  1. I used a piece of faux sea glass as a nod to Willie’s Christmas song, “Pretty Paper. “ Of course the guitar is Willie’s timeworn Martin, “Trigger.”

  2. I found this pic in Scrappile's gallery, liked it and wanted to do it. I couldn't find a pattern, so I used his photo. 27cm x 36.5cm, backer board 6mm, Viking 4mm, 'cheap' DIY store ply, #3 straight blade used This was my first try doing a traditional pattern, it took me about 30 hours to do with a fretsaw. Came out pretty nice (though the photo isn't).

  4. A couple years ago I started making these puzzle patterns into a clock instead.. many others make puzzles and dog leash holders from these patterns.. I like to be different.. sold quite a few of these but not too many take up the personalized with name option as I put a hefty price on those.. since I can't stock them ready to go and it seems everyone waits until the day before they need it I found that I don't have to personalize it often with a $100 price on it rather than the $80.. Looking at buying a much larger laser.. IF I do then these would fit easily into the bigger laser and then I probably can drop the price to maybe $5 more.. Of coarse lasering the name on it would in some minds make it no longer handmade.. even though it's cut on the scroll saw.. Having to scroll the name involves changing up the pattern thus time in the designing as the portion where the name is I make 1" tall instead of 1/2 for the no name so it's not a lot of work but I do have to change up the design before adding text.

  5. I think Navy is also my most sold one.. Air Force is very close as well and maybe the top one. Done a fair amount of the Coast Guard too.. been asked many times for Marines but I've never made or sold one. They are not on the site because they're all sold out.. This time of year I take anything sold out offline then after the busy holidays I put them back up as made to order.. then over the course of the year I make inventory and put them back as in stock ready to ship. I'm sold out on about 150 items currently.

  7. Anybody who has been scrolling for a long time remember Sylvia. She made me a few special patterns over the years. I asked her to make a bunch of designs for tops I started making when I got my lathe. Here is one of her designs and they were a hit with top seekers. I gave many of those away for years to kids when they came to my booth. Again combining 2 talents. Navy was the most asked for from me. Do you have a photo of her military ones? Do not see it on your web site. Can't sell them if you do not show them.

    Sea Glass Ornament

I've started making some faux sea glass with my rock tumbler, so I also made some fake drift wood with my scroll saw and sanders to make this cool Christmas Ornament. Very fun new offshoot of the hobby.

  10. Thanks. I do not remember her doing those. They are more basic in design and not to intricate. With my Marine I always had to be careful of the flag breaking when packing. Military will never go out of style. Any form of it. I started making these plaques just before I stopped doing shows and did quite well. The black outsold the blue. Now I am making military pens. Just started those. Those I gave away because again not selling anything these days. I am now in it for just the fun side. Been there done that.

  12. Steve Good also has a few marine patterns, one is the emblem, another is Marine veteran plus a third one with the emblem in a circle which would make a nice clock plus a few more.. I remember Sylvia, she was in the same group I was in. I'm sure I have several of her patterns. Would have to go thru all of my CD's to find them.

    Nativity 2024

Every year I try to do a nativity scene. This year, I picked more of a picture than a scene that has to be set up. This is a Sue Mey design. My picture taking skills are declining along with my scrolling skills. But I finished it.

  15. Anyone know of a pattern for a small desk style clock? Or a pattern that could easily be made into a clock. Guy at my local Post Office asked me what I make since I'm in there everyday dropping off packages.. so we got to talking and he asked if I had anything Marine Corps. I thought I did but nope, I have Army, Air Force, Navy, Coast Guard etc.. but nothing for Marines. I've done a little google searching but not finding much. Heading over to Steve Good's catalog to search right now.. But thought I'd ask here.. I'm sure there is something out there..

  25. Rick had them in his collection. The one I got yelled at for not making by a customer was the Coast Guard. Now I would have to add the Space X or whatever it is called. I added the clock to his pattern. He did not have that.

