    Age test

Age test: who remember this item or even use it now? One of my customers from Germany asked me to make such pattern. Firstly I tried to make original size I wanted to make it realistic, but it came out very fragile and impossible to cut. I had to removed some details but it was look too simple. So I increesed pattern twise (pattern size is 8 x 5 inches) and here is final variant. I know that it looks like 3D cutting or with carving elements, but pattern is simpler than it appears, it is just glued layers without floating elements (one layer - one piece) Pattern at https://www.etsy.com/shop/AlexFoxUA

  7. Penny was tossing her old CPAP air hose (time to change it out---part of routine care). Very flexible and durable, and not big and bulky, she said "Don would this maybe work for dust collection on our scroll saws?". I'm going to work on this idea. The hose has soft rubber joints that can be adapted to a few solid fittings. Penny and I are repurposers through and through. Just wanted to share my beloved Penny's inspiration. Don.

    Fun new project.

I saw a magnetic chess set similar to this on Esty so I thought I would give it a shot. The second picture is the back side showing how I put the magnets in the board. I should have cleaned up my bench before I took the picture. I used CA glue to glue the 1/4" magnets on the back of the chess pieces.

I just finished this monster. Boy it took a long time to cut and to make the pattern. I like how it turned out, though.

    A new request

Several years ago a person contacted my with a request to make this same intarsia project for her to give to her church pastor who was retiring. All she had was a photo of it and had no idea where I might find the pattern to purchase one. I could not locate the maker of the pattern so I ended up using Inkscape to make one. I was fairly new at scroll saw projects but gave it a go and was able to get the project done. It came our fairly well and all were happy with it. I never attempted to make another but I had taken a photo of it for a memory of some of the things I have made through my new hobby. 3 days ago a local friend came to my house to ask me to make a cross for another local friend. I showed his some of my crosses and he choose the one he wanted for her. I happen to remember a few photos I had laying on a shelf of earlier projects and showed them to him, just because they were of some of my first ever projects. He ran across this one and changed his mind and ask if I would make it instead of the cross. I said I was willing to give it a try but I did not know if I could still find the pattern I made but I had the photo so I figured if I could not find the previous pattern I would make another. So I was able to find the pattern but it was really small. I was able to adjust it to the size I was after and here are the results. Dick heppnerguy

  11. Just for safety reasons I put my blades in upside down and facing the back of the saw so it's harder for me to lose a finger, .. safest way to use a scroll saw.. burns through the wood quite a lot slower but they always say if you're rushing that's when you get careless and get hurt. safety first...

  12. Here is my latest out door project I made for my granddaughter and her husband who just completed building a new home. I wanted something to give them that also happened to be their 20th anniversary too. I thought they might enjoy hanging it at their entrance way. Dick heppnerguy

  13. I did this one a while back. When leaving Jasper AB going west there is this very big “lake” not sure if you can call it that it was only about one foot deep ( haven’t been to Jasper for quite a while so not sure if it’s dried up). Anyway we saw a bear walking across the water and it looked like it was walking on water ( the kids called it the Jesus Bear). Even though this picture is a Grizzly walking on ice, it always reminds me of my favorite place on Earth, Jasper.

    Wedding Gift

Not sure where this should be posted, sorry if I put it in the wrong place. I just finished this 3 layer wedding gift for a very special customer. It is a great Sue Mey pattern that I made some modifications to, I put the cross on a base and personalized it for the bride and groom. The face piece is Sugar Maple and the back piece is Purple Heart, the styalized arms for the cross are Cherry. I put it on a base of Sapele and the names were cut from Cherry. Thanks Sue, for a great pattern. Thanks for looking. Rick

  20. Did you know that is you are using poly or other finishes that at thinned by MS or cleaned up with MS you can apply your finish while the MS is still wet from your pattern removal? I just blot the excess MS off with a paper towel first.

