  1. It has been over 110 up to 117 degrees here in Southern Arizona and way too hot for my liking in the shop so I have not worked out in it for over a month. I had this project started but never got back to it until this week when I decided to buck up and get it done. So here is my little project completed. I decided to try some carving with it, as usually I just cut and shape this kind of projects. I hope to make more efforts with this method and improve a lot as I go. Dick heppnerguy

    Pelican Puzzle

I finished it this weekend. A Pelican puzzle pattern by Harvey Blyer. I used 3/4" Poplar approximately 6" x 8". Cut on the Pegas Scroll Saw using Pegas #3 MGT blades. After a light sanding with a Mac Mop, dipped in diluted Shellac and another light sanding. Comments welcome.

  7. If I had the floor space, I might have kept it. It took about three weeks to sell on the Facebook marketplace, and I let it go for $100.00 with some blades and spare parts. I bought it several years ago, covered with dust and sitting in the back of a barn. I spent well over $100 refurbishing it, and it was my go-to saw for a long time until I purchased a used Excalibur EX-21. It didn't take long before the Hawk was collecting dust. I gave away my old AMT 16-inch saw to a friend, and the Hawk became my backup saw. My EX-21 is my backup, and a Pegas saw is my primary. While I had my AMT, EX-21, and Hawk scroll saws sitting next to each other, I experimented. I cut the pattern using the same wood and blade type on all three saws. There was very little difference in the way they cut. Surprisingly, the AMT saw produced a smoother cut than the other two. For me, blade changes trumped everything, so the EX-21 was the winner. The AMT had to go, and I began a search for another use, EX-21. By this time, they didn't make new EX-21 saws anymore, and no one was selling used ones anywhere within a day's drive. They started making them in China, but these seemed to be junk. After over two years of watching for a used saw, I was about ready to pull the trigger on a new Pegas when I accidentally stumbled across a used Pegas in new condition for sale on the Facebook marketplace. How the ad was worded would never show up in a search for scroll saw. It took me two days to get it, but it was worth the trip. The Pegas had been purchased new and never used. So now I need to clear out enough room for the Pegas bandsaw.

  8. Not yet. I need to make space in my shop before buying a Pegas bandsaw. I want one because I think they would be excellent for compound cutting. It would let me cut larger and more detailed cuts. Last year I had someone who wanted a bunch of the reindeer I make with my scrollsaw but much larger than the ones I cut on my scroll saw. I have a bandsaw setup with a Carter Stabilizer and the smallest blade I could get, and I was never able to cut one to my satisfaction successfully. These are not the simple bandsaw reindeer you usually see.

    BRAVEHEART

Mel Gibson as William Wallace in Braveheart. One of my all time favorite movies. The thistle flower, under the quote, is the national flower and emblem of Scotland. In one of my favorite scenes in the movie, Wallace's future wife gives him one at his father's funeral. Also some of the prettiest music of the movie in this scene, A Gift Of A Thistle. Cut in white oak with a stained poplar backer. About 7" x 8".

  14. I have a Pegas Band saw. Sure wish you could test drive one before you made the purchase. I do a lot of compound cutting of chess pieces. There is no way I can cut them with my band saw. It will not turn sharp enough. I love it for my intarsia projects. It will cut thick hard hard wood with ease. I do enough intarsia so it is well worth it even if that is all I use it for. On my scroll saw I have a tendency to push sideways a bit so my pieces end up a bit out of square. I have gotten very frustrated with Pegas because blades and bearings have been a real issue getting. I waited over six months to get #7 bearings. I bought mine from Denny and would highly recommend him if you decide to pull the trigger.

I love it. No question where this portrait comes from, a very good likeness. I agree that this movie is timeless. I've seen it about 3 times now over the years.

  18. I have thought about the charities because then it could be written off the taxes at a more reasonable value.. My old saw was a 1993 and had that problematic motor on it.. I didn't mind selling it at a low price because who knows when / if the motor might have a problem the very next day the person buys it, LOL.. The other saw ( Ultra ) is basically still a new saw where as the old one I got needed lots of work when I got it, I used it quite a bit so it was basically paid for itself anyway..

