A couple of recent finishes
Ron Johnson and 3 others reacted to RabidAlien for a topic
A couple I recently finished up. Standard 3/8" ply from Lowes, frames are scrap lumber ripped down. Stains are Minwax "Honey" and "Natural". The car came from the pattern library here, and The Shadow was a pic I found online. Filled in his scarf with some red acrylic paint that my daughter wasn't using (she's switched to oils). Wanted to put "Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows." but figured out pretty quick that the text would have to be incredibly tiny to fit on there. Maybe if I save up my allowance and am able to get a deeper saw....4 points -

Standing Miniature Birdhouses
heppnerguy reacted to Denny Knappen for a topic
Eight Standing Miniature Birdhouses patterns by the late Diana Thompson. I used Poplar for the birdhouses and Eastern Red Cedar for the birds except for the eight one, I used Lacewood. Cut on the Pegas scroll saw using Pegas #3 and #6 Super Skip blades. After sanding, a dip in diluted Shellac and another light sanding. Comments welcome.1 point -
No. 10 in the series
Ron Johnson reacted to Millwab for a topic
I have a couple friends that love baseball and puzzles, so for their birthdays I’ve been making them a puzzle from a Norman Rockwell baseball themed illustration. This year is #10 in the series. The locks around the edge add a little challenge rather than a straight edge to identify the outside "frame" of the puzzle.1 point -
Very nice, really like the car with the frame, RJ1 point

What drill do you use?
OCtoolguy reacted to MTCowpoke22 for a topic
I have a benchtop drill press that I use for probably 90% of what I do. It'll chuck down to hold a 1/16" bit. I do also have the Seyco Scroller's Drill and it works well when needed.1 point -
I also use my drill press. I have a chuck that will take a .040 drill bit,1 point

I have used deck stain on many outdoor projects including lawn and deck furniture. It works well and is easy to apply. I just reapplied it as needed.1 point -

Very nice cutting Denny; I found the patterns for these @ : https://www.thewinfieldcollection.com/product/Compound-Cut-Birdhouse-Ornaments-Project-Pattern once the winfield collection site pops up type "mini birdhouse pattern set" in the search box, then scroll all the was down to the bottom. Click on the picture of the standing birdhouses. That should get you there.1 point -
Maybe it's time for one or more of you scrollers to step in and either help out or take the business over. Buy him out or just help get him off his high center. If the business is only a sideline/hobby, you maybe can add some sage advice to help him. It would be a win/win for all involved.1 point

Off Topic Finishing??

I know the Amish build entire furniture line of products from PVC lumber and in all colors and sizes. yes the final product is heavier than wood but no maintenance after. Can stay outdoors in all weather. Finding this type lumber maybe tough. I never looked for it. There is also Trex decking materials. That stuff is heavy too and tough on blades to cut but again nothing to do when done. The PVC that home centers sell can be stacked to make any size lumber you need. No it does not crack in the sun. Used it as trim on shed. As I said I am not a gardener so do not know about those buckets but always heard if planting food that white and certain type white is best. They do not absorb heat as well as break down plastics. Happy Gardening.1 point -
Thanks for the tips JT much appreciated The buckets ( according to the internet ) if they have the H2 code in the triangle shaped info code on the buckets is supposed to be food grade buckets. I thought the same thing but again.. according to the internet, LOL.. I would of rather had white buckets but only thing locally in stock was these ugly Menards green ones. Now if I hit the stores today they probably have hundreds of white ones, LOL I did look online yesterday and those PCV boards are not cheap around here, and I didn't see 2x4 size but probably the 1 x's would be strong enough I don't know.. be a lot of weight once ten buckets get filled with soil and water etc.. These 2x4's were only just over $2 each.. I have less than $100 into the buckets, paint, deck screws, and I have enough supplies not counting the buckets to build another for myself which I think I might do. Will need another box of screws and buckets but should have enough paint etc for another one. Cheapest PVC board I could find that might come close to working was nearly $25 each. The sun also makes the PVC more brittle over time so I'm not quite convinced it would be a "lot" better for the amount of money. Yeah I did spend around an hour painting them and I still have the ends and another coat so you could be right on that point I suppose.. at least for using a treated 2x4 since they aren't a whole lot more than these regular construction ones. At the end of the day the learning experience is sometimes worth more money than I saved anyway.. you always find things you'd do different when doing something for the first or even the second or third time in some cases.1 point

Well stop and do the math and I bet you will see you saved $0. No paint needed. Less labor. You always say Time is money. One other thing and no I am not a gardener but I would look into the use of colored buckets for food grown items. I believe white is only accepted colors. Or at least make sure they are food safe buckets.1 point -

John 3-16 Heart finished (finally)
Ron Johnson reacted to TAIrving for a topic
Here it is, finished and ready to hang on the wall. BTW, my wife has claimed it and it is to hang on our wall. Since I last posted about it, after many side-tracks and disruptions, I have encased it in clear epoxy, sanded and clear-coated it with lacquer. The wood is 3/8" mesquite and I used Pegas MGT blades, mostly #3. The finished product is roughly 7-1/2" H x 7-3/4" W. It was a fun project to cut although it took many hours. I had not originally planned to do the epoxy but the words at the bottom were fragile. There are several single bridges between the H, the N, the 3 and the 6. They broke and I had to glue them back together. You can probably see it if you look close enough. Now, with the epoxy, nothing is going to break. I will share the pattern if anyone is interested.1 point -
Shop Re-Do (Kinda)
jimmyG reacted to smitty0312 for a topic
Was tired of the way my shop had been since we built it 11yrs ago, had a swing out table which blocked a lot of space, also making impossible to get to the cupboards behind it….my solution was to get rid of the swing out table, redo the bench behind it, and make a flat/level 4x4 assembly table…..put hardboard on the 4x4 table this morning and on the workbench on other side of 10x24 shop…..I’m very pleased with the way it turned out….see before and after pics.1 point -

I love it. I am turning 84 at the end of the month and I get up a 5:30 every morning to enjoy coffee and conversation with a few old guys. I said to my wife when person I used to work with was retired and meeting up with some old fellows for coffee, " I will NEVER do that." And now I am on my 5th year having coffee with 'the guys' Your sign says it all. Dick heppnerguy1 point -
