A cute little angel
JonH and 3 others reacted to heppnerguy for a topic
Today I finished a pattern of this little angel that I thought was too cute to not cut. This is the second project I cut this month and it looks like I just might be finally spending some time in my shop other than Christmas presents. I hope you like this as much as I did when I saw the pattern. This is also the first oval frame I have ever attempted. A little bit of a struggle but best of all a good learning experience Dick heppnerguy4 points -

Thanks @Foxfold for the pattern! I reduced it, which meant there was a "design" choice made while cutting. This was done as a quick cut instead of working on my tulips project because I received my Pegas blade chuck in the mail. This is about 7/8 thick walnut. Cut with #5 precision skip. One coat if shellac. There are some other issues but hubby didn't see them and they can't be seen from the front.4 points -

beginner Scroller need advice!!!
barb.j.enders reacted to Me and my buddy for a topic
As my ranking says i'm a nooby scroller so if there are any beginner tips I should know please tell me because i'm just a kid. I also made a present for my friend it's the green bay packers logo me and my uncle made it because it's easy it's just a g with green behind it. I love scrolling it's so fun!1 point -
If I'm not mistaken, that is the air blower bellows. If you remove it the noise may go away. With a bit of tinkering and maintenance it may service your needs. And aquarium pump will work for an air blower.1 point

I think those Bosch blades are made by Olsen.. or at least some of them are.. Many brands are just rebranded Olsen blades. There used to be a Vermont Castings brand and those things was the worst blade I've ever seen. Not sure if they are still around or not..1 point

I've seen those Bosch blades at Lowe's, but never tried them. They are kinda big. If you can find some Olson blades I think you may have better luck.1 point -

Welcome from Pennsylvania. Nice job on your logo! The most important thing to remember is to have fun and find projects that you enjoy cutting. Feel free to ask questions and you will get plenty of answers here.1 point -
First off, Welcome, this is a great place for new scrollers!. Second, you did a great job on the Packer logo! We all started, like you with beginner projects. And when you have questions, ask them, theres decades of experience here and everyone here is great and we are more than happy to help anyone who has questions. Also ,tell us more about yourself, your saw and such. all of us here can help even more if we know what you're using. Let the sawdust fly!! Chris1 point

Blade slippage
jollyred reacted to heppnerguy for a topic
There are a lot of theories out there but the best Idea, in my opinion is to change out the the thumb screw and the set screws when all this starts to happen, as to start sanding and forcing the set screw harder and harder only starts the clamp itself to spread and then before you know it, you have to replace the entire unit. If one changes the set screw and thumb screw when all this starts, one saves further frustrations and money to do as I suggest above right away. Just my opinion and I works for me Dick heppnerguy1 point -

Doll furniture
Alexander Fadeev reacted to rdatelle for a topic
Hi everyone. Just finished these pieces. Still have one more chair to make out of Oak. I ran out so I had to order more. The table and chairs are a Steve Good Pattern and the doll swing is from Berry basket. The swing is about two feet tall and made out of pine. The table is made out of Walnut and chair is Oak. I'm not sure if I want to leave them plain or just give them a coat of Mineral oil. There for my three Granddaughters ages 4, 5 and 8. I really don't want to varnish them Any other ideas are welcome. Thanks Ralph!1 point -

