  2. Another member, Scott M, recently posted here with an image of his version of "Skull" by Janevski. He did a great job and inspired me to give it a try. As a relatively new scroller I was intimidated by the large number of cuts required in this design and wasn't sure if I could pull it off. To up the risk factor even more I decided to try a spiral blade for the first time. What the heck, the videos make spirals look easy to use! What could go wrong? With a new #2 spiral and a piece of 1/4 inch BB I dove in headfirst and began cutting. To my surprise, like the videos show, cutting with spiral blades is easier in some ways. The piece doesn't need to be rotated, and I was able to work much faster at higher RPMs than I ever did with a straight blade. To be fair, the design doesn't require much accuracy except where cuts run close to each other. I did make a few mistakes and had one breakout but am happy with the result.

  4. I had cataract surgery for both eyes in June. My vision has changed. I am still trying to adjust for scrolling. It is close, but not quite the same. The magnification I get with reading glasses and the magnifier lens doesn't quite work anymore. I am going to try stronger reading glasses. Has anyone else had this happen?

  5. I used to live in up state NY now I live on the NC/VA border. Not as cold as Ohio but cold enough. Heating in an uninsulate space is a waste of time and money. So is trying to raise the temperature 20 or more degrees over a short period of time. So if you get an insulated shed you still need to heat it 24x7. I keep my detached garage shop at 55 all winter and raise it to until at least 60 to work. Old fingers can’t stand the cold.

  13. I am having a litte problem making out how they really look, on my computer screen but I know from everything I have seen you do, that they are most likely very well done. Wish I had been able to see they more clearly. Dick heppnerguy

    Eye gotcha!

I saw the pattern and thought it was very interesting but not one I was interested in cutting myself. I have to agree with you on your wood choices as I like how it came out with it. I am a little amazed had how the tear looked so real too. You have been doing some really interesting project and I always enjoy seeing your work. My shop time is a little slow due to the hot temperatures we are having here. Yesterday was the hottest temperature ever recorded in Southern Arizona in the month of October with a 113 degrees. It should be cooling down pretty soon. Dick heppnerguy

  15. Nice project. Looks quite good. I am proud of you for trying the spiral blades as I have to agree with you about the ease and quickness for using them. I do not come on line very often lately so I missed seeing you join up with us here. I wish to extend to you a WELCOME and hope you continue to really enjoy scrolling and posting your projects here for all of us to enjoy too. Keep up the nice work and always remember to have fun. 18. I had both eyes done too. My sight how is 20-20 but now I need glass' to do close work. I got a prescription glass for computer work. I use these glass' for scrollsawing and they work better than over the counter reading glass'. I just make sure I have excellent lighting.

  19. I've had my new lenses for over a year. I have not had any issues with scrolling or anything in the shop. I don't wear glasses 90% of the time, only putting them on when I go outdoors, the same way I have done for years. I like to do a bit of competitive shooting, and so far, with handguns, I can shoot with or without prescription glasses. Shooting rifles with optics is not an issue, but I haven't had time to figure out iron sights yet. I studied the issues with different lens types, focal distances, and nearsightedness vs. farsightedness. I chose the nearsighted lenses with the highest contrast. I used what I think of as the 90% rule and asked myself, "What do I do 90% of the time, and do I want to wear glasses while I am doing it?" This choice was the opposite of most people's choices, and I had to explain my choices repeatedly to medical personnel. I have been nearsighted my entire life. Changing to farsightedness would significantly disrupt my daily routine, and then there are the reading glasses. I don't want to wear glasses whenever I need to look at something up close. So far, I have only made one adjustment. Because the focal length was closer, I had to move my computer monitors closer. I use two large monitors, and it was a pain to figure out how to mount them so I could read both screens. I bought some prescription polarized sunglasses for flying radio-controlled aircraft. Now that my prescription is not going to change, I decided it would be worth the money. Wow, what a difference! I can see much clearer with the polarized lenses. Now, I can look at the sky all day and not come home with my eyes feeling worn out.

  20. I have been retired for 22 years and boy has it gone by quickly. You will soon see what I mean. I enjoy looking at your projects as all are done very nicely. We have been fighting a record hot summer and finally got some relief from the 100 degree up to 116 all summer long to finally down in the 90s. But all of a sudden it is back to 104 to 113 every day again. Makes going to the shop a little bit on the 'not today' basis. I am glad you made it a point to take a break from the chores and hit the shop and produce some really nice projects. I really like every one of them and thank you for posting them for us to see also Dick heppnerguy

    Old man winter is coming

I bought a shed from the Amish and then finished it out to suit my needs. It has electric and heat, quite cozy in the winter.
