    Ribbon Box

Here is my latest project. I bought the book with this pattern several years ago and looked at it several times. I finally decided it was time to try it. I'm not real good at compound cutting, but it went better than expected.

  3. No brushes to check in the armature as its an AC motor; I'm not sure if its cap-start or cap-run, but it has a capacitor. I replaced the several components in my Hegner's control box some time ago as I thought I had a problem. You will need some skill with a soldering iron to do this, but it's not terrible difficult. My saw is a 93 22VS, I don't know why the controller parts would be different from one variable speed to another, so check before ordering. These are the parts I ordered from DigiKey: 1 ‎1993-1229-ND‎ ‎PC16SH-07CP04-104A2020-TA‎ POT 100K OHM LINEAR Shipped By Digi-Key Electronics 2 Immediate 2.75000 $5.50 2 ‎S39KCACT-ND‎ ‎RNMF14FTC39K0‎ RES 39K OHM 1/4W 1% AXIAL Shipped By Digi-Key Electronics 2 Immediate 0.10000 $0.20 3 ‎294KXBK-ND‎ ‎MFR-25FBF52-294K‎ RES 294K OHM 1/4W 1% AXIAL Shipped By Digi-Key Electronics 2 Immediate 0.10000 $0.20 4 ‎280KXBK-ND‎ ‎MFR-25FBF52-280K‎ RES 280K OHM 1/4W 1% AXIAL Shipped By Digi-Key Electronics 2 Immediate 0.10000 $0.20 The resistors weren't bad, just got them as things are tight in there and I figured I might as well replace them as they would be in the way of replacing the potentiometer and might get damaged. The pot is the correct size and values, but it does have an 'off' click position at the very slowest speed; however, that 'off' position does nothing for the speed, it just keeps running at super slow. I doubt I have pics anymore. You may be able to repair the pot with contact cleaner and compressed air without disassembling things. I also cannot guarantee this will fix things. I'm pretty sure that the controller is a variable frequency drive and that is likely why the cost is so high. Variable frequency drives are the only correct way to control the speed of an AC motor. Hope that all helps.

  4. Do you have any kind of an electronic shop around? It could be as simple as the potentiometer. Maybe even a computer repair place, tv repair, or tool repair shop would take a look at it for you. I would take the speed control off and take it and ask. Any type of place that has some electronics knowledge and testing equipment.

    New Harbor freight saw.

Normally I am not a big fan of Harbor Freight power tools. Although they have stepped it up a bit. They have a New scroll saw. a 22" tilting arm saw https://www.harborfreight.com/22-in-variable-speed-scroll-saw-59416.html A tilting arm saw for a meer $249, It is their Bauer line of tools. Has anyone tried one of these? I am sure it is coming from the the Chinese clone factory. so buyer beware. It may be a good entry level saw .

  6. Hello scroll saw village. I relatively new to scrolling. I took over a the book cutting part of my mother in laws book cutting business after my father in laws passing. I am loving it! He was using an old dremmel 1680 and after 8 months the noise and vibration was getting the best of me. Just bought a used Dewalt 788 on marketplace. Cut two books and discovered the knocking problem. Gonna work on that soon. Looks like an easy fix. I just found this site and am excited to explore all the knowledge and experience that is here. Quick question. The books I cut are between 1-1/2 inches. I’m using a 7tpi blade on highest speed. Does that sound like the right setup? thanks Ben

    You Ask Why

You ask: why does one need more than one scrollsaw? Right now I am wishing I had two again. And I promise, momma, if I can have a second one I will never sell it! I always have more than one project going. Right now I have two. One requires inlay. But I can not work on it because once I set a saw for the depth of inlay I want it can not be moved to a different degree of tilt. You would never get perfectly back to the degree of the original set. So before I can continue in the project requiring an inlay, I have to wait until the paint and glue tries on another project. If I had two saws I could keep on working. When I find the right deal, I will have a second saw again. Plus it is nice to have two or more saw so you do not have to change the size or type of blade so often. You can just move back and forth between saws.

The Pittsburgh Rockler carries it. I typically get it at a local hardwood lumber yard, but they haven't stocked it in any quantity for some the past several years. I bought some on-line, for the first time, a couple years ago, but I can't recall the name of the place.

I used to get it at Woodcraft, but they as well as Rockler have stopped selling it. I'm not sure of where else you can source it, but I bet there is a place online that will have it.

