Sun Rider try
MTCowpoke22 and 5 others reacted to heppnerguy for a topic
I have had some interesting time cutting this pattern. When I saw Kris Martinson's new sun Rider pattern I not only really enjoyed it but it also caught my eye because the area that is Sun Rider is seen, looks like the area of Arizona where I now live and so I mentioned in my comment on his post and he was so generous to send me a copy of his pattern and told me to go ahead and give it a try. There were a lot of things in the pattern I really did not understand how he was able to do them but I gave it my best shot and came out with one I am mostly satisfied with. I cut in from 1/4 BB Ply and mostly used a #1 Pegus spiral blade. A lot of the pattern parts are quite small and I had to use the drill bits I had to make the entry holes. It was a rather fun one to cut, and I liked the challenges it presented me, and the total time to complete this project was three hours. I wish to once again thank Kris for the pattern and allowing me to post it here also. Dick heppnerguy6 points -
I wanted to scroll this verse in plaques for my two college age Grandsons. My daughter has it hanging in her office and the boys have remarked that they like the verse but that the plaque treatment is too "Girly" for them. These are cut from a single "generous" 4-quarters blank of live-edge cherry yielding 4 blanks roughly 3/8" thick. The four were then edge squared, planed and joined as a single piece - backed by 1'2" birch ply. They are "drying" after a coat of Danish oil and I will apply Shellac when they are ready.6 points

One for my grandson
Old Joe and one other reacted to heppnerguy for a topic
I have a grandson that had the oportunity to meet a WWl Veteran who had come to his grade school on Veterans day and talked with his class about his experience serving in the army. My grandson's interest in WWl really was sparked and he started to study about it and has become really knowlegable about it and told me that man was 104 years old at the time he came to the school. I had been looking at this pattern for quite some time as I thought the picture told a story without words. I told my grandson about it and said I would make him a piece with a picture of a dressed soldlier in uniform for him if he was interested. He became instantly excited and so I got it to him last week. Here is the results of my effort.2 points -
These two free patterns came from Judy Gale Roberts Website. They are Intarsia Patterns I made into Painted Segmented wall hangings that I will be sending to my son and daughter. Again, I cut the patterns from one piece of 1x10 clear premium pine board but added Intarsia techniques to sculpture as well as raise and lower parts to improve the presentation. I made no changes to the patterns except to delete the “floor” area under Santas’ feet. All cutting, painting and finishing details for these pieces are exactly the same as my previous post: Copycat Family Christmas decoration Gifts, so I will not repeat here. All I will add however is; Hoot was a hoot to cut and paint. Nom 7" x 12" Nom 10" x 12" Thanks for reading. Comments and Critiques always welcome.2 points

First time using "Live Edge Cherry"

Nicely done. I've said many times that text is one of the hardest things to scroll well, especially fonts such as what are in that pattern. You did an excellent job!2 points -
I just joined and figured I would introduce myself. I am Seth, and I live in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. I've been scrolling for about eight years but have been Woodworking for most of my life. I hope to learn new stuff here and share my knowledge.1 point

Great Find
barb.j.enders reacted to Hawk for a topic
My Daughter and son in law cut down a tree in three yard earlier this spring. They live in southern Ohio. I asked them to set aside a couple of logs for me being a wood holder that I am. Anyhow I picked them up last week and has a chance to run the smaller one thru the bandsaw. I'm not the best at this and my bandsaw is not great either, but I got them closer to project size. I got quite a surprise after the first cut. I'm thinking spalted maple? Now all I need is a planner or drum sander. (Ugh) Anyhow, they need more dry time so I can figure out how I'll get these project ready.1 point -
Alex Fox Basket C259 Modified
Dan reacted to Denny Knappen for a topic
An Alex Fox Basket C259 Modified. This is one of his most recent patterns. Rather than 12 rings, I cut seven. I used 1/4" Mahogany 8" square. Cut on the Pegas 21" Scroll Saw using Pegas a #1 MGT blade. Sanding, gluing one ring at a time, one coat spray Lacquer Clear Gloss, sanding again, and a final coat. Comments welcome1 point -
I had about 60bdft of spalted maple given to me about 13 years ago.. I love it as it's beautiful wood but at the same time it isn't all that great for the type of scroll projects I make because the dark spots in it distract from the actual cutting itself and in some cases it is hard to tell the difference from the actual cutting and the colors of the wood until you get up close to it.. from a distance it all blends together I guess is what I'm saying. I still have about 30bdft of it I think, LOL.. beautiful for certain projects that IMO are not scroll sawn..1 point

Nice! I would agree it looks like spalted maple, I would love to get my hands on some 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4 for some projects! Hopefully your daughter has more of that for you!1 point -
Frank, you have done a beautiful job on those, RJ1 point

That's harder to do than it seems. Usually it comes off looking contrived. Also you don't have a lot of extra length to work with. I would leave it as is. Would hate to risk spoiling what is very nice work.1 point -

Yes, thankfully we do get beautiful fall colors. We’re in a drought right now which may affect the colors/duration this year. I actually used a combination of oil based stains and water based dyes to get the color and covered it with clear semigloss spray enamel. I hang different things on this spot for different seasons/holidays. It’s out of the rain and gets almost no direct sun so everything has held up great so for several years now. It’s about 3’ x 4’. To make it I planed some old weathered pressure treated fence boards, cut one end on a 45, lined them up and drew the leaf pattern freehand and cut the leaf pattern on each board with the scroll saw. I used a Kregg pocket hole jig to join the boards along with one fence board down the middle on the back. It was fun to make it up as I went along with no real plan or pattern.1 point

How would you go about finding a scroll saw club if there is one in your area. I am in the vicinity of Cobb, Douglas, and Paulding County Georgia.1 point

I'm with Bill. Text of any type is nerve wracking since there is zero tolerance. You captured it well on some good looking stock.1 point -
Oh come on, you got to give us a little more!!! Simple pattern yes, but I'm betting it wasn't a simple project. I see it hanging on and outside wall. How big? what wood? what finish? will it hold up in the weather? BTW, very nice. Looks great on the wall. Do you actually get fall colored leaves in Alabama? Here in Florida, Palms stay green all rear and our Florida Oaks drop scriveled up dead dirty things that do not look like a leaf only to be replaced by new green leaves immediately.1 point
