    Another Plane-Mosquito

I thought it was time to try another plane. The British Mosquito since it was made mostly out of wood. Interesting tidbit. General Hap Arnold was in England looking at production of the Mosquito days prior to Pearl Harbor and was very interested and recommended it to the Army Air Corp. The P-38 was already in production and decided it could do the job. The Mosquito became a very successful high speed medium bomber and night fighter because it was hard to detect by radar. It helped it also had 2 Merlin engines. I cut this plaque on 1/4 BBPW (ran out of 1/8" stock) 3/16 backer, shellac and lacquer finish. Original print was on 8.5 x 11 but took it to copy store for a slight enlargement. A-1 paper may be large enough. The greyed out areas are for bridges that can be painted later.

  2. Cut is from 1/2" Red Oak. The original design calls for 14" x 8" but I had a nice 24" board I wanted to use and being cheap, decided to reduce the pattern to get two. Not the smartest move I have ever made. The fine print letters would be hard enough at full size. The smaller size made that worse. LOL

  3. Old red oak barn wood, base and cat tail turned, the rest cut on the scroll saw, some edges rounded with a router, burned with a propane torch and scrubbed with a wire brush, then assembled.

    Slow going

Just finishing the cuts in 3/4+ red oak abstract nativity scene. Using a #7 niqua Ultra. Originally, started with a #9 Pegus. For some reason, none of my stock of 9s wanted to cooperate. They were even slower than the 7s and much harder to keep to the line for this novice.

    cutting shell

An update a long time coming. I tried cutting shell several different ways, and my best luck was with a dremel and diamond bit, but still not great. I have been able to shape shell with a sanding disc. that hooks to the flex shaft on my old scroll saw. This is a refrigerator magnet made from yellow pine, turned on the lathe, burned with a propane torch and then scrubbed with a wire brush, and bits of broken sea sell collected at the beach. The shell was shaped with the sanding disc. I have since made some full size fish as wall decorations.

    little box i made

we had to put my girlfriends dog down a week ago today. Dazzle was a survivor of the thailand dog meat trade and lived at a rescue we both volunteered at. Daz had to have a mast cell tumor removed 17 months ago . my GF took her home for the healing period. she wouldnt let daz go back. my girlfriends nicknames for daz were "puddin butt" and "weirdo." she was such a goofy dog and lived the last 17 months of her life being loved tremendously. the "weirdo" is upside down and off center on purpose because...welp... WEIRDO!! LOLOL i thought a keepsake box of some things of dazzles that are precious to my girlfriend might be nice

    cutting shell

I have an idea for cutting a clam/mollusk shell to look like a sail boat. Does any one have any experience trying to cut shell? what blades? slow or fast? any suggestions?,

Well it will be finished when the finish dries. I met a young man a few months ago, that was a Navy Submariner. First submarine person I have ever met. I made him a military plaque and added the submariner emblem to it. Anxious to give it to him.

Scrappile, looks great. I like the sub emblem. I completed the all the branches of service for an American Legion Post in GA. I even made one for the Space Command. They are a fun project.

As a qualified submariner on 637-class (and one 688, briefly) fast-attack submarines, I can assure you, sir, that THIS is a quality submarine pun. [[hoists beverage in salute]]

    cutting shell

Just an update. My first attempt with a ribbed molusk shell turned out terrible. Where the shell was ribbed thick, it was prone to chip. Where it was ribbed thin it sort of went ok. I attempted a piece of oyster shell, but it was far too brittle and flakey and disintegrated along the cut. Gonna try a piece of plain Quahog clam shell next.

    cutting shell

I have cut shell - but not with a scroll saw - they make a small hand fret saw and yes you use very fine jewelers ( and yes with a scrollsaw -but as slow as you can get - expect the blades to break easily ), design tacked down with adhesive spray . Pearl can burn very easy with a powered saw . cutting them by hand is not a difficult task in fact it was allot of fun ( have inlayed a few guitars in my time ) BUT THE DUST CAN BE VERY HARMFUL TO YOUR LUNGS - WEAR A MASK A GOOD MASK LIKE A N95 ( I always wear a mask when I scroll saw )

Yeah, thought about that and remembered the old delta scroll saw I paid $2 for at a yard sale. It still works.

    cutting shell

Diamond impregnated wire, but it will require cooling. The grit will get into everything and I would not do it on my scroll saw.

    cutting shell

I also have never tried or thought about it. Using a jewelers blade does make sense though. I would also be careful about blade speed with it ..

    cutting shell

Jewelers must be able to cut it, since mother of pearl is used in jewelry, also pen making and used to be made into buttons. I would try to research how those guys do it. I would think a jeweler's blade would cut it. Tom

I for one have never given that a thought before. Will be interested in hearing and seeing what you do with this. It could end up being a learning lesson for many here, who knows? Dick heppnerguy
