Special requests
Charlie E and 3 others reacted to barb.j.enders for a topic
These are special requests for a friend. Fynn is for their first grandson. The parents are avid kayakers, so it is shaped like a kayak with the paddle. The paddle does come out as well. I also paint the backer to match the letters. Especially important when there are two letters the same! Cut from 3/4" plywood, backer is 1/8" plywood. Cut with #5 MG blade. Finish is Walrus Oil. Pig & rooster is a Steve Good pattern. Their other daughter-in-law dabbles in farming. She has raised heritage chickens and recently pigs. We bought 1/2 a pig for our freezer! Cut from 1/4 ply with #3 MG blade. Paint is acrylic craft paint. Finished with Walrus oil.4 points -

Just had to say, I went and read this entire thread. Great conversation and I love reading about experiences and such. A very enjoyable thread to read. This is what I like about SSV vs say FB. Okay, back to our regularly scheduled programming. Keep it flowing.3 points -
I've cut out one of these not too long after getting into this addiction. Sold it and finally cut out this one. Backer is next on the list soon as I the new printer gets delivered Wednesday. Got 4+ years out of the old one with over 22k printed pages. Switching from HP cartridge to Cannon tank printer. Anyway, still using up the leftover Canadian Cedar. Planed it down to 3/4". Will finish with Watco Danish Natural unless I can think of something better. Used #5 Pegas MGT blades for interior cuts.3 points

I have spent the last couple of weeks making this 14” x 11” Framed Art Panel while I documented nearly every step along the way in photos. I have also spent many hours writing a detailed description of each step to accompany the photos. This work resulted in a 28-page Tutorial I produced and will provide, in PDF format, in a separate post you will find in the Learning Center, Works In Progress & Tutorials, for anyone who may be interested. The Tutorial is a step-by-step documentation of how I go about creating a piece of Scroll Saw Art MY WAY from concept to completion. It includes nine major steps: 1 - Concept, 2 - Creating the Scroll Saw Pattern in Inkscape, 3 – Choosing and preparing the panels, 4 - Scrolling the Cut Panel, 5- Adding Color, 6 – Art Panel assembly, 7 - Adding Logo, 8 - Finishing the Panel, and 9 - Making the Frame. If you want to know more about this project and/or are interested in MY WAY of doing this kind of project, please download the PDF titled: Art by Sam Savitt Interpreted in Wood with a Scroll Saw - A step-by-step Informational Tutorial by FrankEV. (pdf file name is: A step by step Tutorial by FrankEV.pdf) I will aslo post the pattern in Pattern Exchange2 points

This project is my own design, and this finished product was an experiment. I was asked if I could make a small plug in Nite Light with a Dragonfly Shade. I told the lady that I thought I could, and she should get back to me after she returns home up north, and I would show her what I come up with. The panels are 4” square. The Dragonfly Image is from a bundle of Dragonfly SVG files I purchased from Etsy. I added some cattails for background and positioned the image in a surrounding, 1/4" wide, perimeter border. The panels were stack cut face to face out of 5/32” solid core Maple Ply from my, ever growing, pile of cut offs. I mitered one edge of each panel where they will be joined together to form a 90-degree open shade. I cut a triangular piece of the same 5/32” thick material to act as a base for the bottom of the shade. Glue up was a catastrophe. When I do more of these, which I plan to do, I will need to make a jig to hold the panels while being glued along the one mitered edge. And, also, to hold it while gluing in the triangular piece for the bottom. For this one, I wound up using AC glue because there was no way to clamp the parts together. After it was finally assembled, it looked OK and I should have just applied a clear coat to finish it, but I decided I wanted it to be darker, so I decided to Air Brush it a darker color. The first coat I applied looked horrible, so I did a second coat that made it a darker muddy Brown. Now it was too dark so, I added a light purple color just to the Dragonfly. Admittedly not well done, and it needed touch up that I did not do well, as is very noticeable in the photos. OK, after finally applying a Clear Gloss Acrylic protective coating, I glued in, the Orange plastic which I had previously applied a velum sheet to the inside to make translucent. The Nite Light itself is a product from Florida Shells and Gifts.com but I originally ordered them on Esty. They don’t appear on the Florida Shells and Gifts website. However, you can find them by searching Esty for: 3 Pack: Night Light Base Set - Standard On/Off Switch - complete with Bulb and Mounting Clip - DIY Night Light Parts. They are also available as a Single or 6 Pack. They each come with a clip that you can use to attach something (like the shells they sell) to act as a shade. I first tried to cut the shape of the clip out of the bottom triangular piece, but it had no give, so it would not slip on and when I opened it up just a little it became too loose to hold the shade in place. So, I opened the cutout area more, I created a slot for the clip, and then secured the clip to the wood with AC Glue. All in all, when viewed from a distance during the day when unlit, it looks OK. When it is in a dark room, and it is lit, it looks great! The cutting took less than an hour. The assembly and finishing took much longer than I will admit to. Unlit Lit Inside upside down showing the glued in clip Comments and critiques are not just wecomed, I really need to hear them. I’ll post just the Pattern of the Dragonfly panel in Pattern Exchange. However, if you decide to try and make one, you are on your own after that.2 points

