Lady in a Hat

Although it isn't fully finished, I thought I would post here. Patttern supplied by @FrankEV, thanks. 1/4 bb ply cut with #5mg blade. It is just under 6" square. Colour is acrylic paint. I will be putting a floating frame around it. That will be stained black. It will be a ckear finish, probably Tung Oil.8 points -

My wife has been visiting family out of state and the chores and animals around home have kept me busy. I've also been quite busy cutting commissions. This one belonged to a member of the dog training club the wife is a member. Unfortunately, the cutie went to doggie heaven recently and my wife wanted me to do a piece for her friend. This is cut on 1/4 inch BB stained Ipswich. The backer is lauan stained pure black. The frame is cut from a 1X10 and also stained Ipswich. Both piece and frame are finished with several coats of Polyacrylic with sanding between coats. The wife is on her way home and hopefully I'll be able to get back enjoying the art and comments from my friends here in the Village.5 points -

I like the all red. I think the red hat ladies might buy this. I went back and looked at Frank's original and they are cool too.4 points -

My latest Intarsia piece. Done for the PAM (project a month) in the Facebook group Just Intarisa. Kathy Wise donated the pattern. Woods used: Spanish Cedar, Rainbow poplar, Walnut, Cherry, Aspen Wenge. The eye highlight is a pencil crayon sharpened and pushed in the hole. Finish is 2 coats of Osmo Satin with a coat of Walrus Oil over top. 25 pieces.3 points -

This is for my daughter's graduation. My apologies for the long read....It certainly took me multiple tries and a long time to create this. I used maple and walnut for the keys with black wood veneer turned sideways (the keys are 5/8 thick). The mahogany and walnut stripes are also 5/8 and were stack-cut on the Hawk G4 so the pieces could fit together when I separated them. I also used the veneer turned sideways to take up the kurf.... I made the ornament on top and the ones inside the box on my EX 21. I also cut a thin piece of walnut for the under side of the top since I didn't want the piano keys to show when you open it.. I polished it to a high gloss. The bottom was all walnut and I purple floxed the inside. The music box was a challenge since it came out of an antique powder box. 20240605_140234.mp41 point

Christmas prep

Trying to get some stuff done before I get my cataracts addressed, I am making embellishments for some scrabble tile name ornaments. I found the blanks for these at Hobby Lobby which saved me a ton of time sourcing 1/16" ply and cutting it to strips. The snowflakes have two light coats of shaker can white and the holly is handpainted with Unicorn Spit (full strength). Dime added for scale. Cut these in 10 to 14 piece stacks--but they are fragile.1 point -
Thanks for the idea. She’s usually pretty underwhelmed about what I make but she really likes this one.1 point

Rodney, your cutting and presentation are fantastic. It's your comments that I am primarily responding to. Takes me back to a time when my wife and I were just starting our life together. One week after marriage I reported for active-duty training as a navigator in the Air Force. We were all young and many of us newlyweds. I have never forgotten one of my fellow students never called his wife "My Wife" but referred to her as "The Wife". Thanks for showing your work and bringing back a very fond memory. Jerry1 point -

Thank you for the nice words. Not often I get to read some. Over the years I loved working with wood and my hands. I also have tried different medium to work with as well as designs. Sometimes my brain gets overworked and I have way too many ideas that I can not possibly finish all that I want to. Now that I have gotten older the body has slowed way down. But I still get in a mood to get in the shop to try something new. My focus these days is pen turning because that is a field that believe it or not has so much potential. That small canvas which to work with can also create so many design techniques. I can make a pen that will sell for close to $1000 in the right market. My scrolling days could never produce that. I add a specific display box with such pen and the value could double easily. But just like selling scrollsawn items you need the right audience. It is all about having fun with what you are doing and trying new things. Trial and error is always a good way to teach yourself. keep at it and have fun. thanks again.1 point -

my wife has a lot of problems with balance, dizziness, and a couple of major things that are not good, that makes her in need of much assistance. I doubt very much that I will be traveling to Oregon for quite awhile. If I do, I will make every effort to go and see Paul again. I have a lot of admiration for him and consider him to be a good personal friend of mine. Dick heppnerguy1 point -

You are one talented person indeed. I love it when I see someone who's work is outstanding. It is talent like yours that keeps me humble and knowing I am only a mediocre scroller. I do the best I know how but really do not take the time to understand how to improve myself accept by my own trial and error. Dick heppnerguy1 point -
