    Hummingbird lamps

I've been off the radar for a while. We had company come from NH. We had enticed them to come and visit for the "Fall For Greenville" festival. It got postponed because of the hurricane. They decided to come anyway. We visited Falls Park and the next day we drove up to the Tryon Int'l Equestrian Center just over the NC border. As we drove north to the center, we saw many massive broken off trees along the road. It looks like several may have laid across the road at some point but had been cleared. We were only about 10 miles south of Lake Lure but decided they didn't needed any tourists viewing the devastation. While they were here, they fell in love with my hummingbird lamp. As a consolation for missing the festival, I would make them one. It took about 4 days and I used up the last of my lexan. I was glad I had the original to work off of for the measurements. The 1/8" Lexan is easy to cut on the table saw with a 80 tooth cross cuit blade but it does make a mess with all the chips/dust. It becomes static and sticks to everything. Starting to think about making some Xmas gifts.

  2. Alright, this is the last and final project I will scroll because I'm selling the saw on Monday and switching my hobby to casting with epoxy resin. Made over a couple of hundred items and had a lot of fun but it's time for a change.

  4. Hawk

    Me, Grumpy ?

Every now and then I do a project that makes me smile and I enjoy. This one has been on my list for a few years ( I worked at Disney World back in the 80's). Finally had a week free to make it. It'll go on the wall next to Donkey Kong. Chris

  5. Mighty fine. One in there reminded me of the "grow rocks", maybe it was, "grow crystals". You got a little envelope of tiny rocks, put them in water and they "grew". Does anyone remember those? I would keep the saw, looks like the two hobbies could work together.

  6. Well, I have had my Hawk for a few weeks now. If I had to choose between the Hawk or the Hegner, I would keep the Hegner. Tensioning and clamps are so much simpler and less cumbersome than the Hawk. Hawk is a good saw, not sorry I have it, but it seems to me they could have done better on the clamps. Tensioning is not hard to figure out, but a whole lot more parts than the Hegner and does not seem necessary to me. The only real plus that the Hawk has over the Hegner is the table size.

  7. Grim Reaper In A Potion Bottle I made this one larger—about five inches wide. These are a pain to make, mainly because the three layers don't match size-wise or shape, and I have to do a lot of sanding and filing to smooth the edges. My grandson claimed this one on sight.

  8. Good luck with the new hobby. Color sells. People love colors. Basically this is how many pen blanks are made also taking back to my new hobby. Mixing of colored dyes within resins is a timing thing and to get the timing right along with the right heat is tricky. There is a huge market in making pen blanks.

  10. Yea this is a matter of opinion. I do not see why the Hawk clamps are more cumbersome. So simple to take out and replace blade and slap back in with no tools needed. hegner you better not loose that wrench. I had both and when I switched to Hawk it was night and day and love both my Hawks. But again it is what you learned on that we gravitate back to. I bet if you started with a Hawk you would changed your mind. But I could be wrong.

    Christmas Gnomes set

I think last Christmas gnomes were everywhere: toys, cards, decoration, some household items in the form of a gnomes. So I decided to make my variant of Christmas decoration - set of 6 Christmas Gnomes, recommended to use 2 types of wood or stains, stand and hanger ring are optional. I cut the first one, I wish I have more time, but it is time to make next pattern, it will be Christmas box Video of making project - https://youtu.be/FPz30vl_c7o Christmas gnomes pattern

  25. Was referring to the first HF scroll saw we purchased, the green one. A starter saw but not even close to the new bauer saw.

  28. I have an older EX-21 with no dust collection. It is a simple box that catches the sawdust and small piece that catches it before it fall on my leg. It is real crude and if I was doing more scrolling I would add dust collection of some sort but this works. I have a ceiling fan that runs too.

  32. Another member, Scott M, recently posted here with an image of his version of "Skull" by Janevski. He did a great job and inspired me to give it a try. As a relatively new scroller I was intimidated by the large number of cuts required in this design and wasn't sure if I could pull it off. To up the risk factor even more I decided to try a spiral blade for the first time. What the heck, the videos make spirals look easy to use! What could go wrong? With a new #2 spiral and a piece of 1/4 inch BB I dove in headfirst and began cutting. To my surprise, like the videos show, cutting with spiral blades is easier in some ways. The piece doesn't need to be rotated, and I was able to work much faster at higher RPMs than I ever did with a straight blade. To be fair, the design doesn't require much accuracy except where cuts run close to each other. I did make a few mistakes and had one breakout but am happy with the result.

  33. It took approximately 300 years, but I made my first candle arch. So. Much. Trial. And. Error. Debated painting vs spray lacquer up until the very end. Finally laziness won out, and they got the lacquer. I'm pretty sure the base is cherry. More photos Pattern: Regu https://www.ebay.ca/itm/262775400771
