    Zero Clearence Top

Formica/laminate, like those used on countertops, might work if you can figure out a way to hold it flat and still be able to remove it. In my limited experience, zero clearance on a scroll saw does not stay zero clearance for long. Whatever you use, you will need to be able to change it from time to time.

  9. I just went to the website and added it to my cart and then hitting the checkout button screen it gives me the option of 1 year for 49.99 or two years for 59.99.. For someone like me that scrolls a lot and burns through a DeWalt in one to one and a half years that might be a good deal since I can't even source the bearings to rebuild one that cheap.. I believe it cost me around $180 way back in 2014 which was the last time I rebuilt the Dewalt I had and then I sold it in 2017. The EX-21 parts cost me nearly $200 or maybe a little more than $200 back in 2020 when I rebuilt that.. I have about 550 hours run time on the hour meter on the EX-21 and have rebuilt it twice now.. and it's getting there for a third time.. Oddly enough.. 550 hours on the new Hawk I bought.. still kickin up dust like it was new.. no parts has been needed yet.

    Foot Pedal Mounting

  12. As most of you know I picked up the Bauer 22" from HF a few weeks back. I upgraded the blade holders to the Pegas shortly thereafter. Started my first serious piece this week. Russ Beard's Viking Warrior ( # 2023-038). I can say the Bauer is doing great. I'm cutting with a Flying Dutchman Polar 2/0 running at about 4 on the speed dial. On my Delta P-20 I was totally a top feed guy for projects like this, and the Bauer does fine ( especially after I upgraded to the Pegas). But in trying to venture outside my comfort zone and put the Bauer through its paces I'm doing more bottom feed on the Viking. And I gotta say it's going pretty good. The pin at the back that holds the arm up holds it high enough that seeing the entry hole on the bottom of the piece is quite easy, even as small as they are ( using a #71 drill bit). As you can see I have a short dowel handy to release the pin to let the upper arm drop. All in all the Bauer is doing great!

  13. Just finished this beautiful Russ Beard Pattern, it was a double stack on 4mm Birch Plywood, cut with a Niqua 1 Pin Less blade, soaked in a BLO/Mineral Spirit Mixture, finished with a few coats of clear lacquer. Black backer and a second backed smaller than the original cut to give a shadow line effect. I cannot control the final colour appearance that the wood takes on, but I will accept it and am Blessed and Grateful that I am able to produce work like this.

    Zero Clearence Top

I'm planning to add a zero clearance top to my Hawk. Planning to make it slightly wider and just as long as the current top and something thst would go over the current top. Just wondering from those who have done something like this, what material did you use. My first thought is clear acrylic, just wondering if there was something better? Chris

    Zero Clearence Top

Zero clearance top will not prevent tearout on bottom at all. You get no support after a few cuts because that slot or hole opens quickly because of the flex in the blade. You are better off using reverse tooth blades. They do help but need to watch if you make an auxiliary table top that if too thick it cancels out those reverse teeth and they do not work.

    Zero Clearence Top

I use old masonite salvaged from an old wood file cabinet. It has stood the test of time, but it is about it's end of time. I do wax it once in a while. This is on my Hegner. When I replace it, I will definitely make one for the Hawk. One thing I did on my Hegner and will do on the Hawk is make it so I can have a replaceable insert where the blade goes through. It has worked well for me.

  19. I believe it is all in what you learned on. I always learned on bottom feeder saws so I find it very easy to thread blade and install in top clamp in seconds. Being able to se where to place blade in clamp is a huge advantage to me. No older Hawk saws can not be bottom fed. Neither the Hegners. I had a Dewalt for awhile and tried top feeding and that was a disaster. Fiddling under the table to find the clamp and making sure it is all the way in was a pain. I like to see what I am doing. That is why I broke very few blades.

  20. I used clear acrylic and adhered it with double sided tape. Did that many years ago and it stood the test of time. It allows for easy movement of the project and can be waxed if need be. As far as zero clearance. I cut the opening small but it is not exact. No need for that. The blade will enlarge the hole over time because of the flex in it. I made it a little larger than the top to accommodate larger projects so they will not fall off the ends when spinning to cut. I found out right away I need that when I started cutting out my larger mirrors. I did this to both saws. I did not like the metal tables because the wood does not slide well because they way they are finished. I found the acrylic is not too slippery and still allows for good control of the piece but the more experienced you get the faster you turn the pieces and that is what I liked about the material. Got plexiglass from Home Depot in window dept.

    Zero Clearence Top

I've done this with plastic cards. I only use it when cutting small parts, so catching them on the edge of the card isn't an issue for me. I had one of the magnetic tops, but I did not like it. I much prefer the waxed steel top.

    Zero Clearence Top

I think hardboard is what I've seen people make them from. If you had a metal table that magnetic sheet like is used on the Seyco saw would be easy to cut and make, but I'm not sure it'd stay in place on a aluminum table top. https://www.menards.com/main/building-materials/panel-products/handi-panels/2-x-4-hardboard-handi-panel/1291119/p-1642874322992553-c-13337.htm?exp=false I've also seen people just tape a playing card over the top of the hole around the blade and use the original saw table.. Seems like you'd have to be careful not to have the project catch onto the edge of it but I've never tried it so I don't know.

  34. Glad to hear the Bauer is doing well. It would be great for there to be a really decent, relatively affordable scroll saw to recommend to folks new to the hobby and not sure about dropping $600+ on something like the Dewalt.

  44. This is NOT a scroll saw project, so please remove it if necessary Travis. I'm posting it because I came home yesterday morning after having coffee with "THE BOYS", and I walked in the house and saw this displayed in our living room. Ann Marie, my wife, took down all the Halloween deorations and she said the house looked too dull, so she had some very small hay bales that she uses in our NATIVITY scene and some small pumpkinsand she placed them in the stake truck to add a little FALL/Thanksgiving to our home. The truck is a pattern from WOODSMITH magazine. I made this about 5 years ago and it never looked so good. Rick

    Cozy Scroll Saw Challenge

This is 40 or more years old. It has been hanging on the wall everywhere we have lived since. It was made from pallet wood and one of the first things I cut on a scroll saw. I'm living this today with my grandchildren.
