  1. Last puzzle for the upcoming craft sale. Cut from Poplar with MG#5 blade. I have painted the hardboard backer to represent the sea. There are about 4 shades of blue that I sponged on. Didn't get a picture of the backer. I have priced it at $50 so we'll see!

  3. My son asked if I could find a good pattern of Jimi Hendrix and scroll three one for himself and two to give to guitar friends. So I found this pattern by Charles Dearing. My son approved it. Stack cut 4- 1/8 thick" 16" tall x11" wide.

  4. Ok Last one. I put some of my cutouts together on one of the round wood discs I got from Menards (pay attention Ray) and this is what I came up with. Have a Happy Halloween Everyone. Hope you have lots of little trick or treaters.

  5. Found a maple leaf in the yard, used a glue stick to hold it down to trace outline, spray glued it to a board and scrolled it in less than 5 minutes. Since I wasn't overthinking every turn as I usually do, I was spinning and cutting like a seasoned pro. It could have been because I wasn't too concerned if it got messed up but it was good practice for making better turns with confidence.. Figured I might as well draw some veins and scroll them too... Then what the heck, throw some color on it too!

  10. Hmmm, I'll have to try that - I've been using MS so far and it does color the wood a little.

    Happy with it...

Took me a while, but added a backer, stained, and clear coat sprayed on (by my husband) and now in a box headed south for my Mom. I love how it turned out!

  13. Just finished this Edmonton Oilers NHL plaque for my father. He was born in Edmonton, Alberta and came to live in the UK when he was 5 years old. He is now in his early 90s and has been a lifelong Oilers fan. The letters and border were cut out individually then painted accordingly and glued back into place, finished with a few coats of clear lacquer. I myself am a Colorado Avalanche fan ! Regards, Alan.

That is a fabulous project. You have given your mother something she will love and treasure for the rest of her life. Think about the many times she will show her friends and family this piece and I know she will have many hours just enjoying looking at it herself. Dick heppnerguy

  16. Another Steve Good design finished over the weekend and I spent way too much time and trouble... I hate to scroll ovals, especially two with one being slightly larger for the backer. Nothing seemed to go right. Drilled the entry holes a tad too little in the tight spots and bent new blades trying to bottom feed. I ran an old blade in first to make the holes a bit larger and it helped "some" of the time. Got so pissed I loosened the clamps and tried to snatch the bent blade out but, forgot to loosen the bottom one and sliced my thumb. Good thing the blades have small teeth. It kept going downhill when the flat black paint on the wood backer showed fish eyes and had to repaint even though the wood was prepped properly. I also wanted to line the backer up to have an even reveal all around and didn't want to chance it with glue and have it set up before I got it centered. So, I ended up using double stick tape which let me move it around before I put the pressure on it. Whew, didn't mean to write a book but sometimes something that I thought would be easy to do ends up kicking my butt!!!

Yes, mine too. I say I have plenty of will power. But I don't have any "won't power" when it comes to her cooking.

    Lunker Bass

This is a Jim Blume pattern cut from 1/4-inch Baltic Birch stained natural with a Birch backer stained Ebony. The frame is pre-fab framing material cut to size. The piece has four coats of Polyacrylic with light sanding with 320-grit sandpaper between coats. I primarily used Pegas 2/0 spiral blades with a few Pegas 2/0 MGT blades in a few areas. Overall it was a really fun cut. Thanks again, Jim Blume, for a great pattern.

    Lunker Bass

I have a good friend that likes my projects and as a result I have made several for him on his birthday. We have coffee at in his open garage every morning. Because he spends so much of his time sitting in his garage, he choose to hang my work in it so others can see and enjoy them too. Of all the pieces he has there now, this Jim Blume bass is his favorite. I am sure this one you just finished will one day also be the favorite one for whom ever gets it. Your work is always so nice and this one is no exception. Beautifully done. Dick heppnerguy

    Advice please

I've made night lights that are fully enclosed and use up to an equivalent 40W LED bulb without any concerns. Today's LED bulbs are very cool. If you are making a lamp shade of the same size as an existing shade, there should be no concerns at all, whatever bulb size you use.

Thank you. I cut the flower and the larger veining near the flower with a spiral, but switched over to a straight blade for the rest. Not perfect when you give it the "serious eye", but from a viewing distance it all disappears. Nice how that works out. LOL

    Taz

Another Cartoon character for my collection. At a recent Art Show, a gentleman asked me if I could do a special Tazmanian Devil like the one he had tattooed on his arm. Basically, it was the Loony Tune character with the Tornado at the bottom, and it had a Dumbbell in one hand and a Wrench in the other. The inference, I think, of being a “Body Mechanic”. I found a ton of images available and found this image that I modified to mimic his tattoo and sent him a copy of my pattern for his approval. He liked it and said he would think about it and get back to me, but I feel the price tag was a little above what his pocketbook could handle. I will be happy if he does, but I don’t expect him to get back to me any time soon. In the meantime, I liked the original image and decided to make it as I found it. I converted the image into an 11” x 14” Scroll Saw Pattern. The cut panel is a 5/32” solid core Maple ply affixed to a 1/4” BB Ply backer. Color was added to both the Backer and the Cut Panel, with the original image as a guide, using Artist Acrylic Air Brush Paints. I think my coloration came out well and is close to the original. The painted and assembled panel was finished with multiple coats of Clear Gloss Acrylic Coating. The frame is my standard 1 3/4” wide rails, primed and painted black. I’ll post my pattern in pattern exchange for the Cartoon maker bunch among us. As usual, I welcome comments and critiques.

  38. dgman, I use a rack just like yours. Started cutting the patterns from Sue Mey as well. They are stand up birdhouses. I sold 25 of the birdhouses this past weekend. I don't glue the bird in when displayed. I give the customer the option to have whatever bird they choose. Once selected I glue them in before wrapping them. Probably have given away double that to family and friends and folks that just stop by wondering what I'm working on in the garage. Lots of fun to cut.