I found a B&W image of a Papercut cutting of a “tree(?)” by a UK artist Lois Cordelia. The image is quite unique and I’m sure not to everyone’s taste. However, it intrigued me, and I wondered how it would look if made as a Scroll Saw Cutting. The original was a European A3 paper size cutting that, using Inkscape, I increased and modified slightly to convert it into an 11” x 17” scroll pattern. No other modifications were necessary to make it scrollable. I cut the pattern in a 5/32” thick solid core Walnut ply panel mainly using Pegas #2/0 Spiral blades and a Pegas #3 MGT R blade for the long straight border cuts. The perimeter border is 1/4" wide so it is hidden under the rebbeted frame rails. I enhanced the Walnut cutting with a quick wipe-on/wipe-off coat of Minwax Dark Walnut stain, mainly to stain all the interior vertical edge cuts but not wanting to lose the visibility of the wood grain. The cut panel was affixed to a 1/4” thick BB Ply Backer that I chose to paint to look somewhat like sky using my Air Brush and Acrylic Artist Air Brush Paints. The Frame is a 3/4” wide rabbeted frame made from Poplar, that was Stained with Minwax Honey and protected with multiple coats of Clear Gloss Wipe-on Polyurethane. Comments and critiques always welcome. A special note here. Cutting this image, whether you care for the image itself or not, would be an excellent opportunity for anyone that may be interested in learning how to use Spiral Blades. I will post the pattern in Pattern Exchange and include a short tutorial under Works in Progress & Tutorials that will provide; ‘My Methods’ that I followed when I cut this image with Spirals.1 point -

AFRICAN BIG FIVE
Alexander Fadeev reacted to Insane Dust Maker for a topic
So to day I post my African Big Five cut (remember my Lion Project) well this is it. The Big Five is very special to all South Africans because it’s part our heritage. Before I tell you what the problems were and how I approached them, please don’t tell me you don’t like the colour of the back round or the texture of the board is not right that’s immaterial, just look at the cuttings and the work, put into it. All the patterns are Russ Beard Patterns, the cuttings were all double stack 4mm Birch Plywood the Lion is the Centre price and was cut on a 11”x14” my standard board size, the Leopard, Buffalo and Rhino had to be reduced in size keeping a eye on the aspect to keep the proportions right, but by reducing the size made the cuts more difficult, adding to the problem only the Lion was a Free Standing Pattern the others were all inboard patterns so with Russ’s approval and help from my wife Loraine how is a great artist we converted the patterns on the fly to stand alone pattern of Ouse the Elephant had to bigger to.Time plenty hours, holes I estimate between 3000-5000 holes cuts. The patterns were soaked in Danish Oil drained and excess wiped off allowed to dry for two days and the two coats clear varnish. This type of cut deserves a very special back round so I will be taking a photo of the African Savannah and glue that to the backer and the the cuts on top of that in layers. I’m very happy with the results even though the stain was unpredictable the colour of the animals can vary from area to area so it does not bother me.1 point -

This is another Jim Blume pattern I previously cut and has become one of my best sellers. This was one of a double stack using the new type of wood (Blonde) at my local box store. The piece is 11X14 with my typical finish of Natural stain with a black backer followed by 4-coats of Polyacrylic. Frame was made using framing material. While this wood is not as pretty as Maple or Birch, I haven't had any problems with it delaminating as I have had with the "premium" wood. Thanks, Jim, for another beautiful pattern.1 point -

Squints

"Michael 'Squints' Palledorous walked a little taller that day. He had kissed a woman, and he had kissed her long and good.” Squints, from The Sandlot. Awesome coming of age movie about a group of young baseball players in the summer of 1962. Originally the glasses were just going to be cut out, leaving the eyes as floaters. I decided to save the glasses, add lenses and put them back in. The water drops are clear JB Weld. Pattern in library.1 point -

