  1. I had hoped this piece of Cedar was the right wood but did not turn out like I had hoped.....Working on a 2nd one on Adler wood...I really liked Charlie's pattern and wanted to do it justice..Thanks for looking. Steve,

    Man in the Moon

Finished another intarsia piece. I am so glad that patterns are just suggestions!!! This pattern came from the SSWC #71. This is mostly poplar. The eye has some walnut & two other mystery woods. The lips are two separate mystery woods. Finished with one coat of shellac then topped with the beeswax butter! The Poplar is from the stuff I bought this spring and had cupped. The tips of the moon are on the cupped edge, but I thought it worked with the moon. I really liked the grey markings in the wood.

    Corgi Portrait done

With the help of @grampa, I finally finished the Corgi portrait that he made from a picture I posted. Thanks so much. I used a #2 and #3 spiral blade to cut this one out. Just need to put some danish oil on and it's ready for its new home.

  6. Hey Everyone! In this fun scroll saw project video, we make an amazing and unique Bigfoot Diorama! This Steve Good design uses various thicknesses of material to give the project a unique 3D design! Keep in mind, I made the entire project from a basic piece of 3/4 inch pine shelving board. I believe in the legendary creature, do you? Hope you all like the video! #ArtisanPirate

  7. How fast you can make a project only really matters in two scenarios. 1. The customer is paying by the hour and you already told them it would take 2 hours. 2. The wife comes into the shop and tells you the Smith’s are coming over tonight and we need to give them a Christmas gift. BEEN THERE!

    Small gift fret boxes

Wanted to make some small gift boxes and ordered some mahogony. 6 each 24 x 4" 1/8" boards (should have ordered 5-6" wide boards to better fit pattern). Stack cut 2 at a time. finish with gloss laquer. I had done the 2 center boxes with bubinga wood previously but it is getting very expensive. (twice as expensive as mahogony) Fun cutting.

    Another name with a rose

This time the requested rose color was bright blue, I painted the leaves teal green. The Rose pattern is from Steve Good. The small butterfly shape is from an old Patrick Spielman book, "Scroll Saw Handbook with patterns" and the small heart I found in the font "webdings" (Capital Y ) The letter font is Z003 with the "outline font effect" turned on. The wood is 3/4" Poplar, FD Polar #! blades throughout, Two coats of shellac after painting.

  10. On this one I embedded a magnet on the left side so I could add the arrow. This would be helpful if you would be playing someone who is absent so they know it is their move.

    New saw problem

I called festool this morning and they said the festool turns on when it receives 1 amp draw but had no idea why it was doing this. I then called Bushton and was told nothing wrong with the saw , they basically consider the vac system a modifaction and do not support that. i personally see more and more people using a vac system so i would think they would be interested , but i guess not. i started the saw this morning found the sweet spot where the vac system shuts off , backed it off till vac came on then turned it backup to the sweet spot. i then put the saw under a constant load and the vac never shutoff. i have tried putting it on the 7 to 8 setting and starting the saw, the vac will run about 5 seconds then shut off . if you then shut switch off on saw and turn back on the vac will not start until you move variable speed higher or lower. thank you so much everone for the information and ideas.

    Commissions

I haven't posted in some time with new projects because I've been busy working on commissions. I thought I'd post some of them to give you a "look-see." The Porsche was actually three photos I combined into the one piece. The K-9 was with a local police department and passed away. The plaque was a presentation to the handler. The three dogs together are my fur babies (not counting the new puppy I got the wife for Christmas) I'll post patterns of the Border Collie and Lab in the library. Those were 'free to use' photographs that I made patterns from at the request of the customer. If you have any questions about any of the pieces, please let me know. Hope you enjoy!

    New saw problem

I think @Rolf mentioned something similar with his Festool and plugging his Hawk into it.. The Hawk didn't have enough power draw to turn on the vac. I think he ended up plugging the vac into his footswitch for the scroll saw so it comes on that way.. I may be wrong but I thought it was Rolf that mentioned this. I have my vac hooked up to the foot switch. I used a three way plug to plug the saw, vac, and hour meter to plug into the footswitch so when I hit the foot paddle it turns on the saw, vac and keeps track of saw run time.

    New saw problem

The Festool vac is sensitive to current changes and when you adjust the speed you are changing current ratings. I suggest if you want to do this then do not turn speeds while the vac is running. Try turning the speed to 7 or 8 before you start vac and see if it runs. It should. Or you can try going very slow with the speed changes and let the vac catch up electronically. This is a safety built into the vac. Something like a GFCI.

One of my favorite Eastwood movies. You did a very nice job on this! May have to try this pattern. For the record, I have never visited the island but have always wanted to.

