    Weekend Projects

I was able to tackle another of Jim Blume's Americana series, this being Americana 2, Grandpa's Boot. It's cut into 1/4-inch Maple stained with Minwax Natural and has a 1/4-inch Pine backer painted black. The frame is custom cut Pine and stained with Minwax Ipswich. I thought it was neat that the grain in the frame met at three of the corners. The other two welcome signs are from Steve Good and cut from 1/4-inch Maple with a Lauan backer painted black. The Maple was stained with Minwax Espresso. All the pieces have multiple coats of Polyacrylic with light sanding with 500 grit paper between coats. I have a craft show in August and it is to be at a dog training facility. I expect there will be a lot of dog lovers coming through... hence the dog welcome signs and other dog pieces I've made recently.

  3. Having fun cutting these birdhouses. Been using scrap material of what ever I have and cutoffs from the hardwood dealer. Have cut 50+ with at least the same waiting to be cut. I like the different colors in some Cedar pieces and the grain in the Cypress is nice. Even tried something different with the sock shaped one. Painting the birds different colors and cutting some from Purple Heart and other woods.

    Walnut Spoon

Here is a piece I just finished. More sanding to shape than carving, just playing with different techniques. The only carving was the bowl. I included a couple of photos of the slab of 3/4" dark walnut I cut it out from. You can also see the amount of shaping and sanding I did in the last image.

  5. My SIL sent me a picture of a case that one of her friends had with the quotation -- "Interesting". That is a hint hint. The one she showed me was done by a laser so I redesigned for the scroll saw. The sewing machine is from Steve Goods picture. Size is 3 3/4 by 2 3/4. 4 layers 1/8 BB. Swivels on magnets to open.

  6. Hey Everyone! In this scroll saw project video, we make a beautiful and elegant Fretwork Picture Frame in the style and fashion of King Louis XV! This project is made from 1/4 inch material and would be a great gift to hold a special photo for a wedding or anniversary. The project comes from the Big Book Of Scroll Saw Woodworking by Fox Chapel Publishing. Hope you all like the video! #ArtisanPirate

    Blades story

Nope, no debate, you made that clear for sure my friend. I was just saying that I had similar issues and observations. Remember Occum's Razor simply states that the simplest explanation is preferable to one that is more complex.

    Blades story

This weekend, I again tried the Pegas #3 modified Geometry blades on my two new spoons. Walnut (3/4") and Black Limba (1/2"). Switched to a #5 on the 3/4" Walnut. I had some issues with the blades getting caught and thus being pulled out of the chuck a few times, bent badly, but no breaky. Sanded the blades at the point of chuck contact, etc... Because I do not use clear contact paper when I will carve after, (vs all other times) I use a removable spray adhesive direct on the paper to the wood, so I lose some lubrication of the blade. I did turn my machine way down as I find the Pegas Modified Gemonitry to be fairly aggressive, but I have to admit sharp. Still, I favor the Flying Dutchman Ultra Reverse #5 as my go-to blade, but I think for me there is some utility in using the Pegas on some types of wood/projects. Like everything in the scroll saw the world, each person finds their own preferences and go-tos. There really is no wrong answer.

  11. 30 seconds in the microwave should see the hot glue ease off.

  12. I would use Sellotape but I have heard people use hot glue but it might be difficult to get apart. I use Sellotape over my patterns anyway.

  14. There are a number of ways, but the one I've settled on is to use hot glue. Works best if all the blanks are the same size. I clamp them with several spring clamps, making sure all the edges are even, then run beads of hot glue across the edges. This works best with smaller blanks. Once they get too large, then you may need to attach them in the middle someplace.

My latest creation. Got the pattern on etsy. Not finished yet. I still need to attach it to the backer and maybe do a frame.

  18. I usually watch your videos and always learn something. I have seen this pattern before and although there is a picture of it, I really don't know how it will look. I have an issue visualizing how it will look. Your videos show me how it will look. Now I have to try it, DANG. Jerry PS I like the picture you put in it.

  20. Nails, tape, and glue are the ones I have tried. I like glue. I put a small drop of wood glue in the waste area and clamp it for about 20 minutes. It is cheap and never moves. Be sure to cut the waste off last. Try these.

    Walnut Spoon

Wonderful Spoon! You have inspired me...I think I am going to make one with a really long handle so when I make my raspberry, apricot or peach jam the steam won't burn my hands. I will try to make mine fancy like yours. Excellent spoon.

  27. Just want to thank everyone for input. Thanks to Charley L for all his suggestions. Thanks to Denny at Art Crafters Online for his suggestions and for meeting and discussing scroll sawing at his shop. As a side note, if your in the Dayton TN area stop in and see Denny Great person. Also we pickup some sweet corn in Dayton. Best we have ever eaten. As others have mentioned, taking your time is critical and using the right blade for you. Found out that everyone uses a different blade and what works for you is the best. For me I have found the Pegas #4 Super Skip to work for me in multiple materials. I have cut Poplar, Walnut, Cedar, Mahogany, Oak, Pine and Cherry with good results. I will use a home made clamp when cutting the second cut. I try to cut inside the material so there are no cuts to the outside. Make sure material is square. I have also cut the birds out of Purple Heart, Poplar, Cedar, Walnut, Pine, Bubinga, Padauk. Had some pen blanks that I cut them from. Really enjoy the 3D cutting. Jim

  35. Hi all. Let's remember that this scroll saw challenge is all about celebrating creativity and craftsmanship, not about policing each other's interpretations of heroes. The theme 'Heroes' is intentionally open-ended to allow for a diverse range of projects that reflect what heroism means to each of us. Some may find inspiration in comic book and movie superheroes, and that's absolutely valid. These characters can represent symbols of strength, courage, and hope. On the other hand, many of us also admire and appreciate everyday heroes who make a real difference in our lives – be it nurses, firefighters, military personnel, or anyone else who selflessly serves their community. By showcasing our projects, we're not discounting the importance of one type of hero over another. Instead, we're taking the opportunity to share our passion for scroll saw work and honor the heroes who resonate with us personally. So, let's keep the spirit of this challenge positive and inclusive. Let's celebrate the diversity of interpretations and the skill that goes into making these projects. Happy scrolling, and let the creative heroics continue!

  36. I looked at many of my project pictures and thought about what heroes means to me. The Corsair was flown by World War 2 heroes. This project was donated to a local veterans support group for a silent auction fundraiser. The eagle picture was made as a father's day gift for my hero, my dad.

  40. I am playing around with different designs of Welsh Love Spoons, James got me started when I saw his, and now I am just going nuts! I really like the cedar as it is really nice to cut and carve. And of course the smell. These are about 11" in length. The 2nd image I just cut out using spalted maple. (The backside is in the 3rd image) I had some Pegas skip tooth blades I wanted to test, I used 3 blades for the maple one. I saw a piece and just hand-drew this pattern. The penciled-in areas will be where I do the over-under/deep carving. I am going to try a rough carve and finish, sort of the 'Ol Rugged Cross thing. I had some scrap walnut and did a smaller pattern (two blades), you can see the backside in the 3rd image. I am not too keen on the Pegas skip tooth blades. They seem like a faster cut, but I do not like how the cut edges come out. The FD Ultra Reverse finish is so much better, and I have better control. Perhaps the Pegas lasts a little longer though. I figure with a couple of pieces already cut out, I can then sit down and do all my carving, shaping, sanding, and finishing at once. I really like making these Welsh love spoons. Now I have 3 pieces to carve and finish.
