  1. My Barbers (a Father/Son operation) are big time gun enthusiasts who, after seeing some of my work, ask me if I could make something to hang in their shop…the walls of which, are filled with all kinds of signs, pictures, and the like. All things about Hunting, Guns, and Motorcycles plus Police Patches, lots of Pin-ups and much more. To get a feel of what kind of things are on their wall, one of the signs reads “Notice! Ammunition is getting too expensive, so there will be no warning shots. I found an image online that met with what I was asked to make. I created this 9 x 12 inch ‘Gun-In-Hand’ pattern for an Intarsia like painted Segmental piece. The pattern was cut from one piece of 10-inch wide, nominal 3/4" thick, premium pine. I painted the individual pieces with Acrylic Air Brush Paints. After Painting, the pieces were glued onto a 1/8-inch-thick BB Ply backer. The completed assembly was protected with multiple coats of Clear Gloss Acrylic Finish spray. Comments and critiques always welcome

  2. These is my Christmas project for family. 14 of them! I’m pretty much done with all the staining, but wanted the group’s opinion on painting two items. I was thinking about painting the bow red and the smaller fireplace flame yellow or just leave them as is. I highly regard your opinions on this! Thanks, Ray

    Guitar Ornament

This may be the most difficult project I have ever cut on a scroll saw. I made several attempts before I got one to come out in one piece.

  5. Mike's has changed hands, but is still a great representative of FD blades. Mike sold the business to folks who have a strong reputation, like he built.

    First Scroll Saw

I'll second this. I knew a master scroller who made some of these wooden gear clocks. He was also a mechanical engineer, so he had a fundamental understanding of the challenges involved. He said his biggest problem, apart from the precision required, was that the slightest change in humidity would mess up the movement and his clocks never kept good time. This can be mitigated somewhat by using plywood, but the tolerances are so tight that even using BB ply, there can be enough movement with humidity to mess things up. These are great examples of a scroller's skills and an excellent conversation piece, but if you intend for it to actually be functional & accurate clock, well, good luck.

  7. I'm kinda with JT on this. Gotta be careful when painting something like this, because it may not blend as nicely as you want. I'd be inclined to use dye instead of paint. The dye will still allow the look of the wood to show through, so the contrast won't be quite as stark. I'd probably only do the ribbon on the wreath and leave the fireplace flame as is. Afterall, there are flames on the candles as well. If you do one, should you do all? You see the slippery slope you can end up on.

    Aquairiam pump

I used whatever seemed appropriate from Walmart. The one I had was adjustable and dual output, so I combined the two outputs to one. Seemed to work well enough.

    Aquairiam pump

I used an aquarium pump for years, but they no longer make one like the one I used. If you want to try an aquarium pump, I recommend the Tetra Whisper. It's cheap ($6.40 today) and lasts a long time. I have several. If the Loc-Line is broken, replace it with the real thing. Loc-Line 40413 It will last longer and work better.

    Aquairiam pump

I have a Delta 40-694 and I have broken the blower assy. line that comes off of the side of the saw. I know that there are others on this site who use an aquairiam pump with hose to blow off sawdust. I would appreciate if some folks would weigh in on brand and model of pump that does this job. I don't know what to look for. Thanx in advance. forrest

  11. I’m looking to buy some Flying Dutchman XL12 blades and can’t find where to buy them in bulk. Most are sold in a pack and I dk t need the other ones included. Do any of you fine folks have a good supplier of bulk blades? I can’t find the same size and tpi on Olson’s website. Thanks, Ben

    Painting question

Color highlights can add to the visual appeal even for a hard-core wood guy like me.

    Aquairiam pump

Did just the plastic flex hose break or did the metal part right at the saw break? If just the plastic line those come apart and you can take out the bad links and reconnect it.. Yes it will be shorter but this saw is much like the Dewalt I had and they come with pretty long flex line when new.. I had this happen a few times on my DeWalt.. They make a special plier tool to help take apart and put back together.. I never needed them as they pull apart not too bad.. putting them back on can be a struggle though.. It helps a lot if you can heat them up in some really hot water for a few minutes to make the plastic a bit more flexible add a drop of soap to help it slide together..

    Aquairiam pump

Man I tried that years ago when I had my old Dremel and can tell you in my case waste of time and effort. How much effort to fix assembly? That would be my suggestion. Maybe jury rig something to fix it. Others may have had better luck with the pumps.

  21. They look beautiful as it. If you choose to paint the wreath, just paint the outline and use a subdue red so it blends in but also stand out softly.

    Painting question

I think adding some color will enhance the very well scrolled piece.. Seems many people outside of woodworkers don't care as much for the plain ol wood grain and textures like many of the people that work with wood do.. I used to have a hard time adding color, but now that I have done some paint work onto my scroll sawn stuff I actually think it enhances the piece.. so that said I'd go for it..

An old thread for sure, but the consensus, it seems, is that the program was difficult to learn and that Inkscape and GIMP (both free) are a better option.

  26. Fascinating thread. Amazing how far off topic it goes. Local BDI for ice cream (Bridge Drive Inn). Brandied Peach Upside down, please. An upside down is a very thick milkshake handed to you upside down.