  19. I price the Hawk to sell as I need the space badly. If it didn't sell I was going to see if one of the charities would take it.

  20. That is a lovely piece Dick. The carving is spot on. I can't imagine that heat. We had a few days where it felt like 100, with the humidity.

  22. Hey Everyone! In this hopefully informative video, I try to show you all the importance of being Ambidextrous on the scroll saw by being able to feed into both the left side and right side of the blade thus, maximizing your scroll saw table and work surface. I also show some production work on the scroll saw as I cut out part of an order for my friend Jim at Shop Dog Turnery! Hope you all like the video! #ArtisanPirate

  25. Dick, I really love your work! Great Carving too! I am sorry it is so hot down there...it is pretty hot the next couple of days here and then it cools down, thank goodness. I guess that will give you more time to learn magic tricks. I still can only do the one and often times I drop my quarter. I think I need a video of the others as even with an explanation I still can't do it. Maybe you will have a chance to come back up to Oregon again, I know it is hard but if you do, you must let @Scrappile and I know so we can have a reunion! Again, fantastic work!

  29. Very nice Dick, we heard on the news how hot it was in AZ this summer, that is why we went in the fall or winter. Now it got way too expensive, rental of accommodation, car rental and travel insurance cannot afforded it anymore.

    My latest clock

my version of the Chimes of Normandy. I left a few things off that I thought weren’t necessary. 1756 holes drilled and only a dozen blades. Made out of quarter inch cherry.

  31. That is a very nice project, Dick. Would look very nice on my wall. My brother-in-law lives in Scottsdale. Tells me it doesn't really get hot there until the temperature is above 105. Is that true. I live in Colorado and has been very nice here. The last couple of days in the upper 70's and low 80's. Right now, 87 here, very nice. Hang tight, should start cooling down sometime around Christmas.

  32. Awesome job, Dick. I can feel your pain concerning the heat. Here in NC we have the heat and humidity which kicks the heat index up several degrees. I run two ceiling fans and a shop fan continuously while in my shop. The wind from these fans along with the perspiration at least keeps it somewhat tolerable. I've considered getting a mister but with the sweat I'm already generating, I feel it would just saturate me rather than cool me. In AZ where you have the dry heat a mister may be beneficial for you. Just remember to drink plenty of fluids.

  33. Really nice, Dick. It's hot down here in the Old Pueblo too. But CG has us beat quite often. My shop is 20X40 with 20' celings and I have a portable swamp cooler and two large fans. Even so, at 117° I'm usually in the house. My day usually starts at 04:00 or earlier. By noon, it's nap time, anyway. Buck up my friend. Cooler weather is on it's way.

  39. What a cool idea to help someone reduce or stop smoking. I tried many times to reduce or stop. Even tried hypnotizing, which didn't work. Finally went cold turkey. Was tough but made it. That was over 20 years ago. Don't remember the exact because I tried so many times. Best of luck to your friend. Your craftsmanship really shows in this project. I hope your friend knows what a good friend he has in you. I salute you. Jerry

  43. A handful of "love" related pieces I've done over the years (in no particular order). The wolf bookmarks stem from a love of reading, I've handed out quite a few of those to others. And what goes better with reading than a nice cuppa coffee!! Caffeinated, for me. As a military history buff and Navy vet, I still love this country (which has nothing to do with political parties). My wife loves gnomes....I've done a couple of them for her, but found the "rock on!" gnomie and that one just screamed for a colorful background. Googled "tye-dye wallpaper", printed it, and it makes for a killer background. Sign language spells L-O-V-E. Not sure where the sculpture pattern came from, that was a couple of years ago.

  44. The 60's were about acceptance, this is the closest I've done. Not my best work, I was asked to make something for a fundraiser a day before it was happening. I think it was a take on a Sue Mey pattern.
