  1. I’ve accumulated a fair amount of small pieces of wood which I prefer to make use of rather than waste. Making more of these small cars helps while at the same time increasing my inventory. Walnut and maple.

  2. I'm sorry to hear about that. He created a brand new account a couple of weeks ago and started posting. He said he lost his info because his old phone broke. He also reached out to me to get his other account. I've sent him a few emails, but he hasn't responded. I can help him. Once he feels better, we can get him squared away.

  4. I will be heading to Toronto at the end of the month for a family event. Perfect opportunity to get the Christmas gifts ready to take (instead of shipping). Toy car is Cherry with Maple bumpers - pattern from here. Tic Tac Toe is bb ply with maple covers. Original pattern from Al Baggetta. Added the box cover myself. Segmented snowman pattern from Steve Good. These are for my nieces & nephew so I asked them their favourite colours. Scarves are done in those. It was kinda surprising that 3 of the 4 liked the same colours. These are painted with craft paints. Buttons also painted, because I didn't have any small black ones. Everything is finished with Walrus Oil.

    B-24 Liberator

Consolidated B-24 Liberator The B-24 was the greatest produced aircraft of WW II. Between 5 different locations, 18,500 including 4,600 at the Ford Willow Run facility were manufactured. The initial order was in 1939 and were produced from 1940 to 1945. Compared to the B-17, It flew faster (297KTS) and more range (1,500 to 1,800 Miles) It did fly 2,000 feet lower than the B-17 and was hit more often by enemy flak. It was operated by the USAAF and Navy along with the RAF, RAAF and Indian AF. The aircraft was multi mission to include bombing, antisubmarine and transport and flew the “Hump” over the Himalayas from India to China. More info on Wikipedia. Some notables to fly on the aircraft were, Walter Matthau, George McGovern and Jimmy Stewart. This was a fun project and I had to add some bridges on the fly as I cut. It is 17 x 12” on 1/8” BBPW with ¼” Backer. Shellac and Gloss Lacquer finish. Font is Umbria and is easy to cut because there are no bridges. I may need to give the aircraft a rest for a while and do some boxes or fret work again.

  8. Kevin responded to me on Facebook. He has been suffering from COVID. He had it 3 times. Not doing too well walking now, and in a lot of pain. He had his cell phone go bad and lost passwords and access to many groups as a result of it. Give him a shout on Facebook and I'm sure that he will happily return a message to you. I think he could use the friendship right now. If anyone can help him regain access to www.scrollsawvillage.com I think he would be very thankful. Charley

    Blade lubricant?

I too use packing over the pattern. The trick is when applying it, make sure you apply it flat on the pattern without any air bubbles between the tape and pattern. Then I burnish it with a small block of wood to remove any remaining air bubbles. This prevents saw dust from getting under the tape and the tape lubricates the blade so there is less burning and a smoother cut. Other scrollers use blue painters tape under the pattern. There is a chemical in the tape that helps prevent the tape from sticking to itself when you unroll it. This additive is what lubricates the blade.

Welcome to the Villiage, Jack. So far, it sounds like your saw is newer than 1998. Hope to see some of your work soon.

  12. I just looked and the gross is still $3.20 per doz. The 1 - 5 is $4.21 which I think is up. My go to blade is the FDUR#1. I have tried and the MGTs and they are little more aggressive and I don't think they are as smooth on interior cuts.

    Jack - Post updated

I was on vacation last week and still have a couple of days left before heading back to work. Decided to make some more jack-o-lanterns. I made some 3 sides, rather large ones several years ago, but I kept finding myself watching Travis' video tutorial on his versions and decided to make some smaller ones. I just made one today to see how everything went and will make more over the next day or so. I used some old Cedar fence boards that I kept after a hurricane knocked down my fence a few years ago... Oh, side story.... I needed to change the blades on my planer before sending anymore boards thru it. So yesterday I took it all apart and reversed the blades and cleaned/lubed everything up.. looks and operates like brand new! Back to Jack... I had some orange paint that I thinned out a little so that the grain and torch marks would show. I just need to order me some LED's to finish it. I made another one of these jack-o-lanterns and received some lights that I ordered. In a couple of the pics I have just some regular tea lights in the bottoms. Another pic I have the LED light strand that I ordered,, I like both lights but the LED's can flash a variety of ways.

