    Funky Owl

Well, here it is. I am very happy with this one! Woods used - Purple Heart, Butternut, White Limba, Yellowheart, Canary Wood, Wenge, Aromatic Cedar, Orange Osage, Zebra wood, Cherry & reclaimed Elm. Cut with #5 MG blades. Finish is mineral oi/beeswax mixture & buffed. This will be heading to my niece - the one that grabbed me the purple heart- for her birthday at the end of the month. Everything for it seemed to fall into place. Her getting me the wood. It is an owl and she loves owls. It is her 30th!

  2. An Alex Fox Basket C261 Modified. I used 1/4" Beech 8" square. Cut on the Pegas Scroll Saw using Pegas #1 MGT blades. After sanding with a Mac Mop, glue each ring, spray with two coats Lacquer Clear Gloss, and light sanding between coats. Comments welcome.

    A Couple of Outlaws

I really don’t do too many Baltic Birch portraits anymore, as I have been working more with thicker hardwoods. That said, a friend asked if I had ever done any with Johnny Cash or Waylon Jennings, or if not, would I consider doing them. So I have some 1/4” BB, checked Charles Dearing’s site, found some cool patterns, and with some minor variations came up with these two. The Waylon Jennings has some very delicate bridges, which were a little nerve wracking.

  7. So, I did and posted this project a few years back but decided to try it again and add lights to it. Baltic birch wood and spiral blades used. They both have backers made out of scrap plexie glass, but the brown one, the glass is from an old X-Ray view box that was being trashed at my hospital. People thought I was crazy for dumpster diving for it and I told them that it would come in handy one day. I love the way it hides the wires. The blue one, I used so spray "frost" on it. It doesn't hide the wires as good as the other but still cool, if you ask me.

    JUST SO YOU KNOW

I first bought these from my local Michael's.. https://www.michaels.com/product/uni-posca-pc-3m-fine-tip-paint-marker-set-10603258?srsltid=AfmBOopmc5Rvi3J9VAK2irKQUbCWHP1QWT4pmf6PbNprI5rkGajU0OpYi4c Then at Sam's club I run across these. These have some nice color varieties but the tip is a bit too large for some of the fine details I need so i've been searching and looking at this same brand but in a fine tip marker. I think I might try the dual tip ones but can't seem to find any local and hate to order something I don't want too, LOL https://www.amazon.com/ArtSkills-Permanent-Paint-Markers-18-Count/dp/B08DKBDP4G Looking for a link I see Sams now has the dual tip only but are out of stock. I think they're different colors than what I have in my set too and I'd like to get the same thing just in a fine or dual tip. Also worth mentioning that you can unscrew ( usually left hand threads ) these markers and clean them out to refill with whatever bulk crafts paint you like.. You'll just need to figure out how much to dilute the paints. In some cases I've just dipped the marker tip into paint I wanted to use as well. I just get better details with painting with a marker than I do with a brush... maybe just the cheap crappy brushes that I buy? I don't know but I prefer the markers over brushing unless I'm doing a large area then I use brush or spray paint.

    Simple Monkey Pattern

I need a simple monkey pattern to make cutouts from 1/2-3/4 thick wood about 3 inches tall. I want something a child could play with and not be too concerned about breaking. I have not been able to find one that will work for me. Do you have any ideas?

    JUST SO YOU KNOW

Just so you I have been doing something. I am finished with the Halloween candy boxes (Alex Fox Pattern). I am so done! I have three more cut out, but I do not intend to finish them. Maybe next year. I enjoy the cutting, the painting, not so much. I have got to fill them with candy and wait time the time to ship them. So done with the painting. Painting sucks!

  17. @Wichman Thank you again, I will try that tomorrow. I'm going to pop open a cold Sammy Adams "Octoberfest" and watch my N.Y. YANKEES. They're back home at the STADIUM, so I hope they will go 2 up tonight. Rick

  18. Have you tried the File > open recent. Option? That will show the last file you worked on. If there is a file with the name already there then "save as" and add a 1 to the file name.
    1 point
  19. @Wichman Thank you Wichman. I actually did try to save it as "inkscape SVG (*.svg) ". When I hit save, inkscape comes back and says there already is a file that exists under that name, then asks if I would like to over ride it, when I say yes, it appears to be saved, but I can't find the file anywhere. This didn't happen until the WMF box appeared some time ago, that makes me think that somewhere along the line, these chubby little fingers of mine hit a wrong key. Thank you for trying to clear me up.

