  2. An Alex Fox basket #C78. I used 1/4” Baltic Birch plywood 10” square. Cut on the Pegas Scroll Saw using Pegas #1 MGT blades. After sanding with a Mac Mop, two coats spray Lacquer Clear Gloss with a light sanding between coats. Comments welcome.

In AZ, I buy camp stove fuel. It's close to 100% alcohol. It might be available in Kaliforny.

  7. My pegas came with one of the Seyco magnetic mats. I hated it. Wood slides much better on waxed steel or cast iron.

  8. Funny you asked. I just drilled through one this evening because I wanted to screw it to my wall to hold my fine files. It was easy-peasy to drill but was kind of a pain trying to get the the shavings out of the holes. Not sure what it would be like to saw...

I have dissolved shellac in 91% rubbing alcohol. Seems to work just fine, so I imagine it would also take off dried shellac. Tom

    Book box

I had an idea this morning. Good use for small cut offs. Since I have been making so many projects with little books in them.

  11. Rustic Deer Silhouette With Hunting Theme This is a newer Steve Good design. I trimmed the pattern out and attached it to my material with clear packing tape (clear packing tape helps lubricate the blade and reduce burn marks) The main scroll work is 1/4 inch material and the backer board that includes the antlers is 1/2 inch material. I drilled all of my pilot holes with my amazing @seycoscrollsaw Scrollers drill I then cut everything out on my @deltamachinery scroll saw with number 5 ultra reverse tooth blades (scrolling took around an hour as I was also messing with the laser) After the pieces were cut, I removed the waste and sanded both the front and back of the pieces with 180 @klingsporswoodworkingshop sandpaper in my vibrating palm sander (an orbital sander would be too aggressive to sand scroll work) Then it was time for staining, and I used a light @minwaxusa stain and a darker stain to add some color difference. After that dried, I glued the pieces together with Medium Grade CA Glue. And after that dried, I gave the piece several coats of @rustoleum clear gloss for a finish and protection. I made this for a good friend who is an avid outdoorsman. Great way to spend a morning in the workshop. . . #ArtisanPirate

  16. This is so true. I do not know the project you refer to but is it possible to use a card scrapper or other small fine scrappers to remove not only the shellac but will better than sand your final piece. In the turning world when people do segmented work they do not sand mixed woods. they use sharp tools to remove tool marks and also get down to final size and shape. Good luck

The big box stores here in the Republic of Texas also do not have denatured alcohol. So how are we to make our own shellac? BTW Ray @OCtoolguy,the alcohol dissolves the pigment from paduak. You do not have paduak sawdust in your maple, you have paduak pigment in your maple. Using alcohol to remove the shellac will only dissolve more paduak pigment and make the problem even worse. Regrets, but I do not have a solution to how to get the paduak pigment out of the maple.

    Carved Fretwork Cat

To be honest, Dan, I was extremely busy with the holiday festivities and all of the visiting family staying with us that I did not have any opportunities to look at the recent forum postings. I was very pleasantly surprised this morning to see your post featuring the tremendous carving job you did on the tiger. I have seen many carved fretwork tigers from different woodworkers following the instructions in this article and have helped many with further instructions. However, your tiger is one of the best jobs and I loved it. Keep at it and it does get easier. Have a great new year to you and all my colleagues on Scrollsaw Village, Dick Mira

Just out of curiosity, I checked my local Florida big box stores to see what the current price for alcohol was. Neither Lowes nor Homedepot have any. What is up with that, I wonder? Ace Hardware has it in 5-gallon cans, and I can buy it in gallons on Amazon for $30. I need to check the price for Everclear.

Use 91% isopropyl alcohol if you can get it. Everclear (95% alcohol) is perfect though expensive. You can buy Everclear at a liquor store. There are lots of others that may work, but they may damage your project. Everclear is a brand name for rectified spirit, also known as grain alcohol or neutral spirit, produced by the American company Luxco. It's made from grain, typically corn, and bottled at various alcohol-by-volume (ABV) levels.

Everclear = moonshine. Homemade distilled liquor with a proof of close to 200 (i.e., close to 100% alcohol)

  26. My Mom was a great pie maker...I should have learned from her, and so was an Aunt I had. She use to come and care for us, a couple of times, when my Mom was in the hospital she was an amazing cook and baker, My brothers and I never had a complaint when we were told Aunt Amanda was coming to help us...The crust is the secret. My wife never spent time to master it. I wish I would have. .

  32. Are you all aware that Home Depot now sells small stills? Maybe you could make your own alcohol for future projects and party enjoyment since the result is Not Denatured. (DIY Ever Clear!!). I guess the alternative is to have a woodworking buddy in Arizona meet you at the State Line for a picnic and exchange. Charley

Diluted white vinegar will dissolve shellac. I use it for cleaning up brushes, containers & such when applying shellac. I've never used it to strip a finish, so I don't know how well it will work. Put some shellac on a scrap piece of wood and give it a try before using it on a project.

  37. Yes, it's called a "dead man" switch. Because if you die while at your saw, you're foot will more than likely slide off the switch and turn off whatever machine you are operating. Works great around explosives too. If you have a TNT vest wrapped around you and you take your thumb off the button, "DEAD MAN"!

  40. They last a long time. I made the train in this photo more than 40 forty years ago. My granddaughter is the train's third owner. This is a photo of the original batch of trains sitting on my workbench. The rest of the trains went to nieces and nephews. Some of this are still being played with.
