. I didn't have a chance to get a card so when Steve Good showed his "DAD" gnome yesterday I modified to Love you and used the back for the message. A reduced in size and had to make a few modifications on the go as the hands covered the e completely. All done in less than a day.5 points -

It seems when I get really close to something that is delicate, I blink. So it happened once again, and then I am down on my hands and knees in the sawdust looking for my leaf, which I luckily found. So CA glue to the rescue, but it is so tiny I have to use a tweezer and when I pick it up it pops out of the tweezer and flys across the room! I luckily find it again, but this time I didn't use a tweezer and the leaf gets stuck to my finger! Arrgh! Does this happen to anyone else or just me? Does it get less frequent (blinking) as you get better? Any tips? I will hopefully show you my trees soon and hope that they won't be snags by the time I get them done! Thanks for your suggestions ahead of time...mariec2 points

A puzzle box with a twist; there's a magnet in the bottom of the hole for the pin, with panel nails in the pin to hold against the magnet. And you need a magic wand to open it. The pin was originally a standard heart, I flattened the heart so I could cut the pin in the shape of a key. Wood: 1 1/2 X 1 1/2 inch oak Blades: FD Polar #1 for the pin and sliding dovetail, Polar #5 for the inside void, the outside of the heart shape and to rip the 1/8" bottom. The only tricky part of the puzzle box is the order of cutting must be followed. 1. rip the bottom piece, 2. cut the pin, etc...2 points

A tiny dot of CA glue on each upper eyelid should help.2 points

Neil Diamond's song, Play Me, came on the radio the other day and it inspired this cutting. After reading some other opinions and listening to it about a dozen times while cutting it, for me, it's about the relationship between him and his guitar and maybe sometimes music as a whole. If you disagree, you're right too. I'll add the pattern to the library.1 point

I've been a scroller for 38 years. I've had plenty of minor cuts, but you would have to be really dedicated to lose a finger on a scrollsaw, lol1 point

Ray, if you get a minute, could you take a picture of your slide in/out boxes...are they on the floor or just under the saw table?1 point

Arrgh! I blinked again and lost another leaf
barb.j.enders reacted to OCtoolguy for a topic
On my Excalibur saws, the sawdust that doesn't get caught up by the dust control will filter down onto my lap or shoes. So, I made a couple of slide in/slide out boxes and they catch what dust makes it through. That's where all the tiny pieces also go if they don't get sucked up. So far I've had good luck with finding them. If they do get sucked up, well, that's called "creative license".1 point -

He's my mascot. Whenever I am confused over a post or don't have an answer, I rely on him to reply. I've kept that board because of its unique grain. Love it!1 point

Blades for scroll saw

Flying dutchman and Pegas mainly -- I have used Olson and they aren't terrible. Anything is better than the ones that come with the saw. LOL1 point -

DW 788 and others work hold down
OCtoolguy reacted to James E. Welch for a topic
Years ago I had a craftsman scrollsaw and I flipped the hold down upside down and out of the way, leaving it in case I needed it someday. There is sat until I wore the saw out and in the trash it went with the saw, still in the flipped over position. Now I just remove them before ever turning the saw on.1 point -
Another Dust Collection question - sorry
OCtoolguy reacted to James E. Welch for a topic
I didn't take a picture of it, but I have a king industrial 16" that I designed and 3d printed a better option that bolts to the existing holes. I'm assuming that it would work on excaliburs and other similar saws. When I get home maybe I can remember to snap a picture of it. I thought about adding it to my etsy shop so folks could order it, I'd list it at a price to just cover my plastic and shipping costs if I did.1 point -

Actually you can find poplar with light purple/lavender streaks. I ran across several boards at my local lumber yard a year ago and they now sit in my shop. Never hurts to dig thru the poplar pile.1 point

If you set your Wixey on the table and press the on/off button it will reset to Zero. They have always done that. The newer version has another bubble level that is always calibrated to 0 degrees. I have two saws a Hawk G4 that tilts the table and a EX-16 with tilting arm. On the EX I put the gauge on the arm. A tip Every once in awhile I come across one of the metal strip in the road that comes off of the street sweeper brushes, it fits perfectly in y clamps and allows me to put the wixey on it. It is wider and flatter than a blade.1 point

Charley, couldn’t you use the magnets on the bottom of the Wiley to align on the blade to zero it? Then if the table is @ 90 you know it’s perpendicular to the blade.1 point

Outdoors - Scroll Saw Challenge

I have worked with purpleheart and found that it's color did not remain the same as it aged. It was tough wood to work with as well. If I wanted wood with a reliably purple color, I would go with a wood dye and experiment with the wood used, but would probably go with Birch or Beech and finish cutting each piece before dying. Use the scraps from cutting for experimenting with soak time, etc. Charley1 point

Gene Howe reacted to Bill WIlson for a topic
Blinking? I never thought much about it. Although, now that you have brought it to my attention, I'm sure it will find a place in my consciousness. So thanks for that. As for dropping tiny bits on the floor, that happens all too often. The only difference is that I rarely find what I dropped. There must be some metaphysical connection with the clothes dryer and all of these lost bits & pieces have joined with the missing socks, in some Bermuda triangle like alternate existence.1 point -

I love making smiles and I'm still smiling thinking about this and want to incorporate the idea to use in grocery stores. When I'm in my scooter I tell people that pass me in the isle NO PASSING!!! Always brings a smile! Or if there in a scooter I tell them no speeding there's a cop in isle 3! But religious gifts bring a tear to them like GOD WILL PROVIDE, TRUST IN THE LORD,KEEP THE FAITH,GOD IS GOOD etc.1 point