I haven't been here for a while, the good weather is drawing to a end and we will be stuck inside soon here in IL. Im still seeing familiar names here so that's a blessing. As many may remember I started scrolling this time last year but took the summer off for my other hobby, today I went to the work shop and blew the dust off the saws and started cutting a pretty simple Steve good cut ..... boy am I rusty! Figured I'd just be able to pick up where I left off 6 months ago ... oh well at least the learning curve won't be as bad this time round Look forward to seeing what works if art you guys have been making and it's good to be back!1 point -
Kevin, that's where "black friday" came from, business was in the red all year, until after thanksgiving, then their sales increased enough to go in the black, good luck going forward and hope you see a lot of black (money), RJ1 point

I stepped away for most of the summer this year as well.. but about a week ago orders for scroll work started coming in and was selling out of scrolled ornaments.. now I'm working my tail off trying to keep up with some clock orders while also almost selling out of some of the ornaments.. weird how each year business is so different.. typically get orders throughout the whole year but it's been pretty slow all summer.. typically I've started picking up business for the holidays around mid Sept.. but it was pretty slow all the way up until just a little over a week ago.. I'm not usually this busy until end of Nov.. but they all just came all at once out of nowhere.. I figured the year was going to be a bust.. but if this keeps up through the holidays I might make up for lost business all in the couple months of the whole year, LOL1 point -

Advice needed!
OCtoolguy reacted to rash_powder for a topic
If you are near the ocean, there is undoubtedly a marina nearby which would mean boats. Boats have canvas tops, covers, and sails; all of which need repaired or replaced from time to time. Find the boat top guy and see what he says/uses; he may even be able to do the work too as a side thing. I'm totally landlocked where I live in eastern North Dakota, and while I would have to drive an hour or two, I know of two boat canvas shops. There has to be near you. Also - while I was deployed to Iraq, the tents were all canvas or that cotton duck stuff. They were water proofed (I don't know why as it never rained in a year there) with a parafin and kerosene mix. Flammable as hell though - a 100 man tent burned up in just a couple minutes. Good luck on the project!1 point -
So this is a big show that's been happening for quite a few years and it's always packed with both vendors and shoppers, even a waiting list to be a vendor... Not much for scroll work there at all.. there was 3 - 4 different vendors with turned pens.. couple vendors with turned bowls and some salt / pepper grinders.. one person have a few CNC signs and cribbage boards. Didn't see much of anything laser work until we got way down to the one end in a hallway ( was at a school ) and to my surprise there was some laser stuff but what was more surprising than that was the fact they allowed him to have his open framed laser engraver set up and was doing custom orders on the spot.. I cannot believe this would be allowed for many reasons besides the smoke that comes off these, LOL.. These kind of machines are supposed to give out special glasses to where in case a laser beam reflects off of something... In my mind this is like taking a cutting torch and cutting metal in a school hallway, LOL.. I do not get how this was allowed at all or even how the vendor even remotely thought it would be acceptable.. not to mention the liability of possibly blinding someone.. I realize for the most part with common sense these are fairly safe to run.. but you just don't know how much common sense a customer or a customers child might have if they seen the thing running.. Now.. if this was a outside event.. Maybe could sort of... nope.. still can't see having a open frame laser running where customers would be able to watch... Now, maybe he never fired the machine? I do not know... I never seen him running it.. but it was there and set up with the computer hooked up and he was messing on the computer doing some graphics work and had some people standing around him.. May have been a customer working on a design and then once agreed maybe he fired up the laser.. I'm not sure but I can say I sure don't think this would be allowed..1 point

