finally got back in the shop
danny and 10 others reacted to heppnerguy for a topic
It has been record breaking heat here and today and yesterday are no exception. It is still in the 100 plus teens here. we are supposed to find some relief in about 2 more days. I can't wait. I have another request for a new project and I need to be able to work in my shop as it is for a wedding taking place this soon. I found this pattern on a paper cutting page of the computer and knew when I saw it that i just had to cut it. this is how it came out. My wife took it off the wall the second day it was finished and gave it to our granddaughter who was at our house helping my wife wife her meds and doctor appointment coming up in a few days. Compound project
danny and 3 others reacted to Scrollshrimp for a topic
Hey everyone, decided to have another go at some 3D compound cutting. This is my 4th attempt so far, it says LOVE on one side and WOOD on the other. Just a piece of pine 1 1/2" square and about 4 1/2" long stained with dark oak. Pattern courtesy of the Scroll saw Workshop, sorry about the quality of the picture ! Regards, Alan.4 points -

My new Halloween set. Each pattern consists of 3 layers, recommended to use stains or 2 types of wood, 1/8 inch. Approximate size of each pattern is 3,5 x 3,5 inches. I added ring for hanging - I think it is great variant for home or jard decoration for Halloween. Patterns at https://www.etsy.com/shop/AlexFoxUA3 points

I came across this in the Big Book of Scroll Saw Woodworking (a library find) and gave it a go. Enlarged the pattern 170% from the book. 16 1/2" long by 6" wide on 5/8" pine. The pattern for the support calls for 1/2" thick but I stayed with 5/8" for it too. Used my new bandsaw to cut the outline of the pattern. (is that cheating?) #5 Pegas MGT blade . Took about 3 hours to prep and cut out. Colored using food dye (from my wife's cake decorating box O' stuff) and denatured alcohol with a small brush. That took about an hour while watching TV. Tried using alcohol and acrylic paint on a previous item but could not get the intensity I wanted for this. Maybe it was the paint. Showed The macaw to my wife and she claimed it . . . so I made another one for the next farmers' market outing. The string holding the support is temporary. Pattern shows a small eye hook at the top of the support for a string/cord, which I still need to do. It can be taken apart and reassembled. So now I'm on a puzzle kick. Made some other smaller animal ones and some have sold, so I'll keep making them too.2 points

You just had to move from Heppner, didn't you? You could have cool 70° weather this week! But in spite of the heat you did beautiful work.2 points

I have so much to learn and I'm not getting any younger... Decided to print out that practice pattern with all of the scrolling examples to try but it was boring... So I decided to test out the different blades I have on another SG pattern Even if I screw it up it's still more fun with the pattern. Tested it on 1/4" BB plywood with the pattern spray glued on clear shelf paper and got a feel for the different brands and styles of blades. It still turned out okay as long as you don't look too close.1 point

Great going Gene. I wish my body would allow me to play golf again... although that would take away time at the scroll saw.1 point

A lot of work went into that. Awesome job!1 point

You could always buy a HEPA filter and make a small enclosure for it then exhaust the vacuum exhaust through it.1 point

Finished a couple pieces over the weekend. The Eagle is a Arpop pattern double stack cut in 1/4-inch ply Birch. One is finished Natural stain while the other is Ipswich. Both have 1/4-inch Pine backers painted black. The frames are custom fit using framing material. The Lab with Duck was at the request of my wife and is a pattern by H. Botas. I double stacked 1/4-inch Maple ply and again finished one with Natural and the other Ipswich. I used 1/4-inch Birch for the backers and painted one black and the other is stained with Espresso. Again, the frames were custom cut using framing material. All the pieces were sprayed with four coats of Polyacrylic with light sanding using 320-grit sandpaper between coats. I used Pegas 2/0, 0, 1 spiral and 2/0 MGT blades. The wife plans to gift one of the Labs with the duck to her dog training instructor. Obviously, she has a Lab. I'm almost finished with a Papillon piece she plans to gift one of her dog training classmates. She and my wife are the only two training Papillons. Both were fun and relatively easy cuts.1 point

Nicely done. It sure looks great, especially the effect the lights gives it. It would be fun to walk into a room with this piece all lit up and grabbing your attention Dick heppnerguy1 point -
Meflick hopefully you will have more room in your new shop.! I could not comprehend moving my shop and all of the tools. I keep the top pickup just behind the blade. Because of how the saws are designed, The bottom one works great on the Hawk not so great on the EX. I started to design an adaptor for the EX that will exit from the left so that I can stick the nozzle in it. I will 3d print it at my library.1 point

I am visiting today. I bought the Festool midi after winning a Festool track saw in a raffle and my wife bought me a Festool RO sander. As I don't us the those tools often I connected it to my Hawk. I mounted the tubing on a wooden base that has two "Mag Switches" so I can easily take it off. Little did I know I was going to buy a used EX 16 as a travel saw. It is now my primary. I just move the dust extractor over. I run the Festool vac at about 50% speed. I have the saw plugged into the Festool outlet so it comes on with my saw. I added a swivel and a dust trap that has a screen in it to catch those tiny pieces that get sucked up that you still want. The swivel allows me to swing the upper arm out of the way and back without messing with my adjustments. Also I did NOT glue any of the joints in case something got jammed in one.1 point

I have a Festool Dust extractor and use it on my Hegner and works very well. I also muse it with my sanders.1 point -

Well, I don't have any wisdom to impart, regarding portable DC, but want to be the first to congratulate you on this new stage in your life. Building a new shop is a dream most of us never get to realize, but have to experience vicariously through others. Hopefully you will post pictures of the progress during construction.1 point -

This is a tough challenge for sure. So it might take a bit of thinking and loose association....LOL. Here's mine. I made this for my son when he was little. He liked playing with matchbox cars, so I made this wavy rainbow so that he can run his cars through the tunnels. it's kinda hippy-like. He actually played with it a fair amount, which surprised me. Sometimes the simplest toys are the best toys.1 point

I'm experiencing the opposite effect. The king is far more aggressive even though I rotated the motor and tuned it down as much as possible in the back to front motion. My king rips through hardwood like it's hot butter. With the same blade and same work piece my hegner slowly moves through. Not terribly slow but noticeably slower. I'm telling myself the hegner will be more accurate to make up for this slower speed. I will say though that the hegner seems to race through hardwood when I tension it really tightly. I broke so many blades when I first got it that I'm afraid I'm a little gun shy now. I'm slowly getting the tension figured our and hopefully once I have mastered the hegner it will be satisfactory. I do like how quiet and smooth it is.1 point
