    Christmas gilf

A Christmas gift for the GF's mom (I've known the family for 40 years and been associated for 64 yrs). A fancy Welcome sign. 13" long by 4 1/2" wide. 1/4" top, 1/4" backer; Elm for both. FD Polar #1 for most of the cuts, Polar #2/0 for the bird details. Varathane Black Cherry stain for the letters, three coats rattle can shellace for the top coat. Pattern from the Book Classic Fretwork Scroll Saw Patterns by Patrick Spielman & James Reidle.

  4. Here is another batch of ornaments. All but one, the heart, are made from what I think is spruce. The heart is some mystery plywood I picked out of the cull lumber bin at the Big Orange store. They are finished with Zinsser Bulls Eye clear shellac.

The last of the Reindeer ornaments are cut and almost ready to be hung. Waiting for the sealer to dry on these. Again Thanks to Fab4 for the patterns, much appreciated.

  6. Here are a few of the ones I did for this year. I usually try to pick a few new patterns to give to family and friends. Over the past several years I've given away almost 500 and it's getting more difficult to keep track of who got what so I don't give someone a duplicate.

  7. I almost forgot I made these for friends whose daughter is a firefighter: 1/4" BB painted first and then cut out.

  9. If it was me I'd probably strap the pie to the engine in your car and bake it on the way... You may not want to eat it but there is more importanter things to do.. I really hope you're able to get the saw.. seems like a really nice deal to me so hopefully you'll figure it all out..

"Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus. It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence."

  11. I didn't think I needed a color printer until I started using a scroll saw and tried to follow black lines. Now I'm thinking I might need a color printer.

  12. Used to be patterns in one of the magazines from some years ago.. I wouldn't know what magazine it was or what month issue as i used to get a couple different ones. I remember because I wanted to make one someday and was just thinking about it the other day.. Probably in the creative woodworks and crafts magazine because I didn't get the scrollsaw magazine but a year or two as it was only a quarterly magazine if i remember right.

  13. I believe Carol Rothman has some in one of her scroll saw boxes books. here is an example: https://www.thriftbooks.com/w/creative-wooden-boxes-from-the-scroll-saw-28-useful--surprisingly-easy-to-make-projects_carole-rothman/3293769/item/27703952/?mkwid=|dc&pcrid=77172150940733&pkw=&pmt=be&slid=&product=27703952&plc=&pgrid=1234751854563929&ptaid=pla-4580771612621121&utm_source=bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=Shopping+-+Low+Vol+Scarce+-+%2410+-+%2450&utm_term=&utm_content=|dc|pcrid|77172150940733|pkw||pmt|be|product|27703952|slid||pgrid|1234751854563929|ptaid|pla-4580771612621121|&msclkid=9e4eee2102ba11730a838ba1cbf4677d#idiq=27703952&edition=7974845

  14. Let's just call it facial hair. I saw something similar at a craft fair a couple months ago. Even though I usually don't do a lot of Santa themed projects, I thought that one was unique and it struck my fancy, for some reason. I should've taken a picture. A couple weeks later, a bunch of long, rough sawn pine 1x6's appeared in the scrap pile at work. This project came to mind as the perfect use for them, so I salvaged them and brought them home. I couldn't remember exactly how the craft fair Santa's looked, so I searched Google images, presuming I would stumble onto a number of similar projects I could borrow from. Not so much. So, the design for these guys is mostly made up by me. I drew it out on a piece of paper, then made templates for all of the pieces out of 1/4" ply to make sure I liked the final proportions. This is what I came up with.

  15. Managed to get something completed for once: Fairly happy with the outcome, considering this is basically my second project, first involving any kind of more intricate fretwork. It’s not as clean as I’d like it to be but it looks okay from a distance. Not sure whether it needs a finish or not? It’ll probably be hanging on a wall so barely any touching or such. Maybe a clear coat of spray varnish? I do also have boiled linseed oil available…

  16. Years ago I had seen many scrollsawn ribbon boxes and believe it was here. Does anyone know where I can get the patterns for these and if you do them could you post some examples. I have alot of lumber to use up and would like to do a few different things. Always liked the looks of them. Thanks.

  26. My thought on this is what I like about my hobbies. You will not find them in any retail store. That is anything I make. That is what gives them just that little bit more meaning. This use to be the thought for many but not so any more.

  28. When I was at my daughter's place, I noticed that their stockings were just being hung on a picture hook. Mom to the rescue!!! This is a Kathy Wise design that showed up in my FB feed recently. I cut this as segmentation from one piece of reclaimed elm, from our city's canopy. It is a little more than 1" thick. Used a(many) #7 Precision skip blade(s). Colour provided by watered down Unicorn Spit. There is one major cutting error that I turned into a design choice. This is just waiting for the Osmo satin finish to dry.

  29. I have to check my stash of books because I believe I had this urge once before when they first came out and may have bought some of these books. I will look later today. Also have to go through my projects stash to pick a House Warming gift for my sister and her new home. That should be easy. IT is a great thing to have a lucrative couple of hobbies because we always have gifts available and no need to hit the stores. Or we can just make something to suit the owner easily instead of guessing what they may like.

  32. Rolf, thank you for all your help and suggestions. It is about an 8hr drive from our house but we are planning to meet friends for Christmas and they live 2hrs from where the Saw is located...so now I need to figure out how I can fanegal(sp?) A way to drive those extra 2 hours and back...and bake an apple pie before the Christmas eve party

  41. @OCtoolguy That didn't come out quite right, $275 is less than what it is probably worth. Sounds like a good deal. If I had seen I would probably figured out a way to get it.

    Merry Christmas

I used a smaller blade on the interior cut of the cross. I wasn't very accurate on the lines and I realized that I was pushing a bit. When all the cutting was done, the interior part could be removed, either from the front or the back!!! Certainly made staining it a bit of a challenge!

  50. My Hero is the person pictured in the center picture. He and many others gave us the freedoms that the other two pictures represent. Our Freedom to do as we choose whether it be who we vote for, pray to and live our everyday lives. Those are my hero's.
