My latest creation. Got the pattern on etsy. Not finished yet. I still need to attach it to the backer and maybe do a frame.

  2. Seems like all I am making lately are memorial items for friends and family. A good friend up in Kentucky Mom passed away recently. We had trip planned to go North with Kentucky being one of the stops. I saw barbs "Wings" plaque and thought that it would be nice for her. Made from 5/8'' Maple with 1/8" BBply for the backer. Used my go to blade FD UR1. The first pic was when it was laying out to dry, second pic was hanging on my shop wall,, pics didn't turn out well. I swear I spend more time finding the correct placement for patterns than cutting! I was trying to get the birds flying into that "light", ( the lighter spots of grain)

Here's something I just finished for my Granddaughter. Gramps (Paul) was good enough to do the pattern for me. I stacked cut3 of them with 1/8 B/B ply using a #3UR blade. Just going to give it a couple more coats of poly. The knives were a little tricky to do but I gave it my best shot.

  8. Hi all. Let's remember that this scroll saw challenge is all about celebrating creativity and craftsmanship, not about policing each other's interpretations of heroes. The theme 'Heroes' is intentionally open-ended to allow for a diverse range of projects that reflect what heroism means to each of us. Some may find inspiration in comic book and movie superheroes, and that's absolutely valid. These characters can represent symbols of strength, courage, and hope. On the other hand, many of us also admire and appreciate everyday heroes who make a real difference in our lives – be it nurses, firefighters, military personnel, or anyone else who selflessly serves their community. By showcasing our projects, we're not discounting the importance of one type of hero over another. Instead, we're taking the opportunity to share our passion for scroll saw work and honor the heroes who resonate with us personally. So, let's keep the spirit of this challenge positive and inclusive. Let's celebrate the diversity of interpretations and the skill that goes into making these projects. Happy scrolling, and let the creative heroics continue!

    In Honor of:

Some of my greatest memories from when young, were the time spent Jack Rabbit hunting. Walking through miles of sagebrush, cheatgrass and around cactus. Driving my Dad's old jeep through the same with buddies on the front fenders, and on the roof, hunting Jack Rabbits. My Favorite of all my hunting experiences. This place was over run with them.. Then the farms moved in and the farmer did not appreciate feeding their crops to the Jack Rabbits. So they started poisoning them. Now days I get more excited seeing a Jack Rabbit than I do a deer, fox, coyote, or wild turkey. They are almost all gone. So when I received my Woodworker's Pattern Book by Jacob and Wayne Fowler, and saw this pattern of a Jack Rabbit, I stopped all other projects and cut it. My memorial to Mr and Misses Jack Rabbit. "Thanks For The Memories" Cut in Monkey Pod. Added a little of a dramatic background for affect.

    Walnut Spoon

Here is a piece I just finished. More sanding to shape than carving, just playing with different techniques. The only carving was the bowl. I included a couple of photos of the slab of 3/4" dark walnut I cut it out from. You can also see the amount of shaping and sanding I did in the last image.

  12. My wife and I watched the series, WEDNESDAY, on Netflix mostly to have something to watch with our 19 year old daughter. We actually really enjoyed it. I moved her in next to Herman Munster. I used black duck cloth attached to plywood as a backer since Wednesday looks good in black. I'll add the pattern, without the text, to the library. I bought the text file on Etsy.

  13. I'd say bring out the solid walnut.. That looks great to me. How do you feel about it? That is the most important critic.

  14. OK, so I did another project, this time I tried to implement many of the suggestions that were given to me. Mainly, I slowed both the speed and myself down and I changed blades often (just ordered another group of blades. Please comment again, they are truly welcome. This time I used walnut ply, did not find solid walnut, yet.

Still enjoying your patterns. Because I am not a fantasy fan or television watcher, I really am not at all familiar with the actress or the series but I still enjoy your pattern making ability and work Dick heppnerguy

  19. The blue certainly pops and will get more attention at the first viewing. However I think that a pleasantly coordinated tan or wood-tone or perhaps even gold will be more elegant and will be enjoyed long after the interest in the blue has expired.

Thank you! Yes, I remember the dance from the show. I remember thinking it fit her character perfectly. They have announced there will be a season 2. I really did enjoy the first one so I'm excited.

Charlie, excellent work! I saw her crazy dance a few months back...it would be fun to try to do that dance...I know a whole bunch of folks have copied her dance. If you haven't seen it, be sure to Google it.

  26. That was what I discovered not long after getting in scroll sawing. I found it taking for . . . . ever to finish a cut - trying to get the most out of the blade. When I compared the blade cost to time spent cutting out a pattern, I started using more blades and enjoying the scroll sawing more.

  27. Like the mag idea might have to try that. Good start at scrolling, like the others say the wood looks like MDF not the best of woods to use. It maybe better with a finer blade #1 or #2 maybe

    Trivet #2 of 8

Trivet #2 of 8 patterns by Sue Mey. I used 1/2" Walnut approximately 8" square. Cut on the Pegas Scroll Saw using Pegas #3 MGT blades. A light sanding with the Sand Flee and Mac Mop then dipped in diluted Shellac. One coat spray Lacquer Clear Satin. Comments welcome.

    Trivet #2 of 8

Sure if you think anyone would be interested. Here is where I am so far. 1. Get some polymer clay. It is not modeling clay which does not harden. I used several brands like FIMO. Bottom left corner it says something like 230 degrees 20 minutes. Must be the hardening stuff. Many colors “Michaels” has it on sale at less than 1/3 runs about $2-7 2. Knead the clay till it is workable. Might try some softener that makes it easier to knead. Rather stiff stuff 3. I got a kit from Amazon that had a roller, knives, and stylus for a few bucks. 4. Push clay into the holes and pack it tight. I found that applying a backer board at this step makes it easier ‘cause the clay oozes out the back and it becomes a push and shove contest. 5. Leave some clay proud of the surface. If you have the sharp knife cut the clay even on the front surface. 6. Bake in an oven or as in my case in my Air Fryer at 230 F for 20 minutes for 1/4 inch thick 7. Sand and finish I have used polyurethane and or lacquer still working that out. 8. Longevity and wearability still in the I don’t know stage.

  32. I came up with a way to hold my blades that are next in line on my hegner. As a bonus they hold your blade in place while you're tightening the clamp too. Note - The picture isn't necessarily where I intend on leaving the blade holders but just to show that they are magnetic.

  33. I have the same WEN belt/ Disc Sander! I also have the 20x1 inch belt/ Disc sander. I mainly use it for stropping my carving tools. But it is quick to change belts, so I use it for my smaller pieces, and it is right by my carving station. We need to come up with a better top vac too. I was thinking of something that sort of wraps around the blade area in a horseshoe shape. Still working it out in my mind, as it needs to adjust to the thickness of the wood.

    Hi ya.

Welcome back. Acrylic paint, applied directly on BB ply will raise the grain and leave a pretty rough surface, so prepping with a sanding sealer or even a coat of shellac will help achieve a smoother finish. It might take an extra coat or two of the paint to get good coverage, but it will be worth it.

  36. My box fan with a furnace filter does way better than my ceiling mounted air filtration system.. putting it on the floor about 2 - 3 foot from the saw on the side that the air puffer blows the dust towards seems to pull a lot of the dust "down" toward the ground instead of sucking it up to the ceiling and hopefully getting into the filtration system. I also do have the Seyco scroll saw dust collector..it seems to work pretty decent. but the box fan is quieter than any of them and also moves more air.