Like you, I stepped away for the Summer while I was out fishing, motorcycling, tending to the garden, etc., but in SE WI, it's time to get back into the shop for me as well. I'll be blowing the dust off of the Hawk and get moving on it. I am going to be building some Appalachian Mountain Dulcimers this winter out of reclaimed wood, and will be using the 26" Hawk for the sound holes. I have already installed a re-saw blade on the band saw and have half a truck load of pallet wood (My truck as an 8' bed, so it's a lot of lumber). I am just finalizing my plans and will make the prototype soon. I plan to build just a few of them, if the first one works out and has a good tone. I know pallet wood is going to be hit or miss, so I may use all pallet wood, and spruce sound boards, but I'll see how it goes. Dan1 point

Wow! Melanie AKA Meflick, You have had an interesting few months.! I can't begin to imagine how frustrating it is for your husband. I have had my own ladder adventures but my injuries were not as debilitating as his. The joy you will both experience once you get the shops back together and start making sawdust again will feel so good1 point

Went To A Craft Show Yesterday And..
NC Scroller reacted to zimmerstutzen for a topic
Around here, there is a differentiation between a "vendor show" and a "makers' market" Vendor's shows may be open to makers, but not vice versa. Makers markets are strictly for items made by the seller. Farmer's markets and flea markets around here have become just extensions of Chinese junk stores. An interesting alternative outlet has popped up in an old warehouse near here. The maker rents a set of shelves and keeps it stocked. There are dozens of other makers who have also rented shelves and do the same. The owner of the shop provides security and a cashier. the computerized cashier system prints daily, weekly and monthly accountings for the maker's and funds are paid out accordingly. I was impressed with the variety and quality of the items for sale. There were a few scrolled items, turned items, carvings, hand made soaps, pottery, sculptures, metal work, etc. The place is open TFSS and holiday Mondays and it is a couple blocks off a major US highway, in the center of a cluster of large antique centers. The shop had a pretty good crowd.1 point -

Exactly what I did. While you are trying to fit the bottom piece in the corner joint opens up. One joint at a time just did not work for me. Just thinking of what you said, maybe if you lay the three pieces flat on the bench with the tape attached for each joint, like you do for a box, after applying the clue you should be able to fold up the three pieces into the open shape and the tape should hold all the joints in place. I realy should have thought of that when I did mine.1 point

yes the juried shows are tough to come by these days but were the norm in the older days. Today if you have cash they take you in. I was at 2 shows that I did years ago where 3 crafters were asked to leave in the middle of the show because they had made in China stickers on the items they were selling. I remember this well because one of the so called crafters then went around to many other crafters and stared looking for same labels. when she picked mine up i told her you will never find one here. All made by me by hand. But nice try.1 point -

