A cute little angel
JonH and 13 others reacted to heppnerguy for a topic
Today I finished a pattern of this little angel that I thought was too cute to not cut. This is the second project I cut this month and it looks like I just might be finally spending some time in my shop other than Christmas presents. I hope you like this as much as I did when I saw the pattern. This is also the first oval frame I have ever attempted. A little bit of a struggle but best of all a good learning experience Dick heppnerguy14 points -

A lot of you may or may not have noticed that I have not been on line for some time and also have not posted any of my work. This is because I did not post any of my Christmas projects and have had almost continual company or work to catch up on outside and have not been in my shop very much. We have a great neighbor who has a birthday coming up on Feb 3rd and I wanted to make her something that seems to interest her a lot. In her home she has a long haired cow that she took a photo of and had it enlarged and framed and hanging on the wall of their home. In fact she has two different ones of this type of cow. So I ran across this pattern and cut it for her. Dick heppnerguy7 points -

Well after the Flu it got cold. 2nd coldest since living in Mississippi that I remember and a bunch of icy roads. So what do you do? You go out to the cold shop that has frozen water bottles in it and make a birdhouse . I did turn on my sunflower heater on the propane tank. i saw a photo of this birdhouse so I thought I would make one.2 points

For those who have/had blade slippage Steve Good addresses this issue in his newsletter today. He also has a video you can watch to help you understand more clearly.2 points

Edge jointing on the table saw
OCtoolguy and one other reacted to Bill WIlson for a topic
I've used these for many years. They have their limitations and I'm considering alternatives that are a little more functional, but these have worked for me. I attach them to a strip of plywood that has a factory edge. https://www.grizzly.com/products/woodstock-board-straighteners/d31192 points -

Thanks Judy. That is timely for me as I am experiencing slippage recently. I had seen that video before and have a couple of the quick clamp renewal kits on hand. But it has been a while since I have needed to do this and it seems it might be time to do it again.2 points

Can't remember where I saw this tip but decided to try it out. These clamp on straight edge guides come in 24 36 and 48 inch lengths and if you knock the roll pin out of the handle and turn it in the opposite direction (UP) to clear the saw's table it makes a handy way to straighten the edge of a board. I did have to grind the plastic tab on the right front end to have it flush with the fence. Clamp it on the board, run it along the fence and trim the other side straight & works like a champ.1 point

Edge jointing on the table saw
OCtoolguy reacted to JTTHECLOCKMAN for a topic
I use those clamps he is showing for gluing boards together edge to edge to make wider boards. They work great for that. For straightening an edge I will clamp a straight edge or even use one of those clamps but would run a skil saw or circular saw as some call them, over it and do it outside. Makes quick work of getting a straight edge on one side.1 point -

Beautiful work! I was wondering what type of wood you would be using for the other set of pieces? Or will you be staining them a lighter color? Mike1 point -

I would not even enter. On a trip once when my grandson went with us, I taught him how to play chess. He beat me every time. I think he was watching me and thinking I must have be trying to teach him how not to play chess.1 point -

Another option is to take a scroll saw class if one is available near you. We have a Woodcraft store in our area that offers various woodworking classes, scroll sawing being one of them. Just a thought.1 point

Peachtree Woodworking on line. 24 inch ProGrip straight edge. There's other companies that make cheaper ones. I should have bought a longer one so it could also be adjusted down if needed. Stuck with 24" and it's "exactly" 24" when some plywood project sheets are a tad larger. I've seen people lay a board next to a 48" level and ride the fence holding them together. I usually keep a straight bit mounted on my router table to joint shorter pieces. What ever is the easiest1 point

Jimmy where did you get that? I have a jointer which I do not like and honestly it is a machine that scares me. So, I would like to replace it with something else. For my big pieces I use my track saw but for smaller pieces, I hate to hall out the track saw for that. Thank you ahead of time.1 point

yes. The art part of this hobby allows us to change thickness of wood at our choice. I have taken part of patterns and used them on other pieces. Using thinner wood. Me. Mark Eason1 point

Awesome!! Those Hawk Ultras are good saws.. not much issues with those.. the earlier saws yes there were some issues with those saws for sure.. even though those issues are what I would say kind of rare anyway considering the thousands of them out there.. I think Hawk really made a lot of improvements in quality and reliability starting with the Ultra..1 point

That is a great one Dick. There is a very popular picture of a long haired steer, that I seen hanging on many walls when lookng a pictures of homes for sale. In fact my daughter has the picture hanging in her home above one of the fireplaces. Your neighbor is going to love this one.1 point -

Wow Bob. I take most anything if it's free. If for no other reason than the challenge of making it work. I guess that's why I have such a large collection of crap. Sigh, I'm a hoarder.1 point

I'm going to cheat a little on this reply This was not done last year but rather 38+ years ago after I started this great hobby I may be off topic a bit, so I apologize for that When I came out of rehab(drugs and alcohol, the good old days) I needed something to keep me busy Long story short, I found a scrollsaw which I knew nothing about and bought it when I saw that the pattern book had Christmas ornaments. I'll make some ornaments, have my son and daughter paint them. Then I saw this little guy and just had to try and cut him out of wood. He's precious to me and it was a great moment when I finished him. (see the pun there....LOL) So, he's sitting there as I was one day, wondering if I made the right decision with rehab and this life changing time for me, my wife, my kids, my job, friends... Well, I can honestly say that this little guy and I both agree that it was and has been the best decision I ever made in my life. 38 +years sober and drug free and it hasn't been all that bad. Still married to a wonderful girl who could have easily walked away but she never did.1 point
