    Busy but Scrolling

My wife has been visiting family out of state and the chores and animals around home have kept me busy. I've also been quite busy cutting commissions. This one belonged to a member of the dog training club the wife is a member. Unfortunately, the cutie went to doggie heaven recently and my wife wanted me to do a piece for her friend. This is cut on 1/4 inch BB stained Ipswich. The backer is lauan stained pure black. The frame is cut from a 1X10 and also stained Ipswich. Both piece and frame are finished with several coats of Polyacrylic with sanding between coats. The wife is on her way home and hopefully I'll be able to get back enjoying the art and comments from my friends here in the Village.

    Something for Nonnie

I borrowed @dgman’s idea from the Spring scroll saw challenge and made this for my wife, Connie, who the grandkids call Nonnie. She fills our yard, porch, patio, etc with beautiful flowers and has 3 bird feeders, a hummingbird feeder, and a bird bath.

  3. Hello Puzzle Zombies, I hope that everyone is doing well. I got curious about my cutting time these days. I set things up and just shot a video. Much faster than I thought or guessed. Speed should never be a goal, I was just curious and went at my normal pace but was very surprised when done. Who wants to compare times just for kicks? Cut one and report back to us.

    Lady in a Hat

Although it isn't fully finished, I thought I would post here. Patttern supplied by @FrankEV, thanks. 1/4 bb ply cut with #5mg blade. It is just under 6" square. Colour is acrylic paint. I will be putting a floating frame around it. That will be stained black. It will be a ckear finish, probably Tung Oil.

    Fresh pine miracle

Green wood will dry unevenly, from the edges first, and it shrinks as it dries. The cracks, fissures and warping are due to the uneven shrinking. Maybe they disappeared when the wood finished drying throughout. Hopefully, some more experienced woodworkers can chime in on this. Nice cutting by the way.

  7. Between rain and too hot to play golf, spent some times in the shop. Made a cutting board for my daughter in black walnut 20”x18” one more bowl and a couple of steak boards (might be hard sell who can afford a steak) also my Legion branch asked for nameplate for their board meetings .

    Linda Ronstadt

Gave me goosebumps when I finished cutting, took the pattern off and realized I could see "the tracks of her tears."

    Fresh pine miracle

Recently I cut a 3 cm width piece of pine, see picture (Steve Good's pattern). After a few days, the piece of wood started to crack and there were fissures all around. I knew this might happen because the wood was really fresh green, but I just wanted to give it a try. After two weeks, all the cracks simply disappeared, as if the wood shrinked to its original shape. Unfortunately I don't have a picture with the cracks. Since I am a total newbie, I just wanted to ask if this is kind of normal and if you know the reason why this happened. Thanks!

  12. Nice job! Nobody loves the wings on those birds (from the pattern). Working on the same project, also inspired by @dgman's post, but I'm going to do the wings even if it kills me.

  16. Hi villagers.. I just got done with a small 4 inch logo. My daughter in law has set up her practice for therapy called "Three Feathers Therapy". This her logo.. This is my small 4 inch plaque. Made from Butternut wood. Wow that is soft wood. 2/0 spiral blade was used. She did not mind to add a bit of tint to the wood. I played with my green and orange transtint dye. Butternut wood did pretty well with green and orange. The middle feather I used water-based stain Provential brown. Very diluted, just to get the tan effect. The 3 bigger stand alone feathers : ( left to right) are oak, olive, canarywood. The oak did not do well with green dye after the finish darkened the oak. Olive is so pretty no tint was needed. Canarywood is orange enough with no stain. The off angle pic has a better angle to show green tint. This angle also shows that I added texture to the edge of the feathers. Spiral blade with slight pressure changes left to right. Lessons learned: Butternut wood is soft. Leaves fibers behind. Breaks easily. "feothors" now has a definition. Scollsawyers need therapy when using butternut. Olive smells like olive oil when cutting. Olivewood is my favorite wood due to smooth creamy patterns. It is hard to find good uses for olivewood to show off the grain patterns. Canarywood wood smells fruity. Nice orange color after an oil based finish. Nice to play with. Me. Mark Eason
