I was in a quandry lately as to a new scroll project. I was wandering through pinterist and came across a train picture I really liked. I had done Alex Fox's pattern and tried my hand on this one. My wife put it into grayscale with Photo Shop and I started eating pixels with MS 3D paint. (too lazy to learn a new program) It took a few days for the design and then off to the copy store. Cutting took about 2 days. I still have put on a finish but it has been too humid to do any spraying. I hope things dry up and cool down soon. 1/8" BBPW on 1/4" backer.10 points

I know things are busy for everyone with summer here and all. But I wanted to share my sanding and shaping station. I believe I finally have it to where I want it. Only took my 6 months (lol). But now everything is within reach and projects on the table. The Foredom is removable so I can use the dremel and the vac takes care of most all of the dust. Now I just need time to work on things. The Raptor has been on the sanding table for over a month now (ugh!)6 points

Hello everyone. I started scrolling during the pandemic and have never looked back. I started on a WEN and quickly outgrew it...returned it to Home Depot within 30 days and bumped up to a Delta. The Delta has been a complete workhorse, she has been so good to me. But...I've noticed more and more vibration as time's gone by. I've checked the undercarriage and tightened anything I could find, to no avail. I'm beginning to wonder if I may be ready for the next step up. I really find the vibration annoying at this point. Is there a saw between a Delta/Dewalt and the Pegas that you think I should look at? (Not sure I want to plunk down $1K for a Pegas if there's something else out there for a lesser price.) Thank you inadvance. Incidentally, I like making football helmets...3 points

It was about 80 degrees in the shop this morning and humidity was way up there.. Tough to move the wood on the cast iron table so I had to toss some corn starch on it so I could turn it. I've uses this clear shelf paper many times but the last few uses it was pulling the plywood's veneer loose so there's tiny pieces pulled away which I sanded in the direction to keep more from being pulled loose. It's like the shelf paper had Super 77 sprayed on it and even left a film. Wondering if the hear & humidity has anything to do with it. It still turn out okay as long as you don't look too close with the light raking across it... Again, thanks to grandpa for the pattern!3 points

Kevin, here is a video of a down to earth guy I follow on Youtube. You will see he uses a multitool to do the very thing you are considering. https://youtu.be/vLkRlbAmyQw?feature=shared I just bought a Milwaukee multitool based upon recommendations from carpenter friends. Milwaukee has a deal if you buy 2 batteries and a charger you get a free tool of which the multitool is one of the options. May want to check it out, the math works to take the deal.2 points

Oscillating Multi Tool?
kmmcrafts and one other reacted to Bill WIlson for a topic
I would get an assortment of wood cutting blades. You may well find that your remodeling project isn't a one blade fits all endeavor, much like scrolling. If you do much of this type of work, you will end up using this thing more than you might imagine, so having a few different blades will benefit you in the long run. At the least, I would add some sort of plunge/flush cut style blade. It could be easier than a half moon blade at getting into any tight corners you may encounter. BTW, the sander attachment sometimes comes in pretty handy as well.2 points -
There is a special place in Hell for the environmentalists and the politicians that allow this crap to happen. We still can't buy mineral spirits in the county where I live. I managed to buy a gallon through Amazon and it was shipped in from Georgia.2 points

I too am a self taught scroller from way back. Forums like this were not there but there were some old forums that I am sure a few members here recall back in the day. There were many pattern makers that have pasted away but their work still lives on. This all paved the way for more talent. Hopefully along the way I did help a few people out with some of what I picked up along my journey down the path of this hobby which has been fun and rewarding. If asked a question I try my best to pass information on. Now as we all know there is always more than one way to do just about anything so the more ideas one has to chose from hope they can make up their own minds and follow their own paths. But bottom line is always have some fun along the way. Making a few $$$ is a bonus in the long run. Giving away our work is also so rewarding in many ways. Happy Scrolling.2 points -
This is way off topic for scroll saw work but many folks here have expressed how much they like and use one of these multi tool things.. I'm sort of remodeling a 5th wheel travel trailer and needing to cut a line through the paneling so I don't destroy the whole inside of this since I'm hoping to just open up the wall and repair a small water damaged area and then put up a couple sheets of paneling. As some may know, or maybe not.. these things are glued and stapled together and the cupboards etc are screwed and glued from the outside of the trailer underneath the siding.. I'm hoping to be able to cut the paneling out and not have to destroy the cupboards etc. so was hoping to cut the panel up to near the edge of the cupboard.. Anyway, you guys think the multi tool would be good for cutting that paneling and if so what blade configuration would you recommend? I gotta say I bought this flex shaft tool from HF thinking it'd be a one time use tool on a project I was doing last winter in the house.. It has been used so much already in several projects including this camper rebuild job.. I only bought it as a cheapy one time use.. Being from HF I would think it should be broke by now.. Here is the flex shaft tool and I've worked the crap out of it.. should have broke by now but it keeps on going like the energizer bunny..LOL https://www.harborfreight.com/20v-cordless-variable-speed-rotary-tool-kit-with-flexible-shaft-36-piece-tool-only-58672.html Was thinking I'd get this multi tool.. anyone experience with this one? It's another one of those tools I don't have any use for it other than the job I'm currently working on.. however like the rotary tool, I'll probably use the crap out of it once i have one.. https://www.harborfreight.com/20v-brushless-cordless-variable-speed-oscillating-multi-tool-tool-only-58379.html1 point

