Well after the Flu it got cold. 2nd coldest since living in Mississippi that I remember and a bunch of icy roads. So what do you do? You go out to the cold shop that has frozen water bottles in it and make a birdhouse . I did turn on my sunflower heater on the propane tank. i saw a photo of this birdhouse so I thought I would make one.12 points

Decided to try cutting acrylic and it worked out well. Although this was 3mm, A4 sheet of acrylic but it felt like cutting 6mm, you had to let the blade do the work. I used a #3 Niqua blade and had no problems with any melting that I had anticipated. So all in all quite a good experience. Not easy to photograph though as it's so reflective.6 points

Cobra and the Grizzly
Alexander Fadeev and 3 others reacted to JessL for a topic
Finished cutting this Cobra for my husband. Looking for a more detailed coiled cobra but this one is "similar" to the Shelby Cobra emblem, which is ok with him. Just waiting on some more Danish oil to give it a good drink. Almost finished with the roaring bear. Making this one for a Bear guard friend of ours. He spends his summer walking out it the woods with different scientist, biologist, geologist, etc, carrying a shot gun looking for danger. In case your curious, he has not had to kill a bear, but has seen many.4 points -

Have you ever used a scanning service to scan the pullout patterns that come with Scroll Saw Woodworking & Crafts magazine? I have had most of my scroll saw books scanned and would like to have the pullout patterns scanned.2 points

Jim, where did you see this ad? Was it in the magazine its self? @Rolf and @Denny Knappen I think you both do cutting for the magazine, do you know anything? I do know that it has been harder and harder to find the magazine on newsstands anywhere in my area. Lowes and Home Depot carry very few magazines any more. The only place locally that still carries many magazines is the one remaining big box book store we have in the area.2 points

Three weeks in the tool hospital
OCtoolguy and one other reacted to barb.j.enders for a topic
That's what they did a number of years ago. Took my DeWalt in, got it back & took it home. Tested it and drove back to the service centre. A week later, the sent me a brand new one! Now I have an extra table top!2 points -
I know nothing about the buffer. I bought the grinder two years ago at Rockler and got a deal and it was only about $110. Looks like it is $199 now which is about the same price as the buffer. Looks like grizzly has one for $109.2 points

Dave, another question....what do you think of the Rikon slow speed buffer https://pitexo.com/product/rikon-8-low-speed-buffer-1750-rpm/?gclid=Cj0KCQiA-62tBhDSARIsAO7twbaWE5-sBO40PAHb5Hw_uJCtiFvlnCZ1z4Pl84vkkv3_xSHU7k2r-EIaAvfuEALw_wcB or are the arms too long to put the adapers on? They seem to be less expensive than the grinders. Also, note @rjweb question a couple of messages earlier in this thread. Thanks!2 points

Marie, the “grinder with the flex drum sanders” I use is an 8” Delta or Rikon. I don’t recall specifically which and it is presently packed away as we moved and await building a new shop. The main thing I was referring too is that i would want a larger grinder and that it be variable speed. The larger sanding sleeves and variable speed gives you more sanding ability than the smaller Foredom. When I researched this when I did mine, the brand of the grinder didn’t seem to be an issue. Variable speed is key and one that is sized to take the flex drum sanders.2 points

I just got a renewal notice and I'm having second thoughts about renewing. I like the magazine but there is just not enough new ideas to make it worth the cost. It would probably make me want to renew if they announced that they were going to make all the patterns available for download. That would be great.2 points

Just saw an ad stating that SSW&C would not be on newsstands beginning with the summer issue. Wish them all the luck publishing in today's market for magazines.1 point -
I find it you put masking tape on the front and back of the sheet it helps to stop the melting effect.1 point

Three weeks in the tool hospital

I bet it is a wood chip that got stuck in the shaft mechanism that lets the head ride up and down. Simple fix.1 point -
For me personally, I have never found the slowest speed on my grinder to be too fast as I did on the Guinevere. However, I have found the ability to adjust my speed up or down as I can with a variable speed versus a one speed only grinder to be beneficial. Just as with my scroll saw, I find it good to be able to adjust my speed depending on the project. Sometimes I need to cut slower, sometimes I can bump up the speed, it depends on the type of project, it’s detail, the wood being used, how thick,etc.1 point

1750RPM is about as low as is possible with the typical induction motors used in typical bench grinders.1 point

Very nice. It reminds me of a pattern of a man growing old at various times in his life.1 point -
That's amazing to me that they was able to fix this.. You sure they didn't just replace with another saw? I say this because I've seen literally hundreds of post over the years about the service centers not being able to figure out the problem.. and many times they end up just replacing the saw.1 point

Melanie, so I did some checking of 8" grinders. The Rikon, Bauer, and delta variable speed grinders only go to 2000 RPM as their slowest setting, Whereas, the Rikon slow one speed grinder is 1750. Since I am a newbie to the sanders, would you still want the variable speed or go to the Slower one speed Rikon. What do you think of this Rikon buffer? https://www.woodcraft.com/products/8-low-speed-buffer?gclid=Cj0KCQiA-62tBhDSARIsAO7twbYDN8IdQ8saSMpthyUl6DYopdQTle6Wnq7H5tXrXgoHEVofWTyEeAcaAiafEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds1 point

Nice job Brenda. The only time I cut acrylic, it was for oval blanks for a “doggie bank” I made a great niece a couple years ago. No where near as detailed as your handsome dog here.1 point

Gene, What was the cause of the thumping noise? Parts? Which one(s)? Adjustment(s)? Again, which ones inquiring minds want to know.1 point

They did fix it. The problem was a thumping noise near the head. Not to the rear as is most common.1 point

Latest Projects - Scroll Saw Challenge
Peter Lampman reacted to alexiv11 for a topic
Good afternoon everyone. My name is Alex. We are a family of refugees from Ukraine. In Ukraine, my hobby was carpentry. I also kept bees. I really wanted to make something for the house in the shape of a hexagon like a honeycomb. I decided to make a watch. My family really liked this clock; it set the style in our kitchen. When we were getting ready to leave Ukraine, my wife wanted to take them with us as souvenirs. I told her that she didn’t need to do this. I'll try to make the same ones in the new place. We didn't know then where we would end up. With God's help we ended up in Quebec. I recently made a clock and it reminds us of our home in Ukraine, as if we were at home.1 point
