  3. I came across this in the Big Book of Scroll Saw Woodworking (a library find) and gave it a go. Enlarged the pattern 170% from the book. 16 1/2" long by 6" wide on 5/8" pine. The pattern for the support calls for 1/2" thick but I stayed with 5/8" for it too. Used my new bandsaw to cut the outline of the pattern. (is that cheating?) #5 Pegas MGT blade . Took about 3 hours to prep and cut out. Colored using food dye (from my wife's cake decorating box O' stuff) and denatured alcohol with a small brush. That took about an hour while watching TV. Tried using alcohol and acrylic paint on a previous item but could not get the intensity I wanted for this. Maybe it was the paint. Showed The macaw to my wife and she claimed it . . . so I made another one for the next farmers' market outing. The string holding the support is temporary. Pattern shows a small eye hook at the top of the support for a string/cord, which I still need to do. It can be taken apart and reassembled. So now I'm on a puzzle kick. Made some other smaller animal ones and some have sold, so I'll keep making them too.

It's so great to hear from you J.T. even on this sad note. Please consider rejoining us here on SSV. We need your sage advice more now than ever. Lots of new scrollers. ComeONBACK! I did not want to comment in the thread about Rick Hutcheson because that is not about me. So just a quick note to say HI to the villagers who remember me and to answer Ray's post. Just an update as to my doings. Since the great shut down of the pandemic, the shows I was attending never made a comeback so my scrolling days came to an end. I sold off my Dewalt788 and Hegner18" saws for a fairly cheap price and it sounded like the new owners were enthused to have them. I did keep my 2 RBI's 220 and 226. But they have been idle and I have shifted my focus to turning and mostly the making of pens. I found these are far easier to sell and to also give away. I have included a couple photos of my last show I did and my set up. I really do have alot of stuff to get rid of. as I have gotten older the desire to do shows like that is not there any more. Last year I did sell some things through FB market place and may at some time do a yard sale thing and sell things from the garage to lighten the load for my family when I pass. The eyes and hands are definitely not the same. It is good that there are new members joining the site and choosing scrolling as their hobby of choice. It still has its merits but not what it once was. I basically can not add any new sage advice that has not been given by the senior members here, I am sure. But did want to say a BIG HELLO to all and maybe I will poke my head in from time to time again. Hope all are doing well.

  6. Did this Russ Beard pattern for a customer, used 1/4” ply wood, cut with a #0 pin less blade, finished with two coats Danish Oil, light coat Mahogany Stain and two coats clear varnish. I’m happy with the end result and so is the customer.

    Compound project

Hey everyone, decided to have another go at some 3D compound cutting. This is my 4th attempt so far, it says LOVE on one side and WOOD on the other. Just a piece of pine 1 1/2" square and about 4 1/2" long stained with dark oak. Pattern courtesy of the Scroll saw Workshop, sorry about the quality of the picture ! Regards, Alan.

  13. I've had the occasion a few times to mention my intention to filing a complaint to the Better Business Bureau and other agencies with success. And on other times I've found out who the CEO is and sent a letter direct to them about the issue. The pen is mightier than the sword maybe sometimes.

Good to hear from you JT, You have a wealth of knowledge that many could benefit from here on the Village site since there is way more here than just scroll saw work such as a lot of just general woodworking talk happens here too. Not sure you're aware but Travis made some specific groups only available to a certain level of support / subscriptions. There is a turners group, laser and CNC etc.. and just general crafts groups. You can access the groups section from the top toolbar that says "groups" Not sure how much talk is going on in the turners or other groups but anyway just thought I'd mention it in case you might want to check it out. Love to see you visit more often.

  15. I just finished this Horses Reflection wood-art piece on my scroll saw. It is 11 x 14 x 1/8 inch Baltic Birch plywood. 763 individual cuts. Many hours were put into this one.

  16. Nice job, Dick. And as far as you trying out the paint you purchased, with your talent I don't think you will have any problems at all. I cut and painted a piece when I first started scrolling and used a paint brush. Since then I've purchased a couple air brushes and found they do a fantastic job. You can use cheap acrylic hobby paint from Walmart and just thin it down with a little water. Harbour Freight has a couple air brushes that work well for me. I will add that I limit my painting due to the fact that I like the beauty of the wood. In most cases I try to stay with stain and typically only paint when there is a defect in the wood or I screw up and have to hide it with the paint.

  17. Since I retired last year I decided to turn my one car garage into a little wood working hobby shop. Been trying many different things to find an area that would be the most and "safest" to learn. The addition of the scroll saw last week is something that I really want to dive into. I'm sure I can gather much useful information here.

  18. It has been record breaking heat here and today and yesterday are no exception. It is still in the 100 plus teens here. we are supposed to find some relief in about 2 more days. I can't wait. I have another request for a new project and I need to be able to work in my shop as it is for a wedding taking place this soon. I found this pattern on a paper cutting page of the computer and knew when I saw it that i just had to cut it. this is how it came out. My wife took it off the wall the second day it was finished and gave it to our granddaughter who was at our house helping my wife wife her meds and doctor appointment coming up in a few days. 22. My new Halloween set. Each pattern consists of 3 layers, recommended to use stains or 2 types of wood, 1/8 inch. Approximate size of each pattern is 3,5 x 3,5 inches. I added ring for hanging - I think it is great variant for home or jard decoration for Halloween. Patterns at https://www.etsy.com/shop/AlexFoxUA

  37. Prayers are said for his family and friends as they deal with the loss. While I believe I have heard or seen his name, I don’t believe I ever had the pleasure to interact with him or have seen his website. Sounds like it is my loss. @JTTHECLOCKMAN I wanted to say it’s good to see you here in the Village and to say you have been missed. I have wondered about you (and some others we haven’t seen in a bit.) Hope you are doing well.

    Rough out blade

When roughing out blanks, I use what ever blade is already in the saw from the previous cut. If there is no blade in the saw I would use what ever blade I use the least. It matter not what blade to use for roughing out.
