    Fun!

After some serious sewing projects for our boat, I finally got some time on the saw! 3/4 plywood of unknown woods. A gift from a friend. Used a #5mg blade. No finish on it yet. Actually, not sure what to use! Thoughts? I don't want to mess up the flexibility. 20230629_151731.mp4

  3. I found this B&W ‘High Noon Show Down’ image on-line and thought it would be a good Scroll Saw subject. I know there are few fans of Old West among the SVV members that might like it. I understand this is a scene from a movie/series of a while back of the same name. I never watched it. The conversion consisted of no more than resizing and inverting the image, so the cutout areas were red lines with grey fill. Added a few bridges to the pattern and I also found that I needed a few more bridges during cutting. I didn’t count, but there were a lot of holes. All cutting was done with Pegas #2/0 Spiral blades, except I used a Pegas #1 MGT R for the long straight cuts along the narrow 1/4” wide edges (under the frame rabbet). The cut panel is 5/32” x 11 x 14” solid core Walnut ply that was darkened with Minwax Dark Walnut stain. The cut panel was affixed to a 1/4” x 11” x 14” solid core Maple Ply backer that was left natural. This project is “Old School” - two tone wood, and it took a lot of will power on my part not to try and add color. The assembled panel was finished with multiple coats of Clear Gloss Spray Lacquer. The Frame is 1 3/4” wide Premium Pine rails sealed with non-wax containing Shellac, stained with Minwax Honey Maple Gel-Stain, and finished with two coats of Clear Minwax Satin Wipe-on Poly. Since I have been using Acrylic Paints and Polycrylic finishes recently, I almost forgot how long oil stain and Poly takes to dry - seems like forever. Comments and critiques always welcome. I’ll post the pattern in Pattern Exchange.

  6. Sasho contributed the pattern for this to our library about a year ago. To me, it's both sad and happy at the same it. I immediately cut it, but only this week got around to framing 'Life' and it now hangs over my desk. The foreground, the background, and the frame are all quarter-sawn white oak.

I have a big garbage bin in the shop, I just spray over that. All the over spray is now in the garbage.

I made a pull out drawer that is under the workbench top. The drawer has some hardware cloth with 1/2 x 1/2 inch mesh stapled on the open top of the drawer. All overspray goes into the bottom of the drawer. just pull out to spray and close it when done. It was made from scrap wood. No slides just a couple of boards shaped like an "L" the the drawer rests and slides on. Not good looking but it has been there for years

  9. @Tomanydogs that is a great piece. Must have been very difficult to cut, no like cutting on a flat board.

  10. Irene, that is amazing! Very nice cutting. What blade(s) did you use? How in the world did you manage to hold it down flat to the table?

    Fun!

It is a Steve Good pattern - floppy wood. I mounted it on the square of plywood. They stand on their own, not sure though when waving! Might have to try the green. Thanks.

  14. This is what I use. Having one near the miter saw, table saw, scroll saw, etc. and getting comfortable with it will save you from a lot of accidents and near misses. Wow! I love how you have depth to the picture. Very well done! How do you turn out pictures so fast anyway? Takes me forever.

    Blades breaking

Are you using spiral blades or flat / straight blades.. I've broke spirals before but I don't really recall ever breaking a flat blade.. I'd say tension is the issue if you're talking about a real small blade but you mentioned a #2. Did you mean 2/0? I'm asking specifics because any #2 blade shouldn't break very easy and especially when just applying tension. The only time I did break some blades of this size was due to a bad batch of blades slipping past quality control.. a note to my supplier turned out to be a known issue with many complaints and replacement blades were mailed to me.. SO with that said it can be a blade quality issue and nothing to do with the saw or its user.. I have seen this with both Flying Dutchman and Pegas blades from time to time over the 20 ish years I've been scrolling..

I also use newspaper. For those under the age of 40, newspapers are what your ancestors used to line bird cages with.

My latest cut is a Russ Beard pattern, this has been soaked in Danish Oil, it has to be detailed. This is going to be the Centre piece, there will be animals in front of him and behind him. This is going to be a big 3D project once completed which I estimate is about two to three months away. I’m in no rush and take my time. Cut using 4mm Baltic Birch Ply, the complete pattern was cut with #1 Flying Dutchman Blades

  20. This doesn't have much scroll saw work and so I did post this in 'Other Works" but I did the top window, door and doorway of this and also the "balcony" using my scroll saw but that is about it...but it is definitely outdoors

    A new request

Several years ago a person contacted my with a request to make this same intarsia project for her to give to her church pastor who was retiring. All she had was a photo of it and had no idea where I might find the pattern to purchase one. I could not locate the maker of the pattern so I ended up using Inkscape to make one. I was fairly new at scroll saw projects but gave it a go and was able to get the project done. It came our fairly well and all were happy with it. I never attempted to make another but I had taken a photo of it for a memory of some of the things I have made through my new hobby. 3 days ago a local friend came to my house to ask me to make a cross for another local friend. I showed his some of my crosses and he choose the one he wanted for her. I happen to remember a few photos I had laying on a shelf of earlier projects and showed them to him, just because they were of some of my first ever projects. He ran across this one and changed his mind and ask if I would make it instead of the cross. I said I was willing to give it a try but I did not know if I could still find the pattern I made but I had the photo so I figured if I could not find the previous pattern I would make another. So I was able to find the pattern but it was really small. I was able to adjust it to the size I was after and here are the results. Dick heppnerguy

  24. Here is my latest out door project I made for my granddaughter and her husband who just completed building a new home. I wanted something to give them that also happened to be their 20th anniversary too. I thought they might enjoy hanging it at their entrance way. Dick heppnerguy

    Cross for my wife

Thank you so much for the wonderful compliments. I appreciate your considerations of my scroll work but I can not share them as I see the unbelievable work others produce and I can only be satisfied that I choose this hobby to pursue as it does bring me a lot of job to understand that I too can do it and I will never achieve the level of skill of so many other scroller but I can always enjoy trying.