Flag stand is made of Walnut (base) and Poplar (design). The base is sprayed with Deft glossy wood finish and design is stained with Minwax cherry and sprayed with Deft semi gloss wood finish. I want to thank Richard at @rafairchild2 for supplying me with the pattern and his help he provided throughout the process of making this. The self sculpture is yours truly with a pattern found on Steve Goods sight. It is made from walnut, oak, poplar, and cherry. Pretty good likeness of me, don't you think. Jerry1 point -

Next month will mark one year that I bought my Dewalt scroll saw and joined this great community of people. I've made quite a few projects in that time and received very helpful, valuable information from the members here. Just wanted to thank you all very much and special thanks to "grandpa" for his time and effort putting up with me to get some beautiful patterns of our Min Pins, past & present. You all Rock!!1 point -
First of all, thanks to Grampa for the Baby pattern. The second piece is another Grampa pattern from the Village Library. Both pieces will be a gift for a great friend whose wife and he just had their first baby, Stella. Both pieces were cut on 1/4-inch BB and stained with Minwax Ipswich. The backer is Pine stained with Minwax Pure Black. The frames were cut from 1X material and also stained with Ipswich. The pieces were then sprayed with several coats of Polyacrylic with light sanding between coats. I've also included the photo of Stella. She's a cutie!1 point

For what it is worth Jerry, I was happy you posted it. It inspired me to maybe design one for my desk at work, or to put on display in our store. (woodworking store) All of the others need to calm down. You may or may not have had the flags arranged properly, but who cares? The point is you are proud of your work, and you chose to share it with us. For that I am grateful and I hope you share more of your creations. Thank you sir.1 point -
Well, only one way to find out. Besides, it's really up to you if it works or not. I'd say give it a try and see what you get. That's half the fun of this hobby! Chris1 point

You know what, I am sorry I posted my flag stand. As I stated I did a lot of research and placed the flags in the order I thought was proper and what I read. After doing more research I discovered next to the American Flag should be the states flags then the military flags. I know I read that military flags should be placed before state flags, I will do research. Now, I am pretty certain the state flag orders will be in date order the states became members of the union and military flags to be displayed in date order they became a branch of the military. I consider myself to be a very patriotic American and have always respected our Flag. I posted my flag stand because I am proud of the work I did and wanted my fellow scrollers to see it. It is my hope this controversy can be put to bed and we can enjoy what this forum has meant to each of us. One very proud American, Jerry1 point -

I have all this along with my scrollsaws, table saw in a small basement. It's taken my 6 years to get to this point. Been thinking about the 1 inch vertical belt sander, just gotta figure out where to put it. Also considering some kind of mop sander too. Everything is set for me to sit down as I'm not able to stand for extended periods of time.1 point

Deft has been my favorite finish for several years. I heard rumors that it was changing, and I have not been able to find it locally for quite a while. So I searched the internet the internet and found I could buy from Amazon and by purchasing a 6-pack I could get it for around $9 - $10 a can versus the $13-$17 a can locally. The pictures of the product on Amazon looked the same as they always have. I ordered a case of gloss and a case of semi-gloss. They arrived today. This is what I got. The semi-gloss is the same as it has been for years. The Gloss is a new name, a new look. It says on the can "same DEFT Formula New Name" I want to believe, however, in all the years of using DEFT, there was never a marble/bearing in the gloss cans. A something is rattling around in the new can. Same formula, why is a marble now needed in the same formula? I should be happy, it means more marbles or bearings to add to the coke bottle. I will see. I think DEFT has been sold. I don't care as long as it is as good as the old. By the way las,t time I needed some and could not find DEFT, so I purchased a can each of WATCO crystal; clear Lacquer. Not real sure if I don't like it better. Dries a little faster, but smell even worse than DEFT to me. It says it in more scratch resistant than others.1 point

Yes, a spray gun is way better at atomizing the fluid.. I keep thinking I need to use my spray gun and buy the quart size etc.. way better results, especially on larger surfaced projects. That being said many of my items are most times done as a one off order or very small batches that isn't really worth the time and effort to have to clean the spray equipment etc.. so that is my reasoning behind spray cans.. Cost per oz is way better if you have the ability to use spray equipment. For a small batch of small items such as ornaments.. spray can in my opinion is the way to go.. NOW if I was able to do large batches and was in my production mode to where I was able to spray a few batches per day then that might be different. With the slowed down economy I'm not really been working a lot.. most things are in inventory from years of building a lot of stock.. so the last couple years I've been only working on a few items here and there.. not really any need to do large batches.1 point

