  5. I made 90 of these a few years back for my daughters wedding. Gave them out as "favors" at the wedding. I used Red Oak and sprayed with Clear finish. (Sorry the pics are not all that good.)

    Christmas gilf

A Christmas gift for the GF's mom (I've known the family for 40 years and been associated for 64 yrs). A fancy Welcome sign. 13" long by 4 1/2" wide. 1/4" top, 1/4" backer; Elm for both. FD Polar #1 for most of the cuts, Polar #2/0 for the bird details. Varathane Black Cherry stain for the letters, three coats rattle can shellace for the top coat. Pattern from the Book Classic Fretwork Scroll Saw Patterns by Patrick Spielman & James Reidle.

  7. I can't believe that I screwed up so badly this year! I worked my tail off making Christmas gifts for every member of our family, plus I cut out 50 little 3D Reindeer to give away to strangers. Well, All of the Reindeer have been given away, every gift (36 in Total) have been boxed and wrapped, plus I made 2 sets of Gnomes complete with a miniature reindeer mounted on bases. My screw up is that I Completely Forgot to Take Photos of the gifts and Reindeer before they were packaged up! Duh! What a Bonehead Stunt! Dick

  10. I did a baseball pattern for the Ornaments for Charity and test cut for my 2 grand sons and then the boss says what about the other 3. I came up with the attached. My Grand daughter is in woodworking at school and made an Adirondack chair, other GD is in a couple of musicals this year and the other grandson is a D&D fan.

  11. This meant as encouragement to get the saw What a nice intarsia project for the new hawk., an apple pie. Full size not those small ones from Wal-Mart. Ok maybe a scrollsaw MarieC Bobble head as a pie topper ornament. Looking forward for the pictures. .

  12. Here are a few of the ones I did for this year. I usually try to pick a few new patterns to give to family and friends. Over the past several years I've given away almost 500 and it's getting more difficult to keep track of who got what so I don't give someone a duplicate.

    Reindeer

Was trying to make these tiny Reindeer outta basswood. The smaller of the two is made from 3x1/8. The larger from 6x3/32. Using a really inexpensive WEN I bought on Amazon. Neither were easy to cut, the 1/8, I was doubled up trying to get two of everything, but the antlers couldn't take the micro cutting. The 3/32, I doubled up on legs only they came out fine. I got a couple questions for small projects like this: #1 what's a good speed and blade for something like this? #2 where do you purchase wood for crafty stuff like this? This basswood was purchased at hobby lobby. Not really alot to choose from. Thanks in advance, and here's the Reindeer

I think you would have better luck with Baltic Birch plywood. Some of the hobby stores like Michaels carry it in smaller pieces. You can order it online for places like Ocooch wood: https://ocoochhardwoods.com/plywood/baltic-birch-plywood/. I got some from them last month, it is good. Plywood works better because of the layers you do not have to worry grain direction like with solid woods. And Baltic Birch is the best for scrolling because no voids in it. like in cheaper plywood from the big box stores.

    Ornament exchange at work

This one went pretty well. It was supposed to be anonymous as to who you got it from but everybody there knows my work. Our receptionist got it and she was super happy. I've done t a few times and its usually pretty good. I got a cool snowman to put in the Christmas village setup at home and way too much chocolate. haha. One of the guys got a clear glass ball and filled it with his custom spice mix he uses for grilling. That was pretty cool.

  25. And a very Merry Christmas to you Rick! I don't do iMac or Inkscape and thus will be of no help whatsoever with your stated problem. But I do want to see the Kool Gnome Pattern. So here's hoping somebody can/will help you. And please post it when it is done. Thurman

  26. Probably too busy of a time of the year for people to worry an exchange. I can see that.

  27. Beautiful Ken, I hope the receiver appreciated all the work put into the ornament. We have had a ornament or two exchange here but people really weren't interested. We had exchanges at another group and instead of a wood ornament I sent him a stained glass angel I made for him along with a stand for her to sit on. Well the wife snagged the angel and poor hubby got the stand................................LOL

  33. That is a beaut. Maybe one these year we should have one of those on here. Be kinda fun. But they are a lot of work to organize and coordinate. I participated in one a year or two ago on another woodworking forum. I think maybe the person I exchanged with was not real excited about me giving him a 3D cut Christmas nut cracker....

  34. Well I have been busy the last few days. I finally got the top arm out, I had to drill out the hardened socket head bolt that went through the bottom bearing as the nut threads were stripped. There is an access hole for a hex key but that took about 45 minuets to get out, that's hard steel. The bearings (6202-z) seem fine and are readily available under $5 each but the bushings on the other hand aren't available. Checked with local machine shops and they are too busy to take on a small job. Got hold of an online shop that quoted me $250 each (2 maybe 4 if lower ones are the same) that's $500 -$1000 +tax and shipping. I reassembled the saw minus the upper arm and found no slop or excess vibration even on top speed. So hopefully at least the bottom end is OK. The bushing stub that engages the barring is 8thou under size. Touched base with my local machine sales Co to see if they had any good used lathes in. They said a 2 year old King Mini Lath is coming in this week which I can have for $500. Looks like my only option, if indeed it is in good condition. I'm sure I will find a use for it after the saw is back up and cutting.

  36. Well done Brian. I always paint the backer to match the letters. This certainly helps when there are two of the same letter.

  37. Here is another batch of ornaments. All but one, the heart, are made from what I think is spruce. The heart is some mystery plywood I picked out of the cull lumber bin at the Big Orange store. They are finished with Zinsser Bulls Eye clear shellac.

  39. Good morning to everyone. This is in reference to my inkscape go wacky on me, I am going to try to show you what my screen looks like when I try to open a new or previous page. I am also going to try to paste a message that I put on the other scroll saw sites. I wish you all a VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS !!! Hi to you all. Can anyone help me with my adventures with inkscape? Full disclosure, I don't know a **** thing about computers and this new iMac is running me through the ringer. Since I was able to do some very minimum work with the program, such as change pattern lines to RED and do some text work for childrens puzzles, I'm guessing that I hit the wrong button somewhere. I did all my work on an 8 1/2 x 11 layour and now when I try to work on a new piece, teh correct size paper outline comes up, but there is a 6 x6 box with red lines from corner to corner, and the program won't let me perform any of the work I would like to do. I'm sorry if this explanation as clear as mud, and I thank you all for any help that is given. Rick

  40. I don't know if the laser printers are the same as the inkjet for the ink when buying a new one but i'm thinking mine was.. they say a new printer only has a small sample packs of ink to get the printer running out of the box but after you buy a replacement they do last longer so that's why I'm thinking that. My printer barely made it through one busy holiday season of printing packing / receipts etc. for my orders.. but the replacement went over a year at least.. maybe two years I don't exactly remember when I bought this.. Thinking I got it in fall of 2020.. I've replaced the original one and then another finally died and this fall I put another new one in.. I buy the XL ones so they are larger.. But I also do a lot of printing.. But, I was changing ink in my old Epson inkjet about once or twice a month one of another of the colors would go empty.. and it wouldn't work at all if one was empty the whole printer wouldn't use just black or whatever so it was ridiculous.. I was buying about 8 sets of XL cartridges a year with that thing and that's like $75 a pop..