    New saw problem

@wagner1958 Contact the manufacturer. It sounds like an unintended design feature that varies the output signal to the vacuum cleaner as you vary the scroll saw speed. I rather suspect that they will want to know about this and will provide a fix for it.

    Man in the Moon

Thank you all for the very kind and encouraging words. For @TAIrving and @JessL it has taken me more than 10 years to attempt the Intarsia route. I hate sanding and this take a lot of sanding. However, the sanding reveals a new look in the piece. Not just to "smooth" it out for a finish.

I have actually seen the movie twice. Go me. You did another great job Charlie. Visited there about 5 years ago with our (at then) 12 year old grandson. I had never know him so quite. He absolutely loved it and he still talks about it. Marg

    Difficult plywood

I've run across a few pieces of 1/4" Baltic birch plywood that was difficult to cut before but this one was horrible. Some sections cut like butter and others was like cutting through a log and had trouble staying on a line. There was a time it almost went into the burn barrel but I had too much time in it to bring myself to do it. It's finally done but will need a few tweaks with some sand paper...

  32. It's been hard to get motivated to get in the garage workshop to work on anything lately. So I printed out a few patterns and psyched myself up to get off my butt and do something constructive... Unfortunately the temp in the garage was a little chilly. Even though I could fire up the heater and get the air temp up to almost tolerable, I'm not wearing gloves on that cast iron scroll saw table... Oh well!

  33. I definitely don't blame you one bit. At 65 degrees, if there is a whisper of wind, I find it difficult to go outdoors and set up my tablesaw. That's my next thing, to cut some plywood down to size to start on the peacock table lamp that Berndt Munzieb sent me the plans for.

  34. I ran across this fellow a while back and now he has his own place on Facebook. He has been in the business of servicing Hegner saws in the U.K. for 30 years or so. He has a ton of helpful info on his site. Check him out. Lots of pictures and how-to advice. Very nice fellow. He also has available an improved drive link that has better sealed bearings and quite a bit larger so it won't crack. On Facebook, search for "Hegner, A Saw Subject".

  46. I saw this project posted by the designer a little while back along with the pattern. So first of all I wish to thank Dave Monk for so generously sharing his pattern. I know my project does not stand up to the talents of Dave but I still want to post what I did so you all know I am not simply sitting in the sun and not at all in my shop. My wife liked it so at least that more than made it worth while for me to make the effort to cut it Dick heppnerguy

    Pirate Ship

Another subject I have been searching for, for quite some time, is a Pirate ship. Most of the ship images are great to look at but I was unable to find any that were suitable to convert into a scrollable pattern due to all the fine details. I found this Tattoo Image posted by Holy Trinity Tattoo Studio with no indication of copyright or use restrictions. The image is not very cluttered with a lot of fine details, but it took a lot of work to convert the image into a scrollable pattern. Inkscape did a pretty good job of making a usable SVG. However, since the image was really of a simple line-type drawing, Inkscape made the somewhat thick/wide lines into very narrow long open cutout areas. This required me to add a bunch of bridges. The result was in an 11 x 17 inches pattern that was a difficult cut. The pattern was cut in 5/32” solid core ply using Pegas #2/0 and #1 Spiral blades. The backer is ¼” BB Ply painted black. At this point I need to state that I am not happy with my cutting. The very close together parallel cuts and tiny bridges did not make for a neat clean cutting. I think I should have taken a different approach when converting the image to a pattern. Areas like the Spars and Mast should have been fully open to the backer. Might have made cutting easier and cleaner. Although the cutting was not as good as I would have liked I knew painting the cut panel would hide a lot of the flaws. I also knew I would be painting the cut panel like doing a coloring book, with the black lines showing. I decided ahead that the Flag would be Black with a White Scull and Cross Bones, Sails an Off-White canvas color, Ship and Spars Brown and the Waves Aqua Green with White foam (dabbled with a brush). Wasn’t sure about how to handle the wind effects but knew it could not be white so decided on a VERY Pale Blue to add to the effect. Painting was done mostly with my air brush using Artist Acrylic Air brush paints with some brush work on the Flag and Spars. The assembled panel was finished with multiple coats of Clear Gloss Acrylic. All in all, the finish product does not look tooooo bad but as much as I feel this is not my best work, I decided to mount the panel in an old existing frame that has some dings and dents and has been lying on the shelf for a long time. Kinda suitable for the subject. Just cleaned it up with a fresh coat of a rattle can Gloss Brown paint. Just showing it because of the amount of work I put into completing it. You can be the judge of the work quality.

The puppy, Chip (as in Chocolate Chip Cookie), is only 4-months right now and is all legs and puppy fuzz. He's a Papillon so I'm going to wait for the adult hair to come in and to fill out a little.