Thanks for the shoutout, Jerry. It came out nice. As to your self-sculpture, you seem a bit 'wooden' sitting at the saw. I think when I posted my flags a while back, it was brought up regarding height. My display is an exception to the US flag height rule. I am on staff with NATO, and my display (as are all the flags in our HQ flag plaza/parade grounds) is all on an equal level as a 32-nation military alliance.1 point -
Iv’e used Deft spray Lacquer for years. When it became scarce I started using Minwax spray lacquer. In my opinion, it actually finishes nicer then Deft. Lately though, I’ve been spraying Minwax brushing lacquer. I purchased a spray gun and dilute the brushing lacquer with lacquer thinner. It finishes so much nicer than spray cans.1 point

Deft Finish
OCtoolguy reacted to JTTHECLOCKMAN for a topic
To me there is no better finish than a good coat of lacquer when you want a top coat that is durable and easy to apply. Poly is a plastic and many times it looks like it when applied on a nice piece of wood. I have used Deft for many years but when Lowes stopped carrying it in 2013 and Deft stopped making it I switched to Watco and found that to be as good. I use alot of lacquers over the years. This new can is suppose to be the same formula but there is no talk of it on woodworking sites for proof. everyone tells people to call the company to find out for sure. Why the marble I do not know but to me that is an indication the formula must be different if it needs a strong mixing. You get that with marbles to break up the solids.1 point -
I bought mine, a Dremel, about 13 years ago to install a medicine chest in one of the cherry cabinets in our bathroom. I used the 1/2 moon blade. It worked great. I use the sander part with triangle paper all the time on my small odd-shaped projects. I'd be lost without it. If you already have some Bauer battery driven tools then all you need is the basic tool. You'll love it.1 point

Use to be a lot of good finishes.. but these days with the environmentalist cracking down on anything that might have a smell or anything that doesn't smell but dries they've gotta save the world.. I get it really but at the same time they're making it so we're going to have to pay a higher tax if we fart more than once in a days time, LOL I've done the water base poly in the blue / teal colored can.. used to like the stuff but the last several cans have done nothing but clog up and spit and sputter the stuff and ruin the finish.. I've now been using the Lacquer, and like you I'm finding I like the Lacquer best.. at least for now.. other than the smell.1 point

Thank you, I have the saw kit for the rotary tool but the tool really lacks in power with these saw blades.. It's what I've been using but I feel like the multi tool would have more power and cut a larger area at a time as opposed to the small circle blade. Thank you very much for your input. I'll check out the half moon blade.. I think it's probably the one I was looking at and thinking it'd be the best one I've seen so far.. not having any experience with the tool I thought I'd ask those that have used them.1 point

Kevin, you can get small circular saw blade for the rotatory tool from HF: https://www.harborfreight.com/power-tools/rotary-oscillating-tools/rotary-tool-accessories/6-piece-hss-saw-blade-with-mandrel-set-67224.html If these are not to your liking and you want the oscillating tool, then I would recomend the half moon saw blade, it is very adjustable sod you can adjust the depth of the cut: https://www.harborfreight.com/power-tools/rotary-oscillating-tools/multi-tool-accessories/round-half-moon-blades/3-12-in-bimetal-steel-half-moon-blade-for-oscillating-multi-tools-63131.html1 point

Just my opinion since I've been there done that with many different saw brands.. I suggest running the saw you have a watching Facebook marketplace or craigslist, ebay, and etc. for a good used higher end saw.. Many times a really nice older Hawk, Hegner, Pegas, or Seyco etc pop up at a better price than a new DeWalt.. A lightly used Pegas or Seyco and a moderately used Hawk or Hegner would likely outlast any of those new saws in the price range you're looking at. Many times I've seen the 18" Jet come up on sale for a inbetween price of the DeWalt and the Pegas and they ( last I knew ) are a good saw made in the same plant as the Pegas and Seyco I believe.. They have a bit different of a blade clamping system that you may love or hate.. good news is if you hate it you can buy the pegas clamp upgrade and have the same basic saw as the Pegas I think.. Nice work on the football helmets.. cool idea.. how large are they? I could see those selling good as a Christmas ornament size..1 point

I like to think I'm a self-taught scroller. I picked up the hobby before forums like this existed. Fortunately I discovered and joined a local scroll saw club about 20 years ago and a whole new world opened up for me. Following the advice of the senior members of the club, I subscribed to the scrolling magazines, found on-line sources for patterns, blades & supplies. Later I discovered the forums. IMHO, they are the next best thing to belonging to a local club. So while I did teach myself most of the basics during the years between buying my first scroll saw and joining the club, forums like this have been a tremendous resource for me as I've continued to grow and pick up new things along the way.1 point -