The Man with No Name
Alexander Fadeev reacted to FrankEV for a topic
I found this B&W ‘High Noon Show Down’ image on-line and thought it would be a good Scroll Saw subject. I know there are few fans of Old West among the SVV members that might like it. I understand this is a scene from a movie/series of a while back of the same name. I never watched it. The conversion consisted of no more than resizing and inverting the image, so the cutout areas were red lines with grey fill. Added a few bridges to the pattern and I also found that I needed a few more bridges during cutting. I didn’t count, but there were a lot of holes. All cutting was done with Pegas #2/0 Spiral blades, except I used a Pegas #1 MGT R for the long straight cuts along the narrow 1/4” wide edges (under the frame rabbet). The cut panel is 5/32” x 11 x 14” solid core Walnut ply that was darkened with Minwax Dark Walnut stain. The cut panel was affixed to a 1/4” x 11” x 14” solid core Maple Ply backer that was left natural. This project is “Old School” - two tone wood, and it took a lot of will power on my part not to try and add color. The assembled panel was finished with multiple coats of Clear Gloss Spray Lacquer. The Frame is 1 3/4” wide Premium Pine rails sealed with non-wax containing Shellac, stained with Minwax Honey Maple Gel-Stain, and finished with two coats of Clear Minwax Satin Wipe-on Poly. Since I have been using Acrylic Paints and Polycrylic finishes recently, I almost forgot how long oil stain and Poly takes to dry - seems like forever. Comments and critiques always welcome. I’ll post the pattern in Pattern Exchange.1 point -

The original “Stencil Art” I used for these pieces is by Lee Czembowski, aka BoyKidWonder (BKW). The characters, in BKW’s art, were inspired by characters in comics and the like, and created with slightly naughty interpretations. You may recognize many of the characters. Since they are already stencils, I had to do very little work to adapt them as patterns for the Scroll Saw other than adjusting pattern size. I decided to break away from my usual large panel presentations and do this series of B&W cuttings in small 5/32” x 6 1/4” x 8 1/4” solid core Maple panels affixed onto painted oversized ¼”x 8” x10” BB ply backers. Of course, I could not stop myself from adding a little color by painting the oversized backer frame area pink. After assembly, all panels were protected with Clear Gloss Acrylic. The small pattern size and the intricate details required me to exclusively use Pegas #2/0 spiral blades as many cutouts were not much wider than the blades themselves. I also had to be extra careful not to cut though between adjacent areas as many were very close together. My success rate was maybe 98%. And, yes, in a few places CA glue came to the rescue. I also parted from making custom frames for these pieces. I found very inexpensive – less than $3 each - 8” x 10” frames on Amazon, which I decided to use. The painted black rails of the frames are about 1/2” wide and were supplied with the usual glass (plastic), matt board and backer for hanging or tabletop standing, all of which I discarded. I only had to add a small sawtooth hanger to each frame and the pieces were complete. Comments and critiques always welcome.1 point -

This is a pattern I made and cut on 1/4-inch Maple ply. The face of the plywood delaminated in a couple areas so I decided to paint the piece. The paint is water color. I finished with a Minwax natural stain and 4-coats of Polyacrylic with light sanding with 600 grit sandpaper between coats. I cut the frame from picture frame stock I had on hand. The piece is 13X14. The pattern is in the Village library.1 point -

James Dean's 550 Spyder
Alexander Fadeev reacted to munzieb for a topic
I have a friend that has a "thing" about James Dean's 550 Spyder Porsche. It was time to do another car with a portrait. Dean was an up and coming movie star of the mid '50's with a love of fast cars and racing. He had several popuar movies under his belt including "Rebel with out a Cause" and "Giant" and took his earnings to purchase the 550. He was on his way to a race in California when the accident occured. There are several stories regarding the accident and the remains of the car and make for interesting reading. The car design was taken from a photo and the Keith Wood portrait of James Dean came from SSV pattern library. The car pattern was not too difficult but the portrait was more involved, especially the mouth. Cutting was on 1/8" BBPW and I made a separate frame from molding purchased from Lowes. Finish is Shellac and Gloss Lacquer.1 point -
Had to cut
Alexander Fadeev reacted to heppnerguy for a topic
I was doing my morning walk and joined a neighbor on the last part of my walk home. He had a cute little dog with him and I remembered that I had a pattern of his dog's bread. So I told him I would make a cutting of it for him. He liked the idea. For the live of me, I can not recall the name of the bread but it is a very common one these days. Anyway, it was an easy cut and a nicely done pattern, so here is the one I cut. Dick heppnerguy1 point -
