  1. This one has taken me a while. Just a few more details and it is done. In this photo, I still have not secured the uprights to the base, so keep that in mind when looking closely. Still deciding on how I want to finish it too. A few broken parts due to some delicate design areas. For one of the buildings, I did not add details cuts as it would have been another weak area. Now that I am getting a handle on these types of projects, I am going to mark up the pattern with my changes to strengthen some of the areas and prevent breakage. I am also thinking I am going to go to a thicker wood vs the 1/4", as I would also like to start adding some of my carving details.

  3. I had to think about this for a while. One thing I am thankful for is our Chickens. They keep up supplied with plenty of fresh eggs. No more having to buy over priced eggs or running to the store because we were out of eggs. So I cut a ornament to hang on the Christmas tree in honor of them.

    Latest Projects

Here is my latest projects. I Loved the bird on a wire so I made one. Its part of several things I donated to my Church to raise some money for a project the Pastor is working on. The Vase with the hert is for my MotherInLaw's Christmas. The Jesus Is a part of the Church Project and has already sold. The Sunflower vase is a project from me and my wife. I made tha vase and she burned the sunflower. The Handymans box is for my son for Christmas. The box (Its a God Box), write down your problems, stick them in the box and let God deal with it. Another one of the Church projects. It is inlayed with Yahweh in Hebrew.

  5. Been a lot of things going on with the family/relationships, so haven't had much time to cut recently. Or desire, if I'm honest with myself. Funny how some things just suck the joy out of other things. But I do try to get out and run the saw every now and then.

    Question re: painting

If you are using acrylic and a brush, just paint it all first with flat white. That will give it a uniform background so you dont need to worry about the grain and all that showing through. What i had the best results with was the cheapo airbrush from harbor freight. You need a compressor though so its not worth it if you dont have one. The airbrush thing was like under $20 or so. It laid down a very nice coat of acrylic. Just used craft stuff from walmart and thinned it with some water.

  8. Just me, but I like a coat of shellac, sand lightly and then paint.

Since I don't waste my time watching any sports I decided to do my new favorite time killer, working in the shop (Scrolling something) Decided on this SG rabbit pattern. Reduced in size by 20% to fit a scrap of 3/8" canary wood I had laying around.

Not sure why I never thought of that for woodwork stuff.. I do this in the auto repair for cleaning out the drive shaft for new U-joints etc. Or steering knuckles for wheel bearings...

The Harbor freight tools come with the triangle sanding attachment. I have one, and I have never found a use for the sanding attachment. My daughter used it once to get into the corners while refinishing some hardwood floors.

Make a flap sander by cutting a slot in a 1/4 inch dowel and insert a stripof sandpaper in it. Mount this in a drill. I find this to be so useful that I keep an old drill with a piece of sanding belt ready to go. I find diamond needle files handy for very tight places. Harbor freight has some cheap but they are fairly coarse. Amazon has a lot of them. I have a set of Japanese finger files that I find very useful. I would do all the sanding before assembly.

I didn't always sand them like this until one day I had a small defect in a project.. and I ended up sanding out the defect.. turned out a lot nicer by sanding it smoother than the saw blade made it and really made a big difference in the overall project.. ever since then I just sand the profile and face and back surface down to 320.. Your work is top notch JT, I was never saying it wasn't.. It's just one of the processes I do because I did it once and that's how I liked it.. and that's how I'm going to continue to do it.. even if it has to be hand sanded without a detail sander.. Obviously some clocks do not have a easy sanding surface as you mentioned.. The saw blade is as good as it get with those type clocks.. but the ones like the prayer clock or similar I sand them.. There is no right or wrong way it's just the way I like to do it.. Does it really "need it" I guess not.. just that little extra I like to do because there is a visible and a feel to the touch difference.

Yeah I start off sanding with like 180, 240 and then usually stop at 320.. Not all about time.. however I don't want to lollygag either but quality does matter too, LOL..

Maybe overkill but I have always sanded the surface and the outer profile down to 320 and sometimes 400 grit paper.. I have yet had a scroll saw blade that leaves that smooth of an surface.. It's not super rough either but not smooth like I make the surface.. FD blades do leave a smoother surface than the Pegas do but not by enough to the point that I wouldn't need to sand the surface down some.. at least that is how I have always done it.. maybe I'm overkill on the sanding.. had many people mention how smooth it feels to the touch.. so I've just always done that.

Almost all the very fine sanding I do, I use a Foredom rotary tool with multiple hand pieces that I can use with pretty much any Dremel or Kutzall burrs/sanding items or others. I bought mine on craigslist but here is an example of it: https://www.woodcraft.com/products/foredom-5200-deluxe-kit?gclid=CjwKCAiA04arBhAkEiwAuNOsIoedfaJnI9NNuSpZ8scwF4ufXxUUWvxhVWNJaHfOJ_fUMKRWAxL2zRoC8qEQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds I also have a multi tool but it is so bulky for some of my fine work that I have trouble using it. My favorite sanders are these EZ lock by dremel: They are like minnie mop sanders...they don't last too long but they have the different grits.

    Bee and Honeycomb

A purchased SVG file that required some work to make the pattern scrollable. The Bee is a separate layer applied on top of the cut panel. The cut panel is 5/32” x 12” x 12” solid core Maple Ply affixed to a 1/4" x 12” x 12” BB Ply Backer. The Bee is also 5/32” solid core Maple Ply. Coloring was done using my Air Brush with Artist Acrylic Air Brush Paints. The assembled panel was protected with multiple coats of a Clear Gloss Acrylic. The Frame is 1/3/4” wide Poplar rails finished with Black Lacquer. Made this as a Christmas Gift for my, soon-to-be ,Grand-Daughter-in-law, who, besides being the mother of my Great-Grand-son, is a Bee Keeper. Comments and critiques always welcome.

So, a Dremel Multi-Max is the same type of tool as what harbor freight calls an Oscillating Multi-Tool. These are pretty large for what I would call detail sanding. I thought detail sanding was something on the order of sanding internal cuts on a Victorian fretwork piece or an intricate ornament.

I use my Dremel multi tool on many of my projects. I found a place on Amazon to buy large quantities of the paper in grits that I use. It works great and has speed control.