  26. I seen an image of the dog with stars on it.. Thought it looked like a pattern Scott would have but I couldn't find it.. Maybe I need to message Scott. I even looked on wooden teddy bear and there were some patterns there for the other military but I didn't see the Marines one. Do you know if Scott has that puzzle pattern?

  27. What about the USMC puzzle pattern like you did with the dog pattern?

    Sea Glass Ornament

I had lake front property in the Upper and would find, driftwood, sea glass and lots of tiny shells. Lake Michigan was a 20 minute drive and found a ton of awesome driftwood. Even have a box of Petoskey stones my nephew found.

  30. At my Stapes, the copier and the scanner are the same. I don't like that because when you combine things like this, you have to compromise so you don't get a great copier or scanner.

    Santa Gnome

Thanks @MarieC. I used Bloodwood, Black Walnut and Myrtle. The Myrtle I am not sure about but the friend who gave it to me called it that and said it came from the Pacific NW. His son is a woodworker who lives in Oregon and that is where it came from. I was not overly happy with the natural colors and enhanced them all. I used a red dye on the Bloodwood to make it a little redder. And I ebonized the Walnut to make it a little blacker. I bleached the Myrtle for the beard and trim pieces to make it whiter. And I used a very light coat of brown dye on Myrtle for the nose. So the purists can complain that it is not real intarsia, but I am happy with the end effect.

    Sea Glass Ornament

We went to the beach, Cape San Blas, Florida, for the week of Thanksgiving. This was our fourth trip there as a family and it's like a little time in Heaven. My grandkids learned that I loved Kitten Paw shells. Between what I picked up and what they all gave me I wound up with over 100. I've never found a piece of real sea glass.

  33. My scanner is 8.5 x 11 like a standard sheet of paper.. if the pattern I want is in the middle of this large insert you have to either fold it to get to the pattern you want or cut it out.. cutting it out you ruin the patterns that they have printed on the back side.. in some cases I'd get marks scanned in the middle of my pattern because of the lines from the pattern on the back too.. Probably was just a cheap scanner being almost 20 years ago.. Haven't tried my new scanner/printer for this purpose maybe I should. The one back in the day that I had if ANY light at all seeped past the scanner lid it'd make a large black streak where the light was at making the pattern unrecognizable in that area.. I'd have the big sheet all folded up and have to hold down on the scanner lid the best i could to keep the light out, LOL.. the frustration was enough I just search out the designer and buy it if I want it that bad..

  34. You can scan patterns with your phone. The creases are still an issue. I have played around with this and found two problems besides the creases. Lighting without glare is an issue that can be fixed easily. The other problem I encountered was that the camera needed to parallel the pattern, or you would get some distortion. This can be fixed with an overhead phone mount. They make lots of these, and some come with software. Most phone cameras have wide-angle lenses, which would also distort the image slightly.

  35. Our engineering department at work has a scanner that can scan very large prints. No problem to scan prints bigger than those inserts. Maybe hit up a print shop, or better still an engineering outfit that is local to you. They will likely be able to scan things quite easily for you. They will also quite likely have a plotter to print out things as well as big as you like.

  36. So very sad to learn of Judy's passing. She introduced me to intarsia through the article in Wood magazine. Had the great pleasure of speaking to her by phone once and always dreamed of meeting this amazingly talented artist. Like so many I will be forever grateful for the wonderful art form she has taught us. Deepest sympathy to her family. M. Romo Dupont Washington

  37. I guess I’m old fashioned. I loosen the staples, remove the insert refasten the staples and keep the insert with the magazine. put the area I want to make a copy of on my printer and press copy. I don’t do that digital stuff.

  40. Yesterday I did a compound cut out of one of the ornaments for charity books. this one is by Travis. I realized that by adjusting the side cut, you can make 3 ornaments out of one slab, so in essence a stack cut in a way. Cyut the PEACE side first, then cut the 3 side cuts.

  41. This is a Carole Rothman design that was published in Scrollsaw Woodworking & Crafts, issue 61, Holiday 2015. The box is made from Brazilian rosewood and the flower petals are cut from alder. Won’t the missus be surprised!