    Migrating Geese

This pattern is another wall stencil that I converted for use with a Scroll Saw. I felt the pattern needed to be as large as possible but, because I use precut project panels, my maximum is limited to 12 by 19 inches. This pattern is cut out of 5/32” x 10” x 19” solid core Maple Ply which is affixed to a 1/4” x 10” x 19” Hand Painted (assuming that is the correct term for using an Air Brush) backer. My only wish was that I would have been able to have the wood grain run horizontally, but, again, because I use precut panels, this was not possible. All easy cutting - estimated to be around 700 holes, I lost count - was done using Pegas #0 spiral blades. The backer was painted with Artist Acrylic Paints specifically intended for use with an Air Brush. A regular artist brush was only used to do the small amount of White under the Geese necks and a little touch up here and there as needed after the panels were assembled. And yes, the Yellow/Red - Sun/Moon (your choice) was painted on the surface of the cut panel. The panel was finished with multiple coats of Krylon Clear Spray Acrylic Protective Coating. And, once again, the panel is set into a typical 1 3/4” wide custom made, premium grade pine, frame I made that was finished with Minwax Poly-Shade Mission Oak. For anyone interested, I used this project to document the steps I took to paint the backer, in this case, using an Air Brush. You can read my post in the Learning Center/ Works In Progress and Tutorials: Painting an Art Panel Backer with an Air Brush I will post this pattern in Pattern Central/Pattern Exchange for anyone who might like to have it. As always, comments and critique welcome.

  28. Today is our 55th Wedding Anniversary. I didn't have a chance to get a card so when Steve Good showed his "DAD" gnome yesterday I modified to Love you and used the back for the message. A reduced in size and had to make a few modifications on the go as the hands covered the e completely. All done in less than a day.

  34. I have had the same idea. Coating the wood with dewaxed shellac should somewhat strengthen the bond between the wood fibers. I never tried it because using 3M77 to stick the pattern to the wood and removing it with mineral spirits eliminates the problem and simplifies the process. The only gotcha is that you must wait for the mineral spirits to evaporate. Even complicated patterns come off in one piece, and there is no damage to the wood. I used to use lots of blue tape but now I use so little that I may not live long enough to use what I have in stock.

  38. Since I also do wood carving by hand, I wear these when I have my gouges in hand. I would think that one could wear these when using the scroll saw if they are worried about cutting themselves. They are actually quite comfortable.

  39. That might work but also might not be usable for the desired finish after the project is done too. I've not had much of a problem with this ever since I started sanding the plywood down to a very smooth surface ( 320 grit ). I've also read that you can spray mineral spirits on to help loosen the glue, I have not tried that method yet but plan to one of these days. I have used a hair drier on heat setting and it loosens up the glue as well, if electric is an issue or your spouse doesn't allow you to touch the hair drier.. you can just set it out in the direct sunlight for an hour or so and it'll also loosen up the glue. Tip for those that might try the heating method... I've found that if you heat it up and then forget or wait too long and it cools down some... it's stuck even worse than before and will require more heat than you applied previously to get it to loosen up again. This brings me to this thought.. If you apply the pattern in cool weather and it takes you weeks / months / years / centuries to finish the project... this could need heat such as a bonfire to get that pattern off.. seriously though, I try to finish a project asap once the pattern has been applied, I don't like leaving that pattern on there any longer than I have too as the longer it's on there the more stuck it tends to get, and will likely need heat or maybe that mineral spirits to get it off there without damaging the project.

A few things I have cut recently. Like the heading says, nothing special. 40 boomerangs cut from 3mm Mdf and 40 Hugs cut from 3mm ply, all for a kindergarten The Lovers Tree cut from 5mm marine ply. Showing the rear because I damaged the from. Marg

  46. Just a quick segmentation project I am working on this weekend. I just did the first coat of paint. Need to sand, glue it up and add the gloss finish. Thought it looked pretty good in the loose dry fit stage. But this speaks outdoors to me. looking at a single flow brings me such joy seeing the handiwork in creation.

  47. Summer has always been about being outdoors, enjoying the sights, random encounters with interesting critters, and various activities such as hiking, geocaching, kayaking, archery, etc. Don't have any kayak-related scroll projects yet.

  48. These would be some of my favourite outdoor projects. I don't have a picture of just the "Welcome to the Lake" sign, but I had one hanging on the boat until this spring when hubby dropped it. Now I need to cut another one. The puzzle is one of the spots we like to get to and anchor at for a couple of days. This is on Lake of the Woods, ON.
