  1. I finally convinced my doctor that I would be careful going down to my shop, and he convinced my CEO that I could try to scroll again. This piece was made for a very special lady in our lives, she was an Emergency Room nurse for 40 years and her greatest joy was helping anyone. Unfortunately, she succumbed to cancer a while back and we have finally had a chance to honor her. Her usband has her cremains at home on a dresser that she used, so I cut this stand for him to put the urn on. The ladies name was Roseanne and she loved roses, the cross is cut from bloodwood and the base is suger maple, I finished the piece with WATCO oil. Thanks for looking. I have posted this on 2 other sites, sorry if you looked twice.

  3. This is my first Intarsia piece, and yes, it is almost a direct copy of a work I found on-line. For a full descriptive write up see my post in the Intarsia/Segmentation section. Thanks for reading.

  4. Been busy at the scroll saw this month scrolling grandpa's patterns of our seven Min Pins past & present. Now it's time to take a break and give my old back some needed rest.

  5. Cut and sanded now do I stain or paint. If paint do I do black for a silhouette or pastels. Decisions, Decisions, Decisions! lol Thanks to Grampa (Paul) for the great pattern. I truly appreciate your help.

  6. Next month will mark one year that I bought my Dewalt scroll saw and joined this great community of people. I've made quite a few projects in that time and received very helpful, valuable information from the members here. Just wanted to thank you all very much and special thanks to "grandpa" for his time and effort putting up with me to get some beautiful patterns of our Min Pins, past & present. You all Rock!!

If I may make a suggestion. Never work with measurements when cutting sides. Work with a jig that has stop blocks. If you place your blank against the stop blocks they have to be the same length. If you use pencil marks and try to line up to blade you can be off just enough to throw measurements off. There are many jigs on the net to show. And of course that 45 degree cut needs to be accurate also. Good luck.

Ah yes, designer fire wood!! Sure glad to see that I am not the only one that has problems with making frames! Some times I surprise myself and the 4 pieces turn out perfect! Even with using a 45 degree slid, I just cannot get the right measurements on each one! I know it is something that I am not doing right and it is not the rulers or tape measures being off, just what I am not doing right! Hang in there, it will come to you! Erv

Looks good. Guess you were going for that singed burnt look as a finish. If miters are not square means the pieces were not equal on the opposite sides. Also needs to be 45 degrees accurately if making 4 sided. Good luck.

Just an empty link for me For me, sharing a picture is "Drag files here to attach, or choose files" click on "choose files" the "choose files" opens a dialogue box to upload a file to this website once the file is uploaded, then the "insert file" must be clicked on. Note, the "insert file" is not visible until the cursor is directly over it.

  14. I only had photography as a hobby for too many years to count. I suck at trying to build things because I have the attention span of a knat but found scrolling doable and could understand directions from the good people in this group. Never really got much from the YouTube videos. I agree, giving away my work is rewarding and doubtful if I'd ever sell anything.

Rather than buying another saw, ir might be just a Saturday afternoon's work to fix yours. More tha likely it is in need of a good service and with the videos available from Gwinnette Woodworkers Guild, it's not difficult. Not many tools needed. We are here to help.

  16. I too am a self taught scroller from way back. Forums like this were not there but there were some old forums that I am sure a few members here recall back in the day. There were many pattern makers that have pasted away but their work still lives on. This all paved the way for more talent. Hopefully along the way I did help a few people out with some of what I picked up along my journey down the path of this hobby which has been fun and rewarding. If asked a question I try my best to pass information on. Now as we all know there is always more than one way to do just about anything so the more ideas one has to chose from hope they can make up their own minds and follow their own paths. But bottom line is always have some fun along the way. Making a few $$$ is a bonus in the long run. Giving away our work is also so rewarding in many ways. Happy Scrolling.

  18. I like to think I'm a self-taught scroller. I picked up the hobby before forums like this existed. Fortunately I discovered and joined a local scroll saw club about 20 years ago and a whole new world opened up for me. Following the advice of the senior members of the club, I subscribed to the scrolling magazines, found on-line sources for patterns, blades & supplies. Later I discovered the forums. IMHO, they are the next best thing to belonging to a local club. So while I did teach myself most of the basics during the years between buying my first scroll saw and joining the club, forums like this have been a tremendous resource for me as I've continued to grow and pick up new things along the way.

  20. You are correct, this forum and many others are a learning experience for everyone... even seasoned scrollers like me that has been scrolling for many years learn new ways of doing things.. you can teach a old dog new tricks.. but it depends on how stubborn the dog is as to whether he is using the new tricks he has learned or continues in his old tried and true method..

  21. I bought my scroll saw about 4 years ago, joined this forum. Like you said, I learned from this great, tolerant and supportive group of people. I thank/blame them/you all for helping me learn this hobby and contributing to my addiction.