Like with any tool there is always danger and proper technique and use of tool is always paramount. This is how accidents happen. With all these new cheap lasers hitting the market as well as all these 3D printers these days, people are just not aware of the dangers not only from the beams but the fumes coming off these burning tools. that is why ventilation is a key when setting up in a shop. Just like working on computers all day can effect eye sight so can sharp blasts of light from lasers. I seen people bring scrollsaws and lathes to shows and yes scrollsaws are less dangerous but lathes can get dangerous if you have chips flying around and no barriers. Most shows do not allow these unless properly set up. Me being an outspoken person, I would have said something to them for sure. Just imagine the vendor next to them all day. You want to do custom work then take orders and ship. All part of business. One lawsuit in this lawsuit happy society these days and you lost everything. not good. With that said, good to see craft shows are still hanging around and getting to see other's talents is always what drove me into this in the first place. When I do shows I always loved seeing people's reactions and talking to them to get feedback and input. Those were special qualities I found best when on the circuit because it is instant feedback and knowledge. if doing web sites it is tough because all you have is wait and see if items sell or not and what price points. love seeing the talented artisans.1 point -

Custom Ornament Kit 2023 - Now Available!
Travis reacted to jerry walters for a topic
Travis, Thank you for the opportunity to purchase this kit. For me, this is the first time since I have been scrolling that I am trying to make some ornaments. I also really appreciate your video using inkscape, that in itself was worth the price of the kit. I even purchased the kit for animals. Most of my friends have pets that are part of their family. I have been using inkscape for about a year, but this video has really helped me. I even learned how to add a year to the designs. So far I have made patterns for about 25 of my family and friends. Supposed to get warmer next week so I will be busy. Thanks again Travis. Jerry1 point -

Tyler, I have to say I always enjoy your videos. I learn a lot. I also like how you go against the grain, and I don't mean wood grain. You use different woods, different sizes, which think kinka goes against the grain in the scrolling community. It is not often you see work done on 3/4 inch pine, but I tend to like the looks of it on certain projects. I know 3/4 inch pine for Christmas ornaments for the tree would not be good, but I think it really looked good for the Christmas candles on this video. Jerry1 point -

Hey Barb, thanks for asking, all said, we are doing ok now. We lost the last of our parents when my FIL passed away in mid-March just a few months before his 96th birthday. We ended up deciding unexpectedly to downsize and buy DH family home he grew up in. Plan to build separate workshop and remodel the 56 year old house. We spent several months getting our house we had built 18 years ago cleaned up and out, painted inside and out and decluttered to put on mkt. Got it sold, then moved and closed on purchase of family home all over period of about 4-5 months. He still works full time so I did what I could during the days and then he helped evenings and weekends. Was a long summer. Two weeks after we moved and two days after we closed on purchase, on Sun., Oct. 1st, he was on an A frame ladder trimming tree branches on a large walnut tree. A larger sized branch hit the ground and bounced up and back and took him off the ladder. He ended up with severe heel fractures on both of his feet. Doctor told him he smashed one, and really smashed the other. Then he got pneumonia so they couldn’t do surgery for about 2 1/2 weeks after accident. Fortunately it was an electric chainsaw (gas one was acting up and not working correctly so he switched to electric one). Electric fortunately quit running when he released it and he also was able to throw it away from himself. He’s now a little over 2 weeks out from two significant surgeries on his heels to repair and rebuild them. He is doing well all things considered but he is non-weight bearing on his feet until after the first of the year which means he is in a wheelchair with full lower leg casts for several weeks more. No PT for about two months. Out of work for at least 3+ months. He’s doing well and on road to recovery and we are adapting. Had his two week checkup since surgery last Fri. and so far looks like healing well which is good as feet can be an issue with healing. Stitches out of one, still in one for at least another week. We are thankful it was not worse, no other damage to anywhere else, didnt hurt ankles, just his heels, didn’t hit his head, hurt his back, knees or hips or worse. He’s not one to sit around so that is hard on him, he’s been finding things to do while sitting including playing guitar, piano and carving. All the workshop tools are all packed and stored away unfortunately for the most part so he can’t do much there. I had previously decided to try and make my saw useable in the basement when we moved which is what I got the Festool for portable dust collection. I think we bought it the week or maybe the day or two before the accident and hadn’t gotten it setup. We’ll get there. But that is why I haven’t done anything with my saw in at least 8 months! I have however tried to come here regularly and keep up with what the rest of you are doing. it has helped me mentally but it’s also why I’ve mainly simply been. “liking” posts rather than making many comments.1 point
