Well, it's probably been two years since I posted anything I made. This is a pattern from Scroll Saw Woodworking and Crafts, Fall 2008. Since day the day I received the magazine I said I was going to try this pattern. Let's see, that's 2023 minus 2008, subtract, carry the 1, about 15 years ago. Dick Miraglia was featured in that issue and did a fine job explaining the steps. I was a little hesitant about some of the steps but decided I could always use the firewood if it doesn't work out. Grabbed a maple slab, cut to size, used a trim router to lower the perimeter, then the fun started. The scrolling was straightforward but the maple made is slower than I'm use to. The trickiest part was carving/shaping the face. Not too bad, but I'd tackle it a bit different next time. The detailing was fast and fun. A big shout to @dickmira for the great article. I'll be doing some others as soon as I create some patterns. Cheer everyone!12 points

Harbor Freight Foot Switch
Juan Rodriguez and 2 others reacted to smitty0312 for a topic
My foot switch died a couple weeks ago, I can't scroll saw without it, I like to have 2 hands on my work at all times, I was ready to go back to Harbor Freight to purchase a new one ($14.99), but thought I should at least take the old one apart to take a look, to my amazement it was very dirty & full of cobwebs, after fiddling with the wires inside IT NOW WORKS!! The circuitry is very simple inside. I have the monetary foot switch which is pushing 10yrs old. I saved myself $15 bucks. God Bless Smitty 414600630_7106656149427181_4132962418010634119_n.mp43 points -

Kevin, that lo-profile switch is the Wen. I love how thin it is. Very little pressure to keep it depressed.2 points

Thank you all for the welcome! Sorry it took me a while to get back here, this is a busy time (which I'm sure you all know). Update: I now have two Hawk 226VS scroll saws. I thought I got a good deal on my first one (obviously very lightly used for $275), but I found an absolute steal! A 226VS still sealed in the original box, never been opened, for $250. I don't "need" a second scroll saw, but I couldn't pass up that deal! I called Bushton this morning to find out how old the machines are and to see if parts are still available - the first one was manufactured in 1996 and the "new" one was manufactured in 2000. The lady I talked to said that I stole both of those machines at the price I paid. Both machines are fully supported, parts easily available. Here is the stand I made for the first machine. It's at a height comfortable to use while sitting, tilted forward to make scrolling less stressful on my neck & shoulders. The saw is not on a shelf, it sits in grooves (dadoes) that I routered into the top of the 2x4's. I'm planning on adding shelves or drawers in the bottom once I figure out what sizes I need. I'm going to make a stand for the second machine and bring that one in the house so I can use it when the shop is too hot (always in Texas summers) or too cold (occasionally in winter, today being one of those cold days). Again, thanks for the welcomes, info, and tips!2 points

I had one that I bought from Harbor Freight that was a switch on/off rather than the one you have to constantly keep your foot on back when I had my deWalt.. I sold it with the saw as all the other saws I've had came with a switch, but they are all the type that you have to keep your foot on. The ones that come with the hawks and the hegner are a very low profile one and i like them a lot better than the taller one that came with my EX so I swapped the EX one with one from the Hawk i sold a few years back.. Harbor Freight had both the on/off or the one you have to keep your foot on back when i got mine but that was many years ago so i don't know what they have now.. both was the same price I think but just depending on what one you want. The one the Hawk and hegners come with have a plug on them that is easy to plug in a T plug for my Seyco Vac, Saw, and my hour meter so they all run off the foot switch.. Not sure how much Hawk / Bushton or Hegner gets for their switches.. those are the ones I personally like.. because of the low profile.. I think if I had to get a taller one I'd rather have the on/off style..2 points

If you have a Harbor Freight near you, they have them there for about $15. I have used them on other saws, and put one on my mom's Sakura scroll saw. They are a must have. Dan2 points

I recommend a foot switch. Most use them. And I believe most use a deadman switch, foot on machine on foot off machine turns off. I use to, but a few months ago I tried a latching step on/ step off switch. I tried because I have been cutting a picture big enough that I have to stand to manipulate the piece of wood. Now that I am use to it I prefer it. You plug the saw into the switch and the switch is plugged into the wall receptacle.2 points

Glad you was able to get this.. Now I hope you love it as much as I love my Hawk saws.. You got a heck of a deal on it..2 points

Looks good. Now if the pie was cherry instead of apple it would be better. Thanks for the pics. Enjoy your new toys, food and the new year.2 points -
Ray, thanks so much ...just one question... is it the type that to keep it on, you keep your foot on it, and as soon as you take your foot off, it turns off? (Did I use too many commas?)1 point

Drive it like you stole it! Because you did. Wen has a great foot switch on Amazon for about $12. I have one and love it. When my other 2 switches quit, I'll buy 2 more.1 point

Congratulations to all of you "old codgers" out there with decades of marital bliss in your life. This was our 45th Christmas together. I've never thought of a commemorative ornament. That's a neat idea. I'll keep that in mind.1 point -
I use a foot switch on my EX 21 that came with the saw when I bought it. .... I think you would call it a step on/off switch which I like. Where did you get yours?1 point

Good advise using clear packing tape. works foor me.1 point -
I've put clear packing tape over acrylic and it almost eliminated the melting. Extra support, whether stacking acrylic or using thin plywood, I'd also suggest.1 point

Welcome Liz from So. California. I look forward to seeing what you find to make with that saw. It's a great saw if it's of the newer vintage. If you have time, post a couple of pics of it.1 point

Liz, I'm Jerry from Colorado. No kidding, you have come to the right place. Lot of help here and you will keep learing. With your background you will have no trouble with the scroll saw. From what I hear seamtreesses make great scrollers. I used to watch my wife sew and picked up a few tricks I could do with the scroll saw. One other thing, scrolling is verrrrry addictive as others have said. You will find that with other chores you have to do, you can hardly wait so you can get to scrolling. There is always something to learn, something new. Welcome to the Village, you will be happy here and you will not get bored. Jerry1 point -
