This is a Jim Blume pattern cut from 1/4-inch Baltic Birch stained natural with a Birch backer stained Ebony. The frame is pre-fab framing material cut to size. The piece has four coats of Polyacrylic with light sanding with 320-grit sandpaper between coats. I primarily used Pegas 2/0 spiral blades with a few Pegas 2/0 MGT blades in a few areas. Overall it was a really fun cut. Thanks again, Jim Blume, for a great pattern.9 points -

I was looking for a way to display some of my scroll saw work and I came upon these " brick clips " on Amazon. I believe they have several sizes. They are pretty heavy duty and you can manipulate them somewhat to make smaller or bigger. They are reasonably priced. Thought someone might find a need for this item.4 points -
Just a quick final update. WEN came through and shipped me a new base. Wasn't sure if I was going to install it or not but decided I might need the base to attach a vise or clamp to, to hold a long piece of work. I cut two 1 1/4" long sleeves, one for each bolt, from 1/2" steel pipe to use between the underside of the base and the bench. This worked to prevent, the 1/2" bolts I used to attach the base to the bench, from bending the britttle base and break it like I did to the original. I was able to tighten the bolts down well so it is firmly attached to the bench. It runs quite and smooth. Here are pics of the final instal: I guess you can say I'm happy with the results.3 points

This project was cut on a 16" x 10" x 5/8" piece of salvaged American Chestnut using patterns by Jacob Fowler and Sue Walters for the scrollsawing which I then modified during the carving process. It was stained with artist oil paints and finished with Minwax Polycrylic finish. The Chestnut seen in the background was not stained and this is the natural color of the wood. It was easy to see why Chestnut was so popular among the early American furniture craftsmen because of its workability and finishing qualities. Dick2 points

Barbara, I’m not quite sure what you are wanting to make but the heat generated and dissipated inside a box that has a lot of open fretwork shouldn’t be that much of a concern as long as the light source you’re using doesn’t get crazy hot. When I make my Nite Lites the light chamber is only about 2”x 4” x 7” high and the only "venting" is from the scrolled front panel. I use a 7w nightlight bulb and never have a problem with heat build up. IMG_1469.webp2 points

Monster Mash Scroll Saw Challenge

Skeleton Cat. A pattern from the Scroll saw Workshop which I did slightly differently. The cat is cut from a 1/4 inch Bamboo chopping board then sprayed black. To cut the skeleton I used a very fine drill for the blade entry holes then cut out each piece and painted them white. The pieces were then carefully glued back into place and because the cat does not have a backing board the skeleton can be seen from both sides. Happy Halloween everyone ! Regards, Alan.2 points -
I was commissioned to make this plaque for a client who works for American Airlines. He plans to give it to a long time colleague who is retiring after the first of the year. I combined fretwork and intarsia. The lettering was so delicate that I decided to fill it with black wood filler. I used blue pine for the background and frame.1 point

Are you needing a new printer?
Roberta Moreton reacted to CharleyL for a topic
I'm still using an HP LaserJet 4 printer that was given to me almost 20 years ago. They still sell off brand refilled cartridges for it, so why upgrade? It does what I want for scrolling. I have an Epson for office scanning and printing and a Canon IX 6820 for photo work. The Canon can do the 13 X 19 if I ever need, but it's been a couple of years since I scrolled anything that needed a sheet larger than 8 1/2 X 11". Maybe, when I run out of easy-to-get toner cartridges for the Laserjet 4, I'll replace it with something newer, but I just don't see needing a better printer for my scrolling needs right now. circuit board replacement
Roberta Moreton reacted to CharleyL for a topic
The only repair that I've done on the electronics of a DeWalt 788 scroll saw was to replace the speed control potentiometer of one of the 788 saws that belong to my woodworking club's Outreach Program. The saw on it's stand had not been secured adequately and fell over in the trailer, bending the shaft of the speed control. This was when Radio Shack was still in business, so a trip to the local store found the 10 K ohm potentiometer, but with a 3" long shaft. A few seconds in my workbench vice and a hack saw corrected the length of the shaft and it was an easy installation after that. DeWalt had wanted to sell the complete electronics board together with the speed control potentiometer for something like $70, but I fixed it for about $5. There isn't much to go wrong with the electronics. 1. If you are certain that power is reaching this board (bad fuse or switch maybe) from power plug through power switch and up to the board, and 2. testing the motor leads (without power) using an ohmmeter (to check for good brushes and a few ohms of resistance of the motor windings) shows that the motor should be functional, then the problem has likely to be something wrong with the circuit board. I would make certain that both the power and the motor test good at this point before proceeding with the circuit board repair or replacement. I think the circuit board is the least likely source of your problem. Charley1 point -
Barbara, I am a licensed electrician, and see nothing wrong with what you plan to make as long as you keep the lamp wattage low or go with LED light and in either case, leave some clearance and vents around and above the bulb to allow the heat to escape. For an LED or a 4-8 watt bulb you won't need much clearance, as long as air can circulate up through past the light and out through the top (kind-of like a chimney). I can't imagine what design you have planned or what light source you plan on using, but if you keep ventilation in mind when building it, you should have success. Posting a little of the details might help me (and others) better understand if adequate ventilation is an issue or not. I will continue to watch (and comment) on this post as you design and build this. Charley1 point