    Wood sources

I always get mine locally at http://theworkbench.com/ in full 60" x 60" sheets... I mostly only use 1/8".. They were out of stock for a long time due to the covid? stuff so I ordered a couple boxes of 12" x 12" from Cherokee https://www.cherokeewood.com/ and while it was more money I also found the sheets I received never had any of the football patches.. maybe I was lucky that order or maybe they sort it out of the smaller pieces.. I was really impressed with the quality.. I believe it was free shipping back then but maybe that has changed. Being I sell online and have a good idea of shipping cost I believe I was paying nearly the same price as I get it locally but the shipping would be extra cost.. Not sure I made that clear.. basically I feel like the plywood is priced the same but I paid extra because of shipping which is why it cost me more. However it was nice to not have to process ( cut down to usable sizes ).. which the local source will do but they also charge that extra for too which if I wanted the 12 x 12 pieces then the price would be really comparable. I mostly only use it for ornaments so the 12 x 12 worked out good, but if you're doing portraits then larger sizes might be a better option. The convenience of not having to cut down the big sheets has made me almost consider just buying it from these guys and paying the little extra. I also really like the "project panels" from Home Depot.. though a bit more money.. very nice to work with and my laser cuts it much better than BBply. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Columbia-Forest-Products-5-32-in-x-1-ft-x-1-ft-7-in-PureBond-Maple-Plywood-Project-Panel-10-Pack-4940/312284408 They have maple, birch, walnut and maybe a few others.

    New Harbor freight saw.

I would think the Pegas clamps would work.. I doubt they re-engineered the rocker arms just to throw another cheap brand on the market. Likely most all these saws are more just assembled using existing parts.

    New Harbor freight saw.

There was a nice "write up" in the Fine Woodworking magazine on the Grizzy's new saw. I like the bigger table.....I wonder if the Pegas clamps would fit on either the Harbor freight one or the Grizzly https://www.grizzly.com/products/grizzly-21-variable-speed-scroll-saw-with-foot-pedal/g0969?gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjwiuC2BhDSARIsALOVfBIf3jC4TB1j3x5b6jmWS8MKlZ15GPiYo53cNPa_5w8lwpAbFUKbanIaAgvmEALw_wcB Maybe @Denny Knappen would know.

  27. Welcome to the fourm. I had not heard of book cutting before. I searched it and it looks pretty fascinating. When you get settled maybe you can tell us how it is done.

  28. I would start with the easy things first. Check the brushes and armature. The brushes for wear and/or glazing. Check the armature for carbon buildup and/or not being " shiny ". If the armature looks damaged check for debris between the brass leads. If the brushes or armature have issues,it will affect the speed control.

  30. Welcome to the Village from North Carolina. I don't cut books and my saw is a Pegas, so my advice is only to say if you are happy with the results then it is the right setup for you. I adjust the speed to a comfortable setting where I can cut accurately. I also have a tendency to cut with the smallest blade possible to get the job done. The number of teeth per inch can be affected by the type and thickness of material you are cutting. The blade needs to clear the sawdust (in your case, paper cuttings) from the kerf to cut properly. The knowledge on this forum is vast and I'm sure there will be someone to comment with a lot better advice than I can provide. We love pictures here so don't hesitate to post your projects. It allows for constructive criticism as well as inspiration for others on the forum.

    New Harbor freight saw.

I just compared the Bauer and the recent Rikon 10-622VS. They are the exact same saw. Made in the same factory, but went out different doors. We have the Rikon 22" in my store and I have used it. I think it is a great saw; in fact I am seriously considering selling my 788 and getting the Rikon. The only difference I can see is the Bauer does not have the dust collection option. There is a harbor freight across the street, so I may pop over there after we open and check it out.

  35. My local store says they have several in stock.. according to the website. I need to go there at some point to pick up a new multimeter as the free one they used to give out 15 years ago quit working on me.. go figure.. I have a battery drain on one of my Jeeps and also need to test the coil on one of my tractors.. Never realized just how much I use those meters until I don't have one. I even had a back-up but it didn't work either, lol.. I think my son said he hooked something up wrong and blew the fuse in them.. turns on.. just won't test anything so not a battery issue. Anyway, maybe I'll take a trip there in the next few days. My store is usually good at having inventory but not great about getting a display out very quickly.. so they probably do have several still boxed up. It's kinda a smaller store than other towns have so that is probably why.

The sun shines though my bay door in the mornings when I have it open. My magnifier light is in the sun for a short period. It may be a good idea to cover it during that short period when the sun is shining through. Glad you didn't suffer any additional damage than a few books.

Now that is really, really nice. Would love to know a few more details, like size, woods used, finish, etc. Also a peek at the box with cover off to side. Love to see the many projects posted, but also like to know more of the What, Where, When, and Why about said projects. I feel I can always learn something! Thanks

Well, I have two belt/disc sanders of different sizes, and I have two drill presses of different sizes. I still have my 21" Excal, tucked away. I should find some space for it and perhaps just put a #9 FD UR blade on it for some quick cutting and then the 30" Pegas for my fine work...

  49. One of her patterns was the Pattern a Month project for August. She was even offering advice two weeks before she passed from her hospital bed. It certainly made my "win" bittersweet. I received notice about my win the same day that her husband mentioned she was in a coma. She passed two days later.
