  1. Hi folks... It's been a while since posting on SSV, as I have been busy at my day job, and also spending a lot of hours in the workshop. Yesterday, I dropped off an assortment of 10 wooden toys to the VA Beach PD. This is the first batch of many that will go to them. The first image are the 10 toys 'curing'. I finished them in raw linseed oil. They will be used by the SVU when they come in contact with children. Kind of sobering in one way. The second photo is the box I deliver them in (no used Amazon boxes ) I am waiting to hear from two other PDs and a hospital. I have another 10 ready to be boxed for whoever asks. The Hippo is a gift for my grandson who turned 1 yesterday. I also gave him the completed Noah's Ark made out of 12 species of wood. The Hedgehog, goes to my 'rent-a-son's' newborn daughter along with a 12 species puzzle. I also included some photos of some of the other things in various stages of production, a lot in dry fit stage. I actually just finished cutting out the Cow/farm piece, it is 5 layers. I did it as a quad stack, so I produced 4 at the same time. It is in dry fit stage, now comes sanding, painting, then glue up. So much to be finished. This is my box before I started the linseed process. I counted this morning, and I have about 30 toys, ready for drilling, sanding, profiling, and wheels. Some get linseed, some do not.

  3. Well the weather finally got past fifty the last few days so I had to take advantage of it and get into the workshop to scroll. Too bad I didn't realize the rectangular hole in the base pattern was too big for the project before I cut it. After modifying the size, cutting it again, and spouting some choice words I finished it up...

That picture is from when she was about 10. She is now 27, it surprised me she expressed interest in scrolling. She always talks about watching me and when I let her do some cutting on the saw.

    Zebra pair

This was a special order from a man whose father and step-mother claimed the zebra as their spirit animal of sorts. Both of these people died and the man that ordered it wants to memorialize his dad and step-mom.

  11. No, not Steve. Etsy, multidimensioncraft is the shop. They have a ton of 3D patterns like this. Most seem to be for laser. But there are some you can do on the scroll saw, like the cow.

  20. I got the honor of being asked to cut out 3 Mississippi states for a friend to have engraved for our State Youth BB Gun tournament. I kept one of the outer cuts and made this little plaque of my favorite State. It was a fun little project and I am going to make more.

    Name Puzzle

This was a custom order. My daughter's friend was having a baby shower and my daughter is broke. I offered time and materials (cause that's what we do). I gave her a choice of fonts. Thanks @don in brooklin on for the Berlin font. This is what she chose. It is Wondrus from DaFont. I think it might become a fav. This is cut from 1/2" ply with a #7 blade. Acrylic paint with Walrus Oil as a top coat.

    Man in the Moon

Finished another intarsia piece. I am so glad that patterns are just suggestions!!! This pattern came from the SSWC #71. This is mostly poplar. The eye has some walnut & two other mystery woods. The lips are two separate mystery woods. Finished with one coat of shellac then topped with the beeswax butter! The Poplar is from the stuff I bought this spring and had cupped. The tips of the moon are on the cupped edge, but I thought it worked with the moon. I really liked the grey markings in the wood.

I just went up in size from my EX 21 to now a Hawk G426 (so 26") I really did like the extra space to swing around my boards. I think going big just gives you more options. I want to eventually do scroll work on some furniture as well as doing larger pieces so I needed the extra size. The Seyco 24 does have a nice big table but I am sure either the King or the Pegas would also be wonderful saws....I really do like the Hawk G4... it is a beast compared to my Excalibur. By the way, I just love the picture of your daughter and you...thanks for sharing!

    Need Your Thoughts?

I purchased my Pegas 30 from Denny and I can say I've never regretted it in any way. Have I cut anything that required the 30-inch throat... no, not yet. But it's there when I need it. I do plan on cutting large pieces in the future. I have the pattern right now for a piece that will be around 10-inches X 42-inches. This is a huge machine. At the time I made the purchase, Pegas just came out with their 30-inch and Seyco just introduced their 24-inch. I was torn on which way to go. The Seyco had more distance between the blade and the front of the table, however, considering the Pegas blade clamps as well as the extra 6-inches, Pegas won the toss. The 21 would serve you well, I'm sure, but if you have the space I would recommend the larger, 30-inch saw. Like I say, it is huge. My shop is unheated as well as having a few areas that drip when it rains. I purchased a 6' X 8' greenhouse popup tent where I house my saw, a table for my blades and a stool for a little 1500 watt heater that keeps me toasty warm even when the temp drops below freezing. I have a waste can for my scrap as I cut it out and a dust collector velcroed to the stand of the saw to catch the majority of the sawdust. (The dust collector is a styrofoam meat tray stuck to a piece of 1/4-inch ply cut to size and sits on the cross members of the saw stand.) Depending on how much I'm cutting, I roll up the door and give it a good vacuum when needed. The greenhouse has the large zip-up door as well as 2 zip-up windows that can be rolled up and secured. I don't think there will be an issue with it being too hot in the summer. If it is, I have several fans I can use to circulate the air. Good luck on our decision. Regardless of which you choose, you won't regret going with a Pegas.
