  2. They last a long time. I made the train in this photo more than 40 forty years ago. My granddaughter is the train's third owner. This is a photo of the original batch of trains sitting on my workbench. The rest of the trains went to nieces and nephews. Some of this are still being played with.

I made these for my granddaughters for Xmas. A big Thank you to grandpa - Paul for making the pattern for me. I changed it in a couple of spots, hope I did it justice.

  5. These are the ornaments I made this year for my two daughters and my niece and nephew, also needed a gift my Lions Club. They were resized from patterns in the library made in cherry.

  6. Almost done. I have to profile and final sand the animals and then finish with Raw Linseed Oil. This will be a present for my grandson's first birthday.

I have cut several of these and used a laser engraver for the text. Nothing very intricate but a very meaningful item.

  10. I made this for a different granddaughter and must admit I love it! I can't stop playing with it! Simple but very entertaining! ( my wife is playing with it for the video, she is not my granddaughter!) I got this one from a book, but Steve Good also has an acrobat pattern. acrobat.mp4

    Carved Fretwork Cat

Well, it's probably been two years since I posted anything I made. This is a pattern from Scroll Saw Woodworking and Crafts, Fall 2008. Since day the day I received the magazine I said I was going to try this pattern. Let's see, that's 2023 minus 2008, subtract, carry the 1, about 15 years ago. Dick Miraglia was featured in that issue and did a fine job explaining the steps. I was a little hesitant about some of the steps but decided I could always use the firewood if it doesn't work out. Grabbed a maple slab, cut to size, used a trim router to lower the perimeter, then the fun started. The scrolling was straightforward but the maple made is slower than I'm use to. The trickiest part was carving/shaping the face. Not too bad, but I'd tackle it a bit different next time. The detailing was fast and fun. A big shout to @dickmira for the great article. I'll be doing some others as soon as I create some patterns. Cheer everyone!

    Looking for a Tutorial

I'm looking for a tutorial for inkscape that will show me how to make (do?) letters within letters similar to this image (downloaded from Schrollsawvillage). I'm okay with inkscape, I just can't figure how to do this one. So if you've done a tutorial or know where one exists, I would certainly appreciate a link. Merry Christmas!!! Edit: After putting this thread in here, I did realize that it should probably be in Pattern Making.

  21. Robert, totally awesome. I am working on a design for some trains too. I am trying to contact someone, I made trains for her son over 40 years ago. Not sure if she still has them or not, I would love to get photos since it was something I did in high school. Earlier this year, a former girlfriend sent me a photo of some hearts I cut on a band saw and painted red for Valentine's Day my Senior year. She kept them and sent me a photo nearly 45 years later. It totally sucked, so I did an intarsia of an owl in a tree for her.

  22. Managed to get something completed for once: Fairly happy with the outcome, considering this is basically my second project, first involving any kind of more intricate fretwork. It’s not as clean as I’d like it to be but it looks okay from a distance. Not sure whether it needs a finish or not? It’ll probably be hanging on a wall so barely any touching or such. Maybe a clear coat of spray varnish? I do also have boiled linseed oil available…

  23. THANK YOU sooo much Travis for hosting THE VILLAGE and providing us with a great "family" to share all of our work. Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year to you and your family Rick

  24. This little guy started life as a Sue Mey pattern, number NW4195 JOY GNOME I cut a tree about 1/8 inch larger than the original pattern to place behind the Gnome tree, and then I glued on a piece of silver glitter paper. I then decided to make our little friend 2 dimentional buy putting a second layer of wood on the hat, gloves, and shoes. I finished it off with a string of "Rice Lites" that I bought on AMAZON, I used hot glue to keep them in place, turned on the switch and viloa. So, Ann Marie decided that he should be on smething seasonal and off to her quilting room she went, you can see the results, it looked great. Well Ann Marie showed it to one her friends, and it sold on the spot. I'm trying to finish another one quickly, because we are hosting all the little ones for a Christmas Party on Sunday afternoon and we know they will get a big kick out of them. MERRY CHRISTMAS to all my VILLAGE family. Hopefully, you will get the chance to share some times with the ones you love. Rick

    Canary wood and alder

Ron Johnson has a game in Bragging Rights using Canary wood. I’ve made a few birdhouse ornaments with Canary and the wood sure is beautiful and easy to work with. Also seems like you don’t need to put a finish on it. I’ve had a board for over 10 years and it looks as fresh as the ornament that I just finished. Also, I had a 2x8x12 piece of alder lying around. I’ve never used alder and find that it’s easy to work with and in my opinion, very pretty in a plain sort of way. I made a Penny Drop game using the bandsaw box method, finished with a few coats of shellac. If there is anyone looking for different woods, these two are certainly worth a try.

    Soccer Plaque

I must be slipping or something ( part timers ) Pattern by Steve Good ( I added the name and shaker pegs ) and the hidden hanger idea. Two layers of 1/2 BB plywood ( for a total of 1" ) , Most of the cutting was FD Polar #1 the outside curves were cut with FD Polar #3. I cut the top interior pieces first ( including the holes for mounting the pegs ) then laminated the two layers using polyurethane glue. Then cut the outside. Not shown, I drilled counter sunk pilot holes for 2" screws from the back of the pegs, so in effect they are steel reinforced. I used the screw from the back of the peg for a hanger at work ( blow gun at the assembly table, daily rough use for 20 years, I hate things that break )

Looks pretty good. The curves in the fingers are NOT jagged. The forearm curves and hair are also smooth. This a really nice project.

Thank you, and I am thankful. Definitely one of the things money can’t buy. A few days ago my wife, Connie, and I put in the military foot marker at her daddy’s grave. It reminded me that sharing life’s experiences, big and small for 4 decades is priceless.

  46. I did a baseball pattern for the Ornaments for Charity and test cut for my 2 grand sons and then the boss says what about the other 3. I came up with the attached. My Grand daughter is in woodworking at school and made an Adirondack chair, other GD is in a couple of musicals this year and the other grandson is a D&D fan.

  48. Here are a few of the ones I did for this year. I usually try to pick a few new patterns to give to family and friends. Over the past several years I've given away almost 500 and it's getting more difficult to keep track of who got what so I don't give someone a duplicate.
