  2. The steer head was my first real scroll project using my 90's era, single speed, pin tpe blade scroll saw. The RN is my favorite, its a Steve Good pattern that I modified to include the recipient's initials. I used scrap from pallets and other sources, mostly pine. My latest is the nativity scene, Pictured is a pine practice cut, I did a few in popular for some friends. my cutting was halted in January with my stroke. I am waiting on my new saw, Dewalt 788, to arrive this week. ready to get serious!

  4. I am interesting what instruments do you use for drilling holes for scroll saw projects. And show my new mini drill. There are differnt mini drills at Ebay and Amazon, but they are qite expensive, same as delivery to my location. I was looking for a small and cheap mini drill and found this one at Aliexpress (China store), btw is it popular in USA? Also it includes 0.8mm, 1mm and 1.2mm drills and costs just $5. It works from mobile charge block (not included). Advantages: small, cheap, usual drills suit for it, comfortable for thin materials. Disadvantages: on/off button on the wire, I think it would be more comfortable on body of drill; not ergonomic body (just a cylinder), dosnt suits if you need to make perfect perpendicular hole (as you hold it in a hand and measure by eye), max drill size is 1.2mm, one speed. Overall I am happy with the purchase and will continue to use this drill. Here is short video preview of this mini drill -

    What drill do you use?

I have three methods to use to drill holes. 1. cordless Dremel tool with a drill chuck accessory combined with a Dremel plunge router attachment. a. advantages; quick easy portable, unlimited throat ( no cord ). b disadvantages; limited power (generally not an issue), limited run time ( generally not an issue ) not suited to some of the drilling tasks that I have ( edge drilling ). 2. Drill Press, along with a micro chuck for those tiny bits ( #71 ), cross slide vise for precision edge drilling. a advantages; no running out of power during a long run of drilling holes. Precision for some edge drilling tasks, the double lidded basket that I'm working on needs hinge pin holes drilled in the edge of the lid, it's an 1/8" hole in a 5/16 thick piece, that leaves 3/64 on the sides, not much meat and I can't miss, the cross slide vise allows me to clamp the lid to be drilled and adjust exactly where the drill bit will enter the piece 3. drill guide for a handheld drill. This is Okay for rough work but just doesn't have the precision that I want.

  7. Now Kevin did I say anywhere in there that the saw was not a good saw and it did not work? The OP asked if I would buy it or anyone else? That is what I based my answer on. I heard good things about Deltas clamps but if they were that good how come you do not see them on saws today??????????????? It is probably a good beginners saw if all works well. Put me in the catagory as the thumb screw clamps are great.

  8. I am a hobbyist scroller but more importantly a lucky husband and father! In 2022 I fired up my old craftsman and started scrolling for the first time in probably 20 years. i did a few simple projects and then some nice Steve Good patterns including a modified nurse pattern for my daughter in laws graduation. In January I suffered a stroke. I am fortunate that it did not affect me cognitively, but it did leave my left side flacid. So, i invested in a Dewalt 788 (got a great deal) because of the ease with changing the blade with one hand. I will use a hack that Steve Good shared a few years ago to hold the blade. My belief is that scrolling will assist in rehabing my hand. Looking foward to sharing my findings!

    Maltese Puppy

This project started in a reverse order to the usual format. This beautiful piece of mahogany was given to me by a friend. It was 13' x 10" x 1 3/8" thick. I was thinking of various subjects when I decided to check out the patterns in the Scrollsaw Village Patterns Section. When I saw the fantastic "Maltese Puppy" by superb pattern designer, Jim Blume, I knew this would work very well for this project. The wood was sanded, the edges were routed, and the pattern was attached with 3M spray adhesive. Pilot holes were drilled and the scroll work was completed with spiral blades. The carving was completed using a Foredom Rotary Power Carver and the fur was produced with multiple passes with the top edges of three different sizes of columnar bits. The puppy was colored with Minwax Polycrylic Finish and artist acrylic paints. The background was finished with multiple coats of polyurethane finish. Thank you Jim, for the beautiful design of this pattern. Dick

  10. My number one go to is the Scroller's Drill by Seyco. Seems to work bests and after several months of use I have yet to break a bit. My second choice is my drill press. Primarily used for larger holes. Third is a Dremel with the plunge router attachment. This works okay but there is play in the attachment and if you're not careful you will break bits.

  11. Here it is, finished and ready to hang on the wall. BTW, my wife has claimed it and it is to hang on our wall. Since I last posted about it, after many side-tracks and disruptions, I have encased it in clear epoxy, sanded and clear-coated it with lacquer. The wood is 3/8" mesquite and I used Pegas MGT blades, mostly #3. The finished product is roughly 7-1/2" H x 7-3/4" W. It was a fun project to cut although it took many hours. I had not originally planned to do the epoxy but the words at the bottom were fragile. There are several single bridges between the H, the N, the 3 and the 6. They broke and I had to glue them back together. You can probably see it if you look close enough. Now, with the epoxy, nothing is going to break. I will share the pattern if anyone is interested.

  13. I bought it just for $5 at Aliexpress (China store) - https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006499218253.html Also it includes 0.8mm, 1mm and 1.2mm drills. It works from mobile charge block (not included). Very comfortable to use for thin materials (1/8-1/6 inches). Disadvantage - on/off button on the wire, I think it would be more comfortable on body of drill. I know there are many small drills at Ebay or Amazon, but they are qite expensive. 23. I say, because I love spending other peoples money, buy it.. Sounds like it is a good entry level scroll saw. Looking at my local craigslist there are several Delta's for sale.. only one has a lesser asking price. These seem to be pretty popular saws for their price range and age.. another thing to consider from what I have looked at.. if you buy it and it is a complete bust.. you could get your money back selling parts from it.

  24. Yeah but for a person on a tight budget these saws do still work well.. are they a Hawk or Hegner? no far from it.. I've not seen too many DW 788's around for $65 either so there is that.. I guess it's just me but at one time I didn't have money to spend on higher end stuff and that feebee 2 speed Delta made me a lot of money.. Not junk saws but not anything close to a Cadillac either.. IF I had the choice between the old Delta and a cheap Harbor Freight or one of those other really cheap entree level saws I would hands down choose the Delta.. provided it was in good working order. You can find them cheap at garage sales many times as good ones down to just parts machines. Everyone starts somewhere and that is how I started in the hobby / business.. In some ways I see them as a better more user friendly saw than a DW because the upper arm is spring loaded so it goes up out of the way on it's own. The quickset II blade chucks where the choice of blade chucks by many scrollers and they even had retrofit kits to put them on Hawks.. I believe Rolf has these clamps on his Hawk G4 actually.. I don't understand why people think the thumb screws are considered a good set up.. They've clearly never used a set of those Delta Quickset clamps..

  29. Yip sadly all state owned entities are falling apart, the problem is if you don’t do maintenance on the infrastructure for thirty years it will fall apart. All foreign aid given to them by the rich countries disappears into their pockets, we have a name for it it’s called the “Self Enrichment Program” line their pockets and the rest can go fly a kite.

  30. Our mail system has collapsed just like every other state owned entity in this country, this is due to a communist corrupt government.
