For Christmas I made one of my grandsons a "soccer" plaque with shaker pegs. The daughter asked me to make the granddaughter something similar with a cheerleader motif. Here's what I came up with. Top layer 1/2" Baltic for all the inside cuts, FD Polar #1 blades throughout the interior cuts. 1/2" Baltic laminated to the top with polyurethane glue. All outside cuts made with FD #3 Polar blades. Name painted white and then with glow in the dark paint, for the cool factor. Steve Good pattern modified with the name and the shaker pegs. Mounting holes hidden under the lower team logos. The cheer team.6 points

Wanted to make some small gift boxes and ordered some mahogony. 6 each 24 x 4" 1/8" boards (should have ordered 5-6" wide boards to better fit pattern). Stack cut 2 at a time. finish with gloss laquer. I had done the 2 center boxes with bubinga wood previously but it is getting very expensive. (twice as expensive as mahogony) Fun cutting.5 points

Idaho plaque
MTCowpoke22 and 2 others reacted to Wichman for a topic
Just finished this one. Idaho plaque, pattern by BoB scroll . Wood is a repurposed plaque ( 6" X 23" ) from a thrift store, 3/4 pine; blades FD Polar #1 throughout. Second Picture is the piece on the saw with a " 1 2 3 block" as a counterweight, nonslip pad underneath. Started cutting in the center to reduce the weight when I got to the ends.3 points -

Commissions
MTCowpoke22 and one other reacted to Dak0ta52 for a topic
I haven't posted in some time with new projects because I've been busy working on commissions. I thought I'd post some of them to give you a "look-see." The Porsche was actually three photos I combined into the one piece. The K-9 was with a local police department and passed away. The plaque was a presentation to the handler. The three dogs together are my fur babies (not counting the new puppy I got the wife for Christmas) I'll post patterns of the Border Collie and Lab in the library. Those were 'free to use' photographs that I made patterns from at the request of the customer. If you have any questions about any of the pieces, please let me know. Hope you enjoy!2 points -
If the tear out is on the top, could it be you have the blade installed down side up?2 points

Difficult plywood
barb.j.enders and one other reacted to JJB for a topic
Yep, i have cut a few of those as well. 20 minutes turned into about 20 hours with sanding and finishing, but I had a good time and my beloved got some more puzzles for her learning centers in the library.2 points -

+1 on this...I've been scrolling for decades and I still run my finger down the blade to determine which way it cuts.1 point

Run your finger down the blade. It should glide down. No teeth grabbing you. I don’t look at it, I feel it.1 point -

Love At First Sight, Scroll Saw Project Video
keefie reacted to artisanpirate for a topic
Hey Everyone! In this scroll saw project video, we make a cute stick figure couple for Valentine's Day 2024! I used pieces from my scrap bin to bring this piece to life and it's a very quick project to make! This could be a great gift to give something totally handmade to a loved one on the 14th! The Design comes from Making Wooden People & Pets by Fox chapel Publishing. Hope you all like the video! #ArtisanPirate1 point -

You could use the plaque as a template and trim the backer with a router with a trim bit. However, because the Plaque is pre painted, I might be inclined to make the backer smaller than the Plaque so the backer edges do not show when hung. To hang I would install two sawtooth hangers, one near each end close to the top. It will hang with out any tipping. Adding shaker pegs would be a nice touch, but not sure what would get hung on them. IMO, jackets or the like would be too heavy. Small fancy hooks might be better for hanging Keys or such. The backer colors sound good, just wondering if they will show enough. Potatoes are brown, aren't they. A simple dark brown might look nice also. These are all just my thoughts. Not trying to tell you what to do.1 point

Here’s an older one I did for hubby one year. It’s a Steve Good compound cut pattern. You can find it on his blog here: https://scrollsawworkshop.blogspot.com/2012/10/this-is-pattern-i-used-in-yesterdays.html Looks like he has a newer one with more words (Love you to Pieces) that he shared last year just before Valentine’s Day. It can be found here on his blog: https://scrollsawworkshop.blogspot.com/search?q=Love+you+compound1 point

Most pictures of Steves projects, including the one you show are simulations, the colors are computer generated. You have to find and pick your owns colors. For me, I always use hard woods. For that backer, I would use Mahogany or Sapele. This piece is Maple for the overlay and Sapele for the backer board.1 point

Thx for all this info and input, but all in all the I feel the scroll saw doesn't make the scroller. You could have an expensive saw, hawk or hegner, and be good, but someone else with a dewalt will be a better scroller, its the talent of the person scroll sawing, RJ1 point

I use paste floor wax for all my table tops. Not only does it make the wood slide easily but it also helps prevent rust on the cast iron.1 point
