I know I haven't posted anything for a while but I have been working, just forgetting to post, so when I get chance you will be inundated with photos. Anyway this is what I am working on at the moment. 29 names for a customer, some will go to Ireland, some to Norway and the rest will stay in Australia. They are all made from 1/2" pine and they will have a clear finish. Blades were no. 3 PMG. (Pegas Modified Geometry) Marg8 points

Just finished this beautiful patter by Russ Beard, double stack cut on 4mm Birch Plywood using a #0 Niqua straight pin less blade. Needs to be varnished and framed. I have cut another five Russ Beard pattern but I’m not ready to post them yet. My workshop is in turmoil at the moment as we are packing and relocating to Cape Town, South Africa. So I’m very limited as to what I can do at the moment. Love doing these Fretwork Complex cuts, gives me great satisfaction.8 points -
Halloween Lantern
heppnerguy and 3 others reacted to FrankEV for a topic
I found groups of Halloween images that were available for making papercut lanterns. I put together various images to create scroll saw patterns for a four sided Halloween Lantern with four different sides. I already had some Transparent Orange Acrylic Plastic from my Previous Night Light project that I added the Drafting Velum to, to make it translucent. I used 1/4“ Solid Core Birch Ply. The lantern is 5.5" square by 8" tall (not including the 1 1/2" hight hanging pinicle on top). I used my typical mitered corners construction technique and the box was painted Black inside and out. Not happy with the finish as there are blemishes that are visible in the Photos below. I can't sand and repaint with the plexi in place and the box all glued together. I wanted the lantern to be lit with a battery operated LED light of some kind. I was looking at various products in Hobby Lobby and came across this small ‘Bottle Twinkle Light set with 10 LEDs’ for $2.99. The battery compartment is shaped like a cork for use in a bottle. I drilled a 5/8” dia. Hole in the bottom of the lantern. I inserted it with the Lights bunched up as you can se in the Photo below, so it acted like a lightbulb and is easily inserted and/or removed. Perfect amount of light. I plan to buy some very lightweight Black, 12 to 18" long, chain and hooks for hanging. Comments and critiques always welcome.4 points -

I have been so busy at work @ NATO SACT HQ, finishing up one project and starting another one, plus I have been working on my permanent dust collection system in my workshop the last two weekends. Did a very easy project this AM. I really love walnut and how it finishes with raw linseed oil. The chocolaty color is yummy! This is a flag holder and it is for one of the cleaning ladies at NATO SACT HQ. I see her at 5:30 AM when I go from the 5th to the 3rd floor to get ice and filtered water. Somehow when we were talking she mentioned needing a flag stand for her flags. This actually holds three (3) flags. So it will have the NATO Flag, the US (or any other country) Flag, and the HQ SACT Flag. I like this design so much, I might crank out another one for my desk!!! Perhaps making it a hair bigger 30-50%.3 points -
Nothing fancy here, but I have all my ducks in a row. I don't know how many little animal cutouts I have made over the years. Over a thousand, for sure. I learned how to use my first scroll saw to make animal cutouts. Kids love them, and so do some adults. All but two of these are cut from oak using #5 Pegas MGT blades. Two are salvaged mystery wood.3 points

Illinois State Fair Strikes Again
MTCowpoke22 and one other reacted to harpolemond for a topic
These past four years there have been Three Illinois state fairs. unfortunately last year was cancelled because of Covid. I generally choose a very detailed fretwork piece to enter into the IL state fairs woodworking scroll saw devision. I have finished 1st place in that woodworking devision for the last three years running. This year I decided on another clock. I will include it in this post as a jpeg. I have seen several places in this forum and other places people wanting to know what kind of blades they use. It is a personal preference for us all, however the following has helped me win first place three years running. Sharktooth #1 and 2 Various Pegas MGT or modified geometry for the line cuts and extreem cutouts Superior puzzle blades by Flying Dutchman for various wider cut outs This is all I use and since it has served me well, just thought some of you might like to know ds2 points -

