Just want to thank everyone for input. Thanks to Charley L for all his suggestions. Thanks to Denny at Art Crafters Online for his suggestions and for meeting and discussing scroll sawing at his shop. As a side note, if your in the Dayton TN area stop in and see Denny Great person. Also we pickup some sweet corn in Dayton. Best we have ever eaten. As others have mentioned, taking your time is critical and using the right blade for you. Found out that everyone uses a different blade and what works for you is the best. For me I have found the Pegas #4 Super Skip to work for me in multiple materials. I have cut Poplar, Walnut, Cedar, Mahogany, Oak, Pine and Cherry with good results. I will use a home made clamp when cutting the second cut. I try to cut inside the material so there are no cuts to the outside. Make sure material is square. I have also cut the birds out of Purple Heart, Poplar, Cedar, Walnut, Pine, Bubinga, Padauk. Had some pen blanks that I cut them from. Really enjoy the 3D cutting. Jim3 points

Memorial plaque for a friends Mother
Scrolling Steve and one other reacted to flarud for a topic
Seems like all I am making lately are memorial items for friends and family. A good friend up in Kentucky Mom passed away recently. We had trip planned to go North with Kentucky being one of the stops. I saw barbs "Wings" plaque and thought that it would be nice for her. Made from 5/8'' Maple with 1/8" BBply for the backer. Used my go to blade FD UR1. The first pic was when it was laying out to dry, second pic was hanging on my shop wall,, pics didn't turn out well. I swear I spend more time finding the correct placement for patterns than cutting! I was trying to get the birds flying into that "light", ( the lighter spots of grain)2 points -

OK, so I did another project, this time I tried to implement many of the suggestions that were given to me. Mainly, I slowed both the speed and myself down and I changed blades often (just ordered another group of blades. Please comment again, they are truly welcome. This time I used walnut ply, did not find solid walnut, yet.2 points

WEDNESDAY ADAMS
Alexander Fadeev reacted to Charlie E for a topic
My wife and I watched the series, WEDNESDAY, on Netflix mostly to have something to watch with our 19 year old daughter. We actually really enjoyed it. I moved her in next to Herman Munster. I used black duck cloth attached to plywood as a backer since Wednesday looks good in black. I'll add the pattern, without the text, to the library. I bought the text file on Etsy.1 point -

Rough out blade
tomsteve reacted to Roberta Moreton for a topic
I use a #5 skip tooth blade for most things. There is usually one in the saw.1 point -
Don't do it Often, but to nip the bottom of the blade a quarter inch and put it back in makes for almost a new blade. Danny1 point

Used about a million blades on the hegner unfortunately I'm finally starting to figure out the tension I think though. Maybe...1 point -
That was what I discovered not long after getting in scroll sawing. I found it taking for . . . . ever to finish a cut - trying to get the most out of the blade. When I compared the blade cost to time spent cutting out a pattern, I started using more blades and enjoying the scroll sawing more.1 point

When companies do not respond to my inquiries they do not get my business. If they have phone numbers and contact info they should be polite enough to respond, if they don't shows me they do not care.1 point

Eye protection during scrollsawing?
Norm Fengstad reacted to Wichman for a topic
It was the mid 80's when I started wearing prescription safety glasses, frames and lenses, and I never stopped. My eyesight is really bad uncorrected ( 20/500+) but 20/20 corrected. So, in order to see I have to be wearing safety glasses. Your eye irritation may be from the organic vapors released when you scroll. The current allergy tests only test for reaction to the pollen, not the OV. 3M makes a product that is a flat sheet with activated charcoal in the filter media, I have one on my box fan. Also you could try and OTC allergy medication. If the OTC works then discuss with your MD.1 point -
opinion on backer color wanted
Roberta Moreton reacted to Kris Martinson for a topic
Of those presented, I'd choose the blue. However, I'm not usually one for drawing attention to the colorful background, so I prefer to display my pictures with a black felt backing.1 point -
Lion project update
danny reacted to Insane Dust Maker for a topic
So here is the next cut for my “Lion Project” it had to be reduced quite a bit to fit into the greater plan. It was also not a free standing pattern I got Russ’s approval to modify the pattern to be free standing, have not done this before it was all free hand drawing on the pattern. Difficult cut due to the reduced size but when you see the whole project completed you will understand my insanity. Cut with a #1 Niqua straight pin less blade. Soaked in Danish Oil drained and excess wiped off. Ready now for detailing. At the end of the day very hay with the final result.1 point -

Thank you so much! My portraits usually go from my saw, to taking a picture, to hanging on my shop wall, so I truly appreciate these nice words from you and others! I get joy from making them, but I really love hearing that other people enjoy them too. One of my favorites that I cut before I began making patterns is your Eric Clapton pattern. I'm still impressed at how lifelike you made the pattern.1 point

For me, it’s easy. When the blade no longer cuts the way I want it too, it gets changed. It has nothing to do with time, or distance, if it isn’t cutting the way it was when it was new, I change it. Like was mentioned above, I have even changed a brand new blade because it did not cut the way it should. At the very least, I replace the blade before starting another project, I replace blades after each session, I replace the blade when the cut starts getting ragged, I replace the blade when it won’t track properly. This is why blades are sold in bulk…. Packages of 144 or a gross. I think once you start changing blades more often, your scrolling will become more enjoyable.1 point

If you are a beginner and don't know what the blade ping sounds like, this could be helpful.1 point

I have heard this too and tried it but didnt get better results than just cutting a quick line and seeing how well it goes. Too squigly and hard to control, add a bit more tension.1 point

For over sized patterns her is a video. the trick is to drill extra holes and to tape the back. https://youtu.be/qO00Z7hatK41 point -

Guitar tuner
danny reacted to Sycamore67 for a topic
Well,I had an interesting morning. I installed a frequency analyzed in my Samsung phone and used it to determine the frequency of how I tension blades. I put in a FD Polar#5 in my Hegner and tensioner it to my normal. I was not real happy with what I got so I found website that will play different keys on the piano. My blades are definitely not at middle C but more in the E or F range above middle C. Will I ever do this again no as it really does not help me.1 point -