    Blade lubricant?

Thank you for the advice. I'll try the tape.

    Blade lubricant?

While the concept may be sound, I suspect the practical application in scrolling has very limited benefits. I would think, to have any affect, you would need to apply the wax almost constantly during the cut. The size of the blade really limits how much wax can be applied and how long it lasts. As Dan mentioned, the old standby of packing tape is probably a more effective method.

  22. Thanks for your comments. Rodney I agree with how you feel about Lowes. They sell just Birch Plywood. I started with them Long, long ago. Now I only use that for Backers on many. The Scrolling part of cutting a Pattern is a take a chance for maybe running into a Void in the wood. Terrble Sound when you are Happily cutting and run into one. In time I Knew what that meant. Anyway I did talk to Denny and he was nice enough to send me a Starter pack. I Really Really did give them a Chance using them, but just to Aggressive for my way of cutting. Been with FDUR#1 for many years. Only blade I ever use. Anyway I will just have to BITE THE BULLET so to speak and pay the Higher cost. BooHoo. Danny :+}

    Peeking Cat

This is another of Jim Blume's fantastic patterns. I double stacked a new wood (in this area) that was labeled as being "Blonde" and cut the pieces using Pegas 2/0 spiral blades. The piece with the black frame was stained with Natural and has a black cardboard backer. (A test to see how it worked.) The brown framed piece was stained with Ipswich and given a black wooden backer cut large enough to give it a border between the piece and the frame. Both frames were custom cut using pre-fab framing material. The pieces were sprayed with 4-coats of Polyacrylic and sanded with 320-grit between coats. While the "Blonde" wood cut alright and the presence of fuzzies were about the same as other woods, it did not have the wood grain I enjoy seeing in my pieces after finishing. I also cut another project with this wood and it really lacked the vibrance of a natural wood grain. If I decide to cut a piece I plan to paint, this may be a good choice because it is less expensive than Maple or Birch. However, if I plan to put several hours into a piece, I want the finished product to gleam with a unique grain pattern that shows the beauty of the wood. That pattern itself was an easy cut despite the number of frets. Jim did a great job. You would think by looking at it there would be some delicate areas. Actually, it was pretty stout even after the final cut.

  31. At least blades give you service. My issue lately has been with wood. My only outlet for wood in my rural area is Lowe's. Spending hours cutting a piece only to have it ruined when you remove the pattern and it delaminates. Just ordered a few pieces of wood from Ocooch to see if their quality is better than Lowe's. I agree with RJ. Denny at artcraftersonline.com has served me well with his customer service as well as pricing. I've spoken to him several times and he's always eager to assist. I recently had to order some 3/0 blades which Pegas doesn't make and used another business. When they arrived, the blades were in an envelope and sometime during shipment had been bent in the middle. Guess where those blades would break. Denny secures his blades on a sturdy cardboard before placing inside the envelope. Plus, with a certain amount you get free shipping.

    Buddies

This is another Jim Blume pattern I previously cut and has become one of my best sellers. This was one of a double stack using the new type of wood (Blonde) at my local box store. The piece is 11X14 with my typical finish of Natural stain with a black backer followed by 4-coats of Polyacrylic. Frame was made using framing material. While this wood is not as pretty as Maple or Birch, I haven't had any problems with it delaminating as I have had with the "premium" wood. Thanks, Jim, for another beautiful pattern.

  41. 3/4 ply cut with free blades from our member Kmcrafts. I think it is a #3 I needed to go forward much slower but time holding my arms up is scarce. Still needs a nice routed edge and try an true up the mistakes. Thanks for looking! The flowers get enlarged when I can stand and take all the clutter off the printer to clear a jam . The letter (R) popped out as it had a weak point in the word Jardin.

    TROUBLEMAKER

Black patches under the eyes give this troublemaker a masked appearance. Raccoons are cunning animals with great dexterity and an abundance of curiosity. They venture from the woods at night stirring up all kinds of trouble for farmers and home owners. This project utilized a piece of polished African Sapele 18" x 12" x 1", cut on the scroll saw and then carved. It was painted with artist oil paints and acrylic paints with a water based satin Minwax Polycrylic protective coat. Thanks for looking. Dick Mira