  20. I believe you are trying to save the file as a "Windows meta file", .wmf; inkscape will try to save as the last file type that was used. When you go to save the file, at the first screen go to the "save as type" box and select "inkscape SVG (*.svg) ". This should put you on the right path.

    DeWalt scroll saw

Hi George, Welcome to the Village! Back in the day when I was using a DeWalt saw I had same thing and as Bill said.. check the switch. For me back in the day I could blow the switch out but it eventually got to the point where that didn't work either so I had to buy a new switch and I always did use a foot switch but that doesn't stop dust getting into that switch. What I found to work great for me was to cut up a old rubber / latex glove and place it over the power switch then I used painters tape and taped / sealed up around the switch. Never had another issue with it for another 6 years until I sold it to a friend.. and I believe it is still going strong.

    DeWalt scroll saw

Dewalts are known for flaky switches. Fine sawdust gets in and fouls the contacts. Take the switch cover off and blow the sawdust out as thoroughly as possible. See if that solves your problem. If it does, I suggest getting a footswitch, which will help keep the problem from recurring.

    Flattening stock

I actually dyed the whole thing by dipping it in the solution. My mistake was not allowing for airflow across both sides while it finished drying. It was amazing how quickly and thoroughly it flattened back out by simply turning it over. I didn't allow for airflow the 2nd time either, but it came out flat.

    Flattening stock

And that was because you stained one side. It is like when you use veneers. To equalize the absorption of water and moisture to both sides of a project. The same goes for finishing. If you seal only one side you can open yourself to warping of the project. This why dipping is a great way to finish our scrollsawn projects. and why I never had a warping problem. Plus like I said fret sawing helps relieve stress points within the wood

    Flattening stock

Wood will do some crazy and unpredictable things. I cut a small plaque out of some 1/2" red oak once. The wood was very dry and stable. It was a cutoff from a larger piece, from another project and had been in my shop for a long time. I colored it with some water based dye. It was pretty much dry to the touch by the time I was ready to leave the shop for the day. Without thinking, I set it down flat, on old t-shirt, good side up, and left. I came back the next morning and the piece had curled up like a potato chip. I had never seen this type of extreme warping in such a small piece before. It was actually kind of shocking. My first instinct was to toss the piece into the scrap bin, but decided to turn it over and see what happened. So I laid it face down and left alone for another day. When I next checked it, it was flat as it was originally. It has been hanging in my shop for several years and hasn't move a bit since.

  37. I haven’t been here in sometime, though I still scroll regularly, I don’t get online as often. I have been expanding into more hardwoods, though I will still cut an occasional portrait in Baltic Birch. This first one started from the Treehouse pattern by the incomparable Charles Hand, though I took a few liberties to make it unique. Instead of BB I used a 5/8” African Rosewood board and cut a large vertical oval with a recessed angle cut. I extended the tree, added the girl in the swing, added the foliage, carved the bark into whole tree, along with a couple of knotholes. Then I cut a piece of 1/4” BB to fit behind the recessed cut and I inlaid the boy with a kite, his dog, the two cats, butterfly, the hanging birdhouse, and the 4 birds over the treehouse. Hope you all like it! This one took a bit of time to do. I will add a couple of other recent projects on another post. Incidentally, other than the inlay work and the recessed cut, almost all of the rest of this was done with spiral blades and I used my Pegas saw. The carving was done mostly using a Foredom power carver, and some by hand.

  41. Once again, I am asking my INKSCAPE firends for help. The box below started to appear on my screen recently. It pops up when I try to save something that I am working on, in this case, it was a picture of entwined wedding rings that I am trying to change the photo to a red line drawing. I don't even know if that is possible, I am pretty much computer illiterate, I guess I was born 78 years too soon. I thank you in advance for any assistance. The title of the box is WMF Output. Rick