Here another one fresh out of my shop. I cut one of this pattern not too long ago but I cut it on a little bit darker board and it was no way I was able to make it stand out very well so I did it over again and I am better with this one then the first one. It is for a Christmas present for one of the family member with a couple of cats that they love and I hope this one will find a nice place in their home. Dick heppnerguy1 point -
Winged Dragon
heppnerguy reacted to FrankEV for a topic
I found this B&W image on-line a while ago. There is no Artist, owner or originator listed. The image is a little different with the fire-like border and skyline at the bottom. Not sure if the Dragon is contemplating destruction or guardianship. Anyway, I converted the image into a 11” x 14” Scroll Saw Pattern and have been trying to decide whether to cut it or not for several weeks now. My lady liked the Image but, wasn’t sure the thin linges of the wings were going be seen well against the white background, so I decided to add a second color, Grey, to highlight the wings and other features of the dragon, but still be mainly a B&W presentation. The cut panel is 5/32" thk. Solid Core Birch Ply affixed to a 1/4” BB Ply Air brush painted backer. Small details were cut using a Pegas #2/0 Spiral blade while the bigger cut outs areas were done using a Pegas #1 MGT R blade. Even with the many close parallel line cuts, the cutting was easier than expected. The Panel is set into a museum style narrow, ¾” wide, rail Floating Frame that was also painted black. And as usual, the assembled panel was protected with multiple coats of Deft Clear Gloss Lacquer. I'm tempted to break my own rule of only cutting a pattern once. I think I could do wonders with some coloring...red/yellow flame border, hazy smokey Red/Orange sky background like the city is burning, maybe different color for the wings. Would be a fun project. Comments and critiques always welcome. This project was an example of efective multi-tasking. I was cutting and paintig this project while the glue and paint dried on my Halloween Lantern Project. EDIT: Pattern posted in Pattern Exchange EDIT #2: Patterns posted in Pattern Exchange have been revised and reposted.1 point -

Actually, with this NATO display and any other flag presentation, this is one time the Flag protocol of the USA is not followed. It's the same with any NATO flag display. All 31 Alliance member countries of the Alliance are equal to each other and to the NATO Flags. Even at NATO HQ SACT which is hosted on a US Navy base the US flag is at equal height to all others. The only time a country flag is features is on "National Days", or other special country events and the flag is moved to the middle section of Flag Plaza. Still, all flags remain the same height. Below the first photo is a front view of HQ SACT FLag Plaza (I work on the top floor of the "Blue Cube"). Photo 2, The Sunrise one I took with my back to the building looking out to the North East. Photo 3 is from the middle of the plaza looking out.1 point -
First things first, the projects look great. Second: The use of the word Xmas should never be used in place of Christmas. Christmas is a time to remember the birth of our Lord and Savior. His name should not be x’ed out.1 point

Jerry Here's what mine looks like with 3 flags. Here are the two things I think you should do if you are going to do 3 flags. First scale up 40-50%. Next, for the two outer holes for the flags, I would angle 15 degrees outward, this will give the flags a place to open up. Below is how this one looks according to the PDF. I think I am going to make another. I gave this one to our cleaning lady, and she was so thrilled.1 point -

I came across this in the Big Book of Scroll Saw Woodworking (a library find) and gave it a go. Enlarged the pattern 170% from the book. 16 1/2" long by 6" wide on 5/8" pine. The pattern for the support calls for 1/2" thick but I stayed with 5/8" for it too. Used my new bandsaw to cut the outline of the pattern. (is that cheating?) #5 Pegas MGT blade . Took about 3 hours to prep and cut out. Colored using food dye (from my wife's cake decorating box O' stuff) and denatured alcohol with a small brush. That took about an hour while watching TV. Tried using alcohol and acrylic paint on a previous item but could not get the intensity I wanted for this. Maybe it was the paint. Showed The macaw to my wife and she claimed it . . . so I made another one for the next farmers' market outing. The string holding the support is temporary. Pattern shows a small eye hook at the top of the support for a string/cord, which I still need to do. It can be taken apart and reassembled. So now I'm on a puzzle kick. Made some other smaller animal ones and some have sold, so I'll keep making them too.1 point

A clear Acrylic or Lacquer protective coating should help deter rapid fading. Unfortunately, direct sun will fade almost anything ovrt time. If you like dying your pieces, there are wood dyes available, both in powder and liqud forms. I have used them a long time ago. They work like a water based Stain. And, they do rasise the grain requireing additional sanding. Back then, I would coat the dyed project with Poly or Lacquer as a permanent protective finish. Better verity of colors than typical mineral sperit stains.1 point

Thank you. Our cleaning people are people just like you and me. They are just as important as any NATO officer or civilian in the job they do at HQ. We all treat them with respect as a team member. Behind the scenes, they keep the place clean and sterile. The restrooms are super clean and actually smell nice in comparison to other military bases I have been on. Not too difficult to treat everyone with respect. We need more of it.1 point -

Great work~!1 point -
This vase (pattern by Steve Good) was part of the meeting of the Scrollers Chapter of the Central Indiana Woodworkers. We used the flower pattern to test how polymer clays could enhance our scrolled projects. Other items, like keychains, could be use for clays. We learned the clay is very hard after it is baked. The best way is to insert the clay is from the back of the item and push it into the hole. We got a used toaster oven from Good Will that is used only for baking clays. Plus when pushing the clay in, we used a stone below the item to prevent any chemicals from the clay to leach out. You will notice, there is a slight bulge on the material after it is baked.1 point