You are doing such fabulous projects. I tried this style and was not very successful with it. Maybe some day after the holidays are over I just might give it another shot. You are so inspiring with your skill. I love seeing your posts Dick heppnerguy1 point -

I have a good friend that likes my projects and as a result I have made several for him on his birthday. We have coffee at in his open garage every morning. Because he spends so much of his time sitting in his garage, he choose to hang my work in it so others can see and enjoy them too. Of all the pieces he has there now, this Jim Blume bass is his favorite. I am sure this one you just finished will one day also be the favorite one for whom ever gets it. Your work is always so nice and this one is no exception. Beautifully done. Dick heppnerguy1 point -

Get close enough to a Monet, and you can find flaws. ....find em fast, though, security doesn't like folks pointing out imperfections. Nicely cut though!!! Where'd the pattern come from?1 point -

I never did get a photo of the wedding cross thing... Since we are going into the Christmas season my top selling ornament is this BMX bike ornament. I threw just a clipart image onto a sprocket image in inkscape and created this.. I believe I posted the pattern here but it's not a cleaned up pattern.. You just have to guess at where the bridges need to be etc, LOL.. I think I did this 3 years ago and was very late into the holiday season so I only sold a handful of them.. last season I sold around 120 of them at $16 each + shipping.. They are selling already this season too so my experience is what starts selling early is going to be the "hot seller" for this season. They are not the funnest to cut with that gear and when having to make so many.. was a fun cut for the last couple years but now it's getting annoying to make, LOL I may stop making them as there is a point and time where then it becomes a job.. or maybe just keep raising the price until the sales slow way up or stop, which is more typically what I tend to do.. Also this laser engraved and cut sonographer ornament that I hand paint the details on.. sold around 200 last year at $18 + shipping each.. have already sold 40 this year. The Mechanic and the Linemen are very close second place ones.. I'm kinda getting away from making larger items and sort of going away from scrolling and moving towards laser stuff.. The demand is way higher for laser engraved than just plain scrolled items for me currently.. much easier to personalize a ornament with the laser than on a scroll saw.. seems that's what everyone is asking for is personalized engravings so I'm just following up with what is wanted.1 point

What is Your Best Seller??
Phantom Scroller reacted to scrollerpete for a topic
I agree with Joe, the Penny drop game is my best seller also, a lady ordered 4 about 2 months ago and then while a was making them she wants to increase to 6, she just ordered 6 more last week. I just cannot keep any in the inventory. I have 3 shows coming before Christmas and I have only 7 in stock1 point -

I started with the two here, then saw other faces to try. I spray painted after I cut the face so it looked more like the insides of a pumpkin. also i cut bamboo skewer sticks as small dowels to be able to open back. then i used branches from a small dead tree, at the Y so can hang if want to with the top glued and brad nailed 20230925_165604.mp41 point -

Halloween? We never do anything for Halloween anymore. We live out in the country, and since all the kids on our little private road have grown up and left, we have no trick or treaters at all. Pretty sad, but such is life. I looked, I have only made on thing in my life related to Halloween. I made a pen for a Halloween pen contest. I did use the scroll saw to cut out the bats. The blank. is made from black pvc pipe, there were two halves to make up the blank, so the bats are in different locations on each side.1 point

Thanks for the update. The people of Ukraine are in our prayers daily. Personally I am supporting Samaritan’s Purse. They have an emergency field hospital just inside the border. Check it out. Another way to help Alex personally is to buy his patterns. I have six of his bowl patterns and plan to buy more.1 point -
